'Rock Star'
Week 7: Patrice survives, Zayra robbed!
AMERICAN-STATESMAN
Thursday, August 17, 2006
And then there were seven, and former Sister 7 leader Patrice Pike is, surprisingly, one of them. The Austinite survived the week 7 purge on CBS' "Rock Star: Supernova," even though her chances seemed shipwrecked Tuesday with a karaoke version of "Message In a Bottle" by the Police.
During Wednesday's elimination show, bottom three perennial Pike had a hard time following Zayra Alvarez's scintillating, over-the-top take on Blue October's "Razor Blade," but she saved her Supernova skin by performing Hole's "Celebrity Skin" as a young, punkish Lisa Minnelli.
Dallasite Alvarez, who could end up as the biggest star of the contenders (singing lessons?). ended up getting the boot
Your turn: 'Rock Star' Patrice
Have you been following Patrice's 'Rock Star' performances? Do you think she has what it takes to win the competition? Post your comment.

I thought it was a great idea for you to go on the show. To get recognition for being a fantastic performer AND to show the world your grace and class can only be good for you. What Supernova wants for their band is beneath you. Your career will BOTTLE ROCKET, baby and it’s all about YOU! AUSTIN LOVES YOU AND IS SO PROUD!

This show is a complete waste of time.
Obviously, this is another cookie-cutter talent show program that the networks can’t seem to produce enough of.
What little respect these washed up irrelevant rockers might have had before is long gone.
That said, I admire Patrice’s standing up to Navarro when he critiqued her for doing the same things on stage.

I think it’s best to say that Supernova isn’t right for Patrice. Supernova can’t hold a candle to Patrice. I mean really, does anyone plan to see Supernova on tour? I might see them if they played a free outdoor concert where I could bring my own beer.

First off, those who seek to appear on such a retarded reality show is a sell out to their art. Second, those who are entertained by watching such a show are clearly mindless.
Stinky Pete has spoken.

I’m gonna miss watching Patrice. I liked her style. At least she gets away from Dilana, Lukas and Dave. I hope to see you play up here in Dallas. Love your sound.

Great Job Patrice! I was very impressed with you performances and I think you should have lasted longer. We all knew you werent a good fit for Supernova, but a supernova you are- in YOUR OWN LIGHT.

You were wonderful and made all of Texas very very proud of you. You are a tremendous peformer with so much class and dignity. I would imagine that the “rest” from Dilana will be welcome. Anyway, welcome home and congratulations on all of your performances.

Patrice,
Thanks for seven weeks of pure bliss! The only draw back was I couldn’t see you live and I was going through withdrawls!! I must admit I will be getting more sleep on Tuesday nights now, yawn. No more late night voting! Hope you had a blast, made some good friends and more importantly got some well deserved contacts and exposure! I’m so looking forward to Unraveling….

Suprised, No not at all. It is the general public that voted for the bottom three, and I think the majority of them could not see her fronting heavy metal rockers. Those guys saw her talent and wonderful voice but they could not igonre their fans. I must say I was shocked when I first saw her name as a contestant. But it was great to see the Austin songwriter get some exposure and let the world know what what a wonderful talent she is.

I have seen Patrice many times, and don’t personally care for her voice (my friends are die hard fans), but her performance on RockStar just seemed lackluster. It seemed like she was irritated by the show or something, and that is totally understandable. I don’t understand, actually, why she decided to do the show in the first place. Come home, Patrice, and stick to your core who love you.

I’m disappointed that Patrice would sell out to a reality TV show. I think such a move cheapens what she’s tried to do on her own all these years. Is the indie movement dead or something?

My wife and I think Patrice did really well on the show, but there were some performances that we thought were not good choice songs for her. But she did represent Austin very well and don’t worry Patrice you will always be loved her in Austin. You ROCK!!!

PATRICE MARRY ME… Oh yeah, I forgot you are already married…I am not surprised that a lame tv show would axe an Austin Texas artist, we own the music universe. It probably had more to do with them wanting to send a msg out that Austin is not everything than Patrice’s talents. The funny thing about it is that Patrice with Sister Seven and other acts made more money every night than the judges probably made all week. You rule Patrice…and your so fine… Scary

Patrice has a great voice but her true talent is her song writing. That is something only her older fans will appreciate! The rest is all ‘Tiny Matters”

MY WIFE AND I ARE PROBABLY SOME OF PATRICE PIKE’S OLDER FANS. WE ARE 60. NEVER THE LESS, OUR ONLY HOPE WAS THAT PATRICE GO AS FAR AS SHE WANTED WITH THIS THING, AND I AGREE THAT SHE WOULD ONLY HELP THESE OLD WRINKLIES………..BUT I CARE NOT WHAT THEY THINK OR DO. COME ON HOME LITTLE WOMAN, WE NEED YOU BACK HERE IN AUSTIN

seeing many little sister/s7/solo shows, i was highly intrigued with this opportunity for her. honestly, i thought her vocals were off and i thought it was a “round peg trying to fit a square hole” type of deal. i was dissapointed she didn’t express her vocals/herself more in the songs she sung. i have heard and seen many performances that exceed anything she has done on the show.GOTTA SAY, MY IRON LUNG WAS LIGHTS OUT. in all,i’m glad she was on the show and i wish her the best! CHEERS!

Someone actually watches this show? Regularly?? What a joke. She ought to be shamed into accountancy for even appearing on it. Maybe she still has time to make a run at American Idol.
Tatoos and 75 IQ’s do not rock & roll make. I think they need about an hour’s worth of comments from the ‘artist’ panel to come up with two coherent sentences.

Power-house vocals? Maybe in her native enviroment but, I have not seen anything to provoke such a statement on rockstar from her yet. Patrice does not belong on the show. She may have an ok voice however, she totally does not match the needs of supernova. Seems to me she would have more success at lilith fair. Dilana on the other hand has a smokey tone that IMHO sounded great during the supernova tune.

Storm, survives due to nude pics on web, she is mildly entertaining at most.

Hasn’t anyone else noted how FLAT Patrice sings? Her voice barely keeps a note with no emotional range at all. Zayra is tone-deaf and she was the only one who couldn’t find a note when auditioning for the Supernova song. Lukas with his mouth CLOSED blows everyone off the stage except Dilana who seems to be custom-fitted to front the band.

Gimme me a break, she needs to stick to the bar scene. She is not a rocker and it shows every week. Message in a bottle was awful…. Somebody please teach her to move on stage and not just walk around! She lacks the ability to entertain. Are they airing a different show in austin? I don’t get it?

Patrice is an amazing live performer and imo far too talented to front SuperNova (I mean did you hear the song last night they did!?!? That’s what they mean by ‘rocking out’??) Zayra should of been out weeks ago.

Ahhhh, Corcoran is a Zahra fan. ‘Zahra robbed’, indeed. Zahra spasmatic performance of Razor Blade wanted me to give her something to bite on. Her voice that of a braying yak/goat hybrid. Regarding Patrice it important to note that her ‘My Iron Lung’ has been voted as best this season(perhaps both seasons) by Internet downloads. Her version of Celebrity Skin was also spot on. Hopefully she’ll bring an original song next week or at least the same kind of roof raising intensity of My Iron Lung.

I agree with hellosally’s comments…Patrice is just plain boring to me…I don’t feel the rocker chick vibe like I do when I listen to Dilana or Storm sing…I would gladly pay good money to watch either of them…The put on a stunning show…Even when its off its still alright with me…But big ups to Dilana she an H-Town chick!

Patrice has every right to be where she is right at this moment. You can’t mistake the quality of her sound. Girl can sing some rock n roll! As far as Zayra being robbed? Quite the contrary, I am surprised she lasted as long as she did. It was evident early on that she was definitely not right for this band, compelling performances aside, she should have been gone at the third elimination.

Am I watching a different show than everyone else here?? Though Patrice may have an ok voice, I do NOT see what all these commenters see in her. Perhaps she’s just a sentimental favorite. I don’t get it. Unlike Zayra (who’s obviously a star), I find Patrice boring. Her performances seem unnatural and uncomfortable. And she’s a horrible fit for Tommy Lee and the boys. Personally, I’m shocked that she’s still in the running.

Patrice is one of my favorite Austin musicians, but I don’t see her fronting Supernova. This is no slight to her,as I prefer her style and sound. Supernova should take a male and female vocalist, which would give them a varied sound, like Fleetwood Mac etc. Having said this, I can’t help but pull for her. You go girl..

I used to drive up from Houston with when I was in high school to see Little Sister. My guy friends were so in lust with her it was funny… I hope she does well, I’d love for her to win, but I’m not confident that she is the “rocker” type. I just think of her as more more laid back, and a bit hippie, crunchy…

My first Patrice experience was Little Sister’s first trip to Cincinnati in ‘90 or ‘91. They played a tiny bar and packed it. When she walked on stage, she said “Hi y’all… we’re Little Sister from Austin, Texas and we’re going to kick your a*s!” And they did. I never missed them in Cincy after that and have planned my only two trips to Austin to see her perform primarily, and see anyone else in town, secondarily. Best of luck… you’re better than those clowns…

I have to admit, I was disturbed when I saw that Patrice was going to be on this show. I used to go with all my neo-hippie chick friends to see Little Sister play every Tuesday and Friday nights at the old Black Cat Lounge on Sixth St. and followed them to Steamboat and have followed her some ever since. She’s immensely talented and really is the very essence of friendly, laid-back Austin cool and I just thought reality TV was beneath her. But I’ve now watched twice and I think it’s great that she’s on there. I don’t expect her to win but it seems a fun ride and she’s doing it with her integrity intact.

Bottom 3?? You got to be kidding me. Living in Austin, Texas most of my life, I had heard of sister seven but had never heard of Patrice Pike or heard her music until watching the show “Rock Star” She has poured out great songs on every show and has a voice that I love. I’m voting on Patrice. I would love to see her at a live show. Good luck girl..

I’ve been following Patrice for 10 years (street team as well) and have always said Patrice will be a household name. Regardless if she fronts this band or not, she will always be our favorite rocker. We’re proud of her accomplishments! She can give em a bit at a time & keep em wanting more! Just be yourself Patrice! We love you jofarc!

Watching the entire season last summer of Rock Star: INX was instructional, at least. When I heard Patrice was going to do the show I was excited for the exposure it would give her, but a little confused about the match.
She’s done herself proud so far, and she’s professional enough to do whatever it takes to stay in it as long as she wants. My guess from week one, last week nothwithstanding, is top 5 at least.
With or without Supernova, she’ll go on to rock us all for years to come!

Patrice will outlive Supernova as she has outlived every obstacle that has dared her passage so far. Dave and the geezers will of course be looking for another gimmick (did I say job?) to parade their wrinkled faces over and rock will continue to roll regardless. Patrice, honestly, your better than this but if your having fun, all the power to you. Knock em dead.

Patrice rocks! I love her and have been a fan since Sister7 used to play the Double Diamond in Aspen, CO. Still, I’ll have to agree with the writer Supernova is not right for her. Week 8 is giving her one too many weeks I think. Don’t worry though we will see more of Patrice.

With only three members, and without the power of a ZZ-Top, there will be some big holes in in Super Nova’s sound. A lot of people don’t take Patrice’s guitar playing that seriously, but as a rythem guitarist with both electric and acoustic, she could plug those holes and make them much more powerful for the large shows they are contemplating…

I DONT THINK THIS BAND COULD DO HER JUSTICE. SURE THEY ARE BIG NAMES IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY BUT, WHAT HAVE THEY DONE FOR ME LATELY(MUSICALLY SPEAKING)? I CANT SAY THAT I’VE EVER BEEN TO A SHOW WITH PATRICE AND HAD A BAD EXPERIENCE. SHE HAS ALWAYS BEEN PROFESSIONAL AND INTERTAINING!! IF SHE DOESN’T WIN THIS CONTEST, SHE WILL WIN ON HER ON. I’M SO PROUD TO CALL HER FRIEND AND FELLOW MUSICIAN.

Patrice has more than what it takes to front this band. I have been following the show and the one thing that stands out most is her consistent voice. Like Gilby said “it’s your voice that keeps you here” When they drill others saying that they don’t think their ‘voice’ can hold up for an hour and a half show…Patrice has the experience of doing multiple shows with multiple encores. Due to her fan base I honestly think she would be the only logical choice for Supernova’s tour to be a hit!!

I think Patrice has the best chance to win, because although Lukas and Dilana fit the best as far as the right “look”….Lukas cant sing that great and even if you think he does, theres no way his voice could last singing like that 200 shows a year!!!…and Dilana, well I just think it would get boring after awhile b/c she doesnt have much of a range and I dont think her voice would last either if she tried to have more of a range. Go Patrice!! You got this girl!

Let me just say that I’ve always been impressed with Patrice Pike’s power-house vocals. They are flawless, crisp, clear and energetic! As far as the personal attack against her, totally unprofessional and uncalled for. All it took was one “negative comment” by an established rocker (for what point he was trying to make is beyond me?) But all for the ratings no doubt and of course, it swayed the viewers that landed her in the bottom 3 ! What a joke ! Rock on Patrice!! Hang in there !
