Willie Nelson has confirmed that he'll play a Sept. 21 benefit at the Erwin Center for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, the concert's promoter, Clifford Antone, said Tuesday.
"It'll be Willie and God knows who else," Antone said of the lineup he's assembling. "Jimmie Vaughan says he'll do it. Cyril Neville's in town, so we'll try to get the Neville Brothers. We just firmed up the date, but things are coming together very quickly."
Several acts, including Lucinda Williams, might be plucked from the Austin City Limits Music Festival, which starts two days after the benefit. Fest booker Charles Attal says a contract clause limiting performances in the area before the fest has been lifted.
"We're already sold out, plus it's important to raise as much money as possible for the relief effort," Attal said.
Nelson has also earmarked proceeds from the Sept. 26 and 27 grand opening of Willie's Place, a 850-seat concert hall at the Carl's Corner truck stop 50 miles south of Dallas, for hurricane relief efforts.
Antone said a news conference, revealing a lineup and ticket information, will be coming within the next couple of days.
Erwin Center official Jimmy Earl said Tuesday that announcing the benefit was "premature until the last few details are taken care of." Antone met with Erwin Center officials Tuesday evening.
Another fundraiser currently tying up loose ends is the Sixth Street for Bourbon Street benefit, an all-day affair that will close Sixth Street from Red River Street to Congress Avenue on Sept. 16.
Among those featured on two main stages will be Marcia Ball, Delbert McClinton, Joe Ely and Asleep at the Wheel. The mayor's office and Austin-based GamePlan Marketing are coordinating the event, which hopes to raise $250,000 in wristband, food and beverage sales.
Two other benefits are slated for Antone's nightclub at 213 W. Fifth St. Alejandro Escovedo, Fastball, Charlie Sexton, James McMurtry, Ian McLagan, Jon Dee Graham and others are playing Tuesday, and the club will host a rap extravaganza Sept. 16 headlined by Bavu Blakes and D-Madness.
