Rolling Stones to play Austin on Oct. 22

Zilker Park date will be first Austin show for 44-year-old band.

AMERICAN-STATESMAN MUSIC WRITER
Wednesday, August 16, 2006

It's official: The Rolling Stones are coming to Austin.

Capital Sports and Entertainment and Charles Attal Presents confirmed Tuesday that the rock 'n' roll band, regarded by many as the world's greatest, is planning to play Zilker Park on Oct. 22. The two companies are co-producing the show with the Stones organization.

"This is more of a save-the-date announcement," CSE promoter Charlie Jones said. "Most of the details that fans want to know are being worked out."

Information on ticket prices and sale dates, stage layout, shuttle buses and seating arrangements is forthcoming, Jones said.

However, Jones did confirm that the concert will have a capacity of 50,000. In 2005, about 65,000 people per day attended the Austin City Limits Music Festival, also promoted by CSE and Attal.

This year's ACL festival is scheduled for Sept. 15-17 and will host more than 130 bands on eight stages. Although three-day passes to the popular shindig are sold out, single tickets are still available.

The Stones announced the new North American tour dates on the band's Web site Tuesday.

This will be the first Austin show by the 44-year-old band, which canceled an October 1994 appearance at Austin's Royal-Memorial Stadium, opting instead to play the Alamodome in San Antonio. The Stones played Dallas and Houston in late 2005.

The only other Texas date on this leg of the "Bigger Bang" tour is Oct. 20 at the Sun Bowl in El Paso. The tour also includes stops in such unlikely markets as Missoula, Mont., and Boise, Idaho.

Although the Stones' singles have not scored many radio spins in recent years, the band's 2005 album "A Bigger Bang" has gone platinum. And the band is still a box-office powerhouse, even though the combined ages of the band's four principals — singer Mick Jagger, guitarists Keith Richards and Ron Wood and drummer Charlie Watts — is 249.

Jagger, Richards and Watts are the band's sole remaining founding members. Wood joined in 1975.

Although forced to postpone 15 shows from May to July after Richards, 62, injured his head falling out of a tree, the 2006 leg of the band's "Bigger Bang" tour nonetheless has been the year's second-highest grosser, taking in a whopping $52.5 million in the first six months. The Stones lagged behind only Madonna, who grossed $54.3 million.

With Zilker Park so quickly being called back into service after the Austin City Limits Festival, Jones tried to lay to rest concerns about overusing the public space.

"I want to protect that park as much as anybody else," Jones said. "We put this together the same way we put ACL together, starting with the neighborhood associations and working our way up the ladder to the city manager's office."

Jay Stone, the division manager of finance and special events for Austin Parks and Recreation, said CSE has used the park in good faith.

"The ACL festival costs the taxpayers absolutely nothing. Zero," Stone said. City employees "put in a lot of hours, but CSE reimburses the city 100 percent. That's for park police, operations, road closures, cleanup, maintenance, everything. I assume the Stones show would not cost the citizen one penny, either."

The same weekend the Stones play at Zilker, Auditorium Shores will host the Power of the Cross Festival, a full day of free live Christian music and outreach on Oct. 21.

"I don't think the two events will interfere with each other," Jones said.

Your turn: Rolling Stones in Austin

When Rolling Stones come to Zilker Park in October it will be their first time to play Austin. Will you go see them? What's the most you'd pay for a ticket? After all these years, do the Stones still rock? Post your comment.

Ditto…Max. Austin has become a city of “Self.” It needs community. May the “Veil” be removed.

Let’s be real here, all the complaints on the price, venue etc… First it’s the Stones live, tough to even put a price on.Consider price of gas, driving to another city, staying in a hotel for a night; it makes these tickets look cheap! To me the tickets sound like about $50 a piece if you get two and would have had to travel 150 miles otherwise. Yea, you bet it’s worth it! Ps…Austin as a Houston wannabe, come on! Don’t see Califonians moving to Houston by the truck loads!

Even better…the Stones play in Regina, Saskatchewan (pop. 250,000+-) TWO shows on Oct 6 & 8….all real seats starting at $60cdn ($53 USD)….and for the richies, you can pay $500 and be >> ON << the stage for the concert. Damn Canadians!!

Top scalper ASK price so far is $1035 a ticket (Row 1 bleachers). $95 doesn’t look so bad!! I’ve seen the boys a few times since ‘69…most recently in fall of 97, outside stadium in Canada with temp at about 40’…froze through the opening act, after two songs from the boys, the place felt like 90’…IT WAS HOT. EASILY WORTH $95 + ripoff fees, as long as you are physically able to hack it. CUthere

There was a time a decade or two ago when living in Austin seemed like a great idea. The Stones show at the park is just more evidence that Austin has become a sellout city. The 70’s & 80’s charm is disappearing faster than cheese in front of a mouse. Now Austin is little more than a Houston clone wannabe.

Being 25 years old, and too poor to ever see the Stones in the past, I felt like I owed them something for all the great times they’ve given me jamming in the car. So I decided to make up for lost time and bought 48 tickets.

Had to buy them.

Oldest son (33) saw them in Tokyo, he was the provider of their cell phones during their Japan visit so he got to meet with Mick in their hotel, and younger son (30) taped an interview with Mick during the Stones’ visit to Nashville, almost unheard of to get an interview one-on-one with Mick.

Our turn…we’ll be there!!!

I’ll be there. Fact - it cost $95 plus over $20 fees at ticket master. Deal with it - that’s just the way it is. It’s 2006. That’s the cost to see the Rolling Stones in Austin. Belly achin’ about it is just gonna make you bitter and cranky. Life is too short. I’m gonna go see the Stones. peace

So, the Stones are charging an excessive price for the tickets, the oil companies are charging excessive prices for gas, water costs $1 per gallon! Yes, we’re being screwed by all. I can replace my broken headlight on my Mitsubishi or I can have two tickets to the stones! I hope the beer doesn’t cost too much?!

By Loren

Let’s see, it costs $95 to fill up may gas tank. It costs $95 for jeans and a t-shirt. It costs $95 for a dinner date and a movie. $95 per month interest on my credit cards. $95 for my last parking ticket. $95 for a haircut, $95 to get an air conditioning service to look at my A.C. $95 is nothing these days. That’s like $25 in 1985.

So, hell yeah, I’ll spend $25 for live Stones music!

Look, It is the Stones — But it is a bad Venue to have to pay $108 including service charge. They can’t play the Erwin Center ‘cause it is too small but $95 and you gotta fight an entire city to get a spot…hmmm…and people will be in line 4 days in advance. Oh, I will be there - thanks Lance Armstrong.

Austin and Zilker Park are being runneth over with big money promoters and out of state wannabes….go home! Refuse to pay money for anyone in Zilker park - it’s a park! It is suppose to be a FREE public park. I am sick of seeing Central Texas and specifically Austin being sold out. Now its heading down south….SoCo, SoLa - well, so long!

Site will not allow a negative comment? What a fair poll. this is a test to see if the site will work or not.

Charge the fat cat promoters enough to restore Zilker Park’s health after the herd of human cattle tramps the ground and grass during this drought. Keep Zilker Park free for the public, not a money making venue for rich promoters and politicians.

Way too much money to sit in a crowd and breath dust and sweat like a pig!!

$5 million + for the Stones and Zilker Park once again gets trampled and abused. The City of Austin needs to charge enough for the use of Zilker Park in order to restore its’ health, not just enough to pick up big pieces of garbage left behine. MHO PW

I’m not gonna spend Friday night, all day Saturday & Sat. night in line to get a decent patch of grass. They shoulda booked Erwin for 3 nights…better deal. Unless I win tix, I’ll have to pass…DAMMIT!

I would love to see the Stones. Saw them back in 1972 and became a big fan. However, when talking $100/ticket and 50,000 tickets that is FIVE MILLION DOLARS. Gross profit for the concert will actually exceed the FIVE MILLION DOLARS when you add in the bleacher seats which range from $350 to $600 per person. I love the Stones, but the ticket cost is more than my market can bear.

I’ve seen the Stones twice before…I wouldn’t pay $95 to see them especially general admission. It’s just price gouging. How much can it cost to hold a concert in a city park? I’ll bet that many of there fans feel the same way as well. Too bad.

Austin is supposed to be the Music Capitol and we don’t even have a decent concert venue. If the City of Austin is involved, that means a lot of Comped tickets to friends and family and a huge “park preservation” charge like the one from ACL fest. Good luck getting a decent view.

I’ve never seen the Stones Live, but to me $95 seems a little stip, on a field which gives you no garantee of even getting a glimsp of seen hyde or hair of these guys maybe on a large screen some where in the horizon! I wish they would have put more thought into bringing them to Austin, maybe 3-days at the Erwin Center fri, sat, sun, that whey those whom couldn’t have seen them on one of those days, would have been able to on another day.

Nope. I may be an antique at 45, but when I started going to concerts in high school, you could see top acts for about the cost of an album. The Stones are great, but I’d rather buy the 6 CDs I could get for that $95. Not to criticize anyone who can afford to drop $200 or more on a pair of tickets, but I wonder about who’s getting priced out of these shows. I think I hear Lester Bangs rolling over in his grave…

No band of the last few decades has anywhere near the raw talent, orginality, song writing ability and sheer magnetism of the Stones. I think $95 x 10 is a better bargain than $20 spent on any of the “wannabes” masquerading as rock and roll bands playing around 6th St. The Stones aren’t a rock and roll band, they ARE rock and roll. Don’t miss them at any price. They are true living legends. They will not be around forever but they will live forever.

After 4 of 5 shows in various indoor arenas, it will be great to see them outdoors again. Ah, the memories of 1972 when Stevie Wonder opened at his peak for the Stones at their peak. Yeah, the Stones peaked a long time ago, but 4 shows from 1989 to 2005 did not disappoint! Sign me up!

I would pay $20.00 for an outside concert since I can’t afford any more than that - But I would really, really love to finally see the Stones if I could.

I’ll be the one with the tent pitched in front of the box office…

This will be my 6th stones show, all in Texas..and each has topped the previous one.

Anyone who is on the fence, get off your a**e, this my be your last time to see the greatest rock ‘n roll band on the face of the earth (and that is not hyperbole).

Recommended live stones record for tailgate purposes = GET YER YA YA’S OUT!!!!

I was 8 at my first rolling stones concert in dallas in 89 and I would love to take my 2 year old son. I have been a stones fan my whole life. I have paid up to $300 to see them and that was at no security tour in oklahoma about 5 years ago. I have been to about 6 concerts of them and I am so happy they are finally coming closer to me since I live in the austin area. It would kinda be a family tradition to go since my dad all of his brothers are really big fans. Everybody knows I’m such a big fan that they ask why austin? I tell them because every night I go to my guest house and play a differnt Rolling Stones album. If you play it they will come!

If I have to explain it to you, you probably wouldn’t understand anyway. I’m glad the tix prices will be high, and especially glad that the unsure are whinning about $ at a time like this. Mo room for me and all my friends. Only the truely dedicated need show up, please. I’ve passed on many a Stones concert since my first show in Dallas, 1965, but this un’s in my own hometown and at Zilker no less. WhoooWheee. Time to celebrate who we are.

If it’s just the Stones, the most I’d pay is $50. If Hubert Sumlin and/or Pinetop Perkins play with them, I’ll pay $5,000. ;-)

I saw the STONES in the sixties at the RODEO in San Antonio, I was a little girl and singing on an outdoor stage. Everyone came to see Billy J. Kramer, not the STONES! DUH! I was standing backstage directly with the STONES, they were older and I was shy to ask for an autograph, but I still have my original ticket! MY grandmother, mother and sister all heard them. STONES said never TEXAS again!!!!!! ALWAYS been a fan, my grown son Cliff took me to the VOODOO tour at ALAMO DOME, blew us away. Makes 4 generations seeing them in concert. My Mother wants to go again, I can’t give her age, but she is older than CHARLIE WATTS. Greatest band EVER. Why ZILKER PARK? WHY not the STADIUM, saw EAGLES there and I don’t mean football… or IRWIN, DON’T “start me up”, awful place for this concert!!!!!!

I’d love to see the stones but my moms a cheepskate and wont pay more than $50, which is resonable considering the concessions will be outrageously expensive, and its ATX people!!
