Austinites love their canines and new data from Rover provides insight into how dog lovers are naming their pooches. 

The company, which connects dog owners with pet sitters and walkers, scoured its database of pup names to see which ones lead the pack. 

All the rage today: Human-inspired names. According to a press release, 44 percent of dog names in 2017 could also work for owners. Five of the top male dog names and six of the top female dog names are also on the list of top 100 baby names. 

In the Texas capital city, owners are loving names like Aggie and Pig. The city’s boozy reputation also inspired names like Kahlua, Jager and Hennessy to rise in popularity. But Austin’s top dog names consists of those in both nationwide top 10 lists. 

Here’s an overall list of the top male dog names, according to Rover:

  1. Max (No. 2 in Austin)
  2. Charlie (No. 1 in Austin)
  3. Cooper (No. 3 in Austin)
  4. Buddy (No. 5 in Austin)
  5. Jack
  6. Rocky
  7. Oliver (No. 4 in Austin)
  8. Bear
  9. Duke
  10. Tucker

And the top female dog names: 

  1. Bella (No. 1 in Austin)
  2. Lucy (No. 2 in Austin)
  3. Daisy (No. 4 in Austin)
  4. Luna (No. 3 in Austin)
  5. Lola (No. 5 in Austin)
  6. Sadie
  7. Molly
  8. Maggie
  9. Bailey
  10. Sophie

Rover users also took note of trendy names, with monikers from all parts of popular culture getting assigned to pooches. “Game of Thrones” names are up 12 percent, incuding “Khaleesi,” “Snow,” and “Arya. Names derived from 1990s entertainment made up 3 percent of dog names in 2017. Even dog lingo like “Pupper” and “Corgo” are catching on.
