UPDATE: Maddie, the terminally ill dog, has found a forever home! According to Texas Humane Heroes, she was adopted by the “perfect family” on Saturday, June 17.
“I haven't had a chance to speak with the family, but I'm hoping they will continue her bucket list and even add to it,” said Christine Rankin with Texas Humane Heroes. “They received a gift certificate from Painting with a Twist to paint her portrait at their Paint Your Pet Night! We are excited to see how it turns out!”
EARLIER: Meet Maddie: She’ll love you for as long as she can.
The compact, scruffy-haired sweetie is a special dog up for adoption at Texas Humane Heroes. Maddie had two lumps on her chest when she arrived at the Leander-based rescue group from the Hill Country Humane Society in Buchanan Dam. After biopsy, she was diagnosed by veterinarians from Firehouse Animal Health Center with terminal cancer. Treatment plans were considered, but with a low success rate for those options, Texas Humane Heroes staff and the Firehouse vets decided to focus on quality of life for the tiny miss. Doctors say life expectancy is about a year for Maddie, who will turn 4 in November.
Maddie lives in the moment! Texas Humane Heroes staff created a bucket list for her. Eat Tex-Mex on a patio? Done. Create a masterpiece? The paint is drying. Maddie’s big-ticket wish? An official family before she dies. Here’s what they say about her sweet personality and where she might fit:
“Maddie would do well in a wide variety of homes. She loves people of all ages and will fill an open lap anytime she has the opportunity. She isn't very high energy, and enjoys taking casual strolls to sniff out all the new smells. Maddie loves treats and takes them very politely. If a potential adopter currently has a dog, we suggest bringing the dog with them so both dogs can meet. We have great play yards and lots of space to see if it will be a good fit for Maddie and the family.”
Maddie is at the Leander adoption center for Texas Humane Heroes, which is a no-kill, nonprofit group that also has a outlet in Killeen. They take in cats and dogs from crowded city shelters across Texas. If you’re interested in adopting Maddie, you can meet her in Leander; her adoption fee is $120. Maddie is spayed, microchipped and current on shots. Her forever family will get the portrait she made and a gift certificate to Paint Your Pet Night at Painting with a Twist. Her time might be short, but it can still be packed with fun and love.
Maddie's not the only dog (or cat, kitten or puppy) looking for a home, of course. Austin Animal Center and surrounding shelters remain full. Austin Humane Society is having a free adoption event Saturday and Sunday. The Humane Society is open from noon to 7 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at 124 West Anderson Lane.
