2005 ACL Fest Band Schedule

Updated: Aug. 3, 2005

The Black Crowes, Lyle Lovett, Oasis, Widespread Panic and Coldplay will headline the 2005 Austin City Limits Music Festival, held Sept. 23 to 25 at Zilker Park.

"The Grid," the full list of the dates and times of each act, was released to ACL newsletter subscribers on July 6. Wisely, start and end times for the big acts will be staggered on Sept. 23 and 24 in an attempt to end the long lines for buses and taxis that plagued earlier ACL Fests. For example, Britpop superstars Oasis' set on Sept. 24 runs from 8:15 to 9:35 p.m., while jam band Widespread Panic's set runs from 8:30 to 10 p.m. (Coldplay closes out the festival on Sept. 25 with a 8:30 to 10:00 p.m. set.)

Recent additions to the schedule includes Austin legend Roky Erickson and the Explosives (7:45 to 8:45 p.m., Sept. 24) and rockers Blues Traveler (7:30 to 8:30 p.m., Sept. 23). A limited number of single-day tickets are available for $50 plus delivery and service charges; three-day passes are sold out.

Plans for the Bands

Must-See Acts

It's never to early to start planning your Austin City Limits Festival days. Music critic Joe Gross says these five performers should hold a spot on your list of acts to catch.

Coldplay
(Sunday, Sept. 25, 8:30 p.m., SBC Stage)
The band's new album, "X&Y," is one of the year's hottest and their set at Live8 was one of the highlights. You'll be standing with 40,000 other fans, but you might as well find out if they're the new U2.
(Review of Coldplay's "X&Y")

Roky Erickson & The Explosives
(Saturday, Sept. 24, 7:45 p.m., Austin Ventures Stage) He's tanned, rested and ready. It's been well over a decade since Roky threw down with these garage rockers, and this has the potential to be the festival's most moving set.
(More about Roky Erickson, 2005 SXSW)

The Arcade Fire
(Sunday, Sept. 25, 4:30 p.m., Cingular Stage) With eight members playing as many instruments, this indie pop juggernaut is at once uplifting, messy and melodic.

John Prine
(Friday, Sept. 23, 6:30 p.m., Cingular Stage) This legendary singer-songwriter's eye for small human detail and way with a chord or two has given him a cult that would follow him into the sun.

Room to Breathe

A Less Crowded Festival

Music fans will be able to breath easier at this year's Austin City Limits Music Festival at Zilker Park. Festival organizers confirmed in April they will reduce capacity to the popular three-day fest by 10,000, thanks to feedback from sweaty patrons. Last year's peak attendance was 75,000, so the 2005 festival will use 65,000 as the cut-off.

ACL is also hoping to alleviate some of the traffic snarls patrons encountered last year. "The evening lineup will be a little more staggered," said ACL spokeswoman Lindsey Tishgart. "Headliners will end at different times, to ease the transition of people exiting the park."
