'Speed Racer' crashes on CG overload

Dale Roe

Austin American Statesman

"Fans of the original show will consider it a travesty. Parents will check their watches and have about as much fun as they might while watching their kids play Xbox."

Visuals overwhelm but don't save lackluster script

Carl Hoover

Waco Tribune-Herald

"Many of its race sequences are so choppy and incoherent that one can't tell who's ahead or not — as maddening as choreography shot with little consideration of dancers' feet and bodies."

No, Speed Racer, no!

Eric Robinette, a.k.a. "Sir Critic"

Dayton Daily News

"There's something wild to see on almost every inch of the screen... Then the story had to intrude, and the caution flags went flying."

'Speed Racer' is strictly kids' stuff

Kevin D. Thompson

Palm Beach Post

"A dizzying array of bright Starburst colors, dazzling special effects (some surprisingly cheesy) and a ridiculous disregard for the laws of gravity and physics will leave your senses feeling overloaded and in desperate need of some quiet time in a dimly lit room."

Dazzling!!

"The critics are crazy! This was the best movies I have ever taken my 4 year old son to. He threw his arms up and cheered through the whole movie! So did the grown man sitting a row in front of us. I enjoyed every second of it and I loved the story! I will be going back to watch it with my husband, then I will be buying this movie for my personal collection. "

"Speed Racer was my favorite cartoon as a child and the movie didn't let me down at all. My son loved it, and I reminisced about the old times especially when the originally music played at the end. I too, almost did not go to the movie because of the critics' reviews. I'm glad I didn't listen to them. It's not an Oscar winner, but worth taking your kid to the theater."

Fun Movie!

"I can't believe i almost skipped this movie because of what the critics said. It is fabulous for kids but most adults are big kids so must say...it is a lot of fun. It was fast entertainment and oh so colorful. Watching on the big screen a plus. (Nice to see a movie that doesn't include torture scenes or human mutiliations.) We were all smiles and laughter upon leaving the theater."

"Movie critics need to get over themselves, it's freakin' Speed Racer for goodness sake!! It's not a movie that is looking to win an Oscar!! I just saw the movie (I have to admit that I was not looking forward to it), but...IT BLEW ME AWAY!! The visual effects rock!! The story line was great and it was just plain fun to see Speed Racer come to life! Matthew Fox was an awesome Racer X and Christina Ricci couldn't have been a better Trixie!! All in all it was a great film and I would recommend it to anyone!! It was like Tokyo Drift meets Tron!! It was AWESOME!! Can't say it enough!! Go see it!!!"

Great for kids!

"The critics who panned this film need to get over themselves. I believe that the negative reviews really hurt this film's first-week box office receipts. This is a fantastic kid's film. There was great action, cutting-edge special effects and most important, the actors did a great job of playing their roles without taking themselves too seriously. It's far better than any of the Spy Kids films, and dare I say that my son enjoyed it more than Iron Man (overrated). Take the family... the kids will love it. "
