In today’s Food Matters, I highlighted a recent award that the Beerists podcast earned:
The premise of the Beerists podcast is pretty simple: John Rubio, Anastacia Kelly, Grant Davis, Mike Lambert and a rotating roster of guests try beers and then rate them. But not so fast — the Beerists’ cast does this in each loosely themed episode with a funny, irreverent and knowledgeable tone and has gathered such a following of listeners (reaching more than 70,000 downloads per month) that the Austin-based podcast has won the same award for two years in a row.
The Beerists nabbed the Best Food/Drink Podcast at the Ninth Annual People’s Choice Podcast Awards on Jan. 5 in Las Vegas during the New Media Expo.
Up against podcasting heavyweights such as NPR’s “The Splendid Table” and the Nerdist’s “Dining with Doug and Karen,” the Beerists’ cast didn’t expect any kind of win at all, thinking last year’s was just a fluke.
“We weren’t even paying attention to the livestream of the awards ceremony in Vegas,” Rubio said. “We found out when people started Tweeting and Facebooking their congratulations to us, which a couple of us thought might be a prank at first.”
