Small Vietnamese restaurant in North Austin produces appealing dishes

Want to set your mouth on fire at lunch and leave the embers glowing for the 15-minute drive back to the office?

Then try the lemon grass beef, one of the regular lunch specials at Sunflower, a delightful Vietnamese restaurant in the strip mall near the Target at Research Boulevard and Ohlen Road.

The beef — thin and tender in a dish that emphasized fresh green beans more than meat — was exceptionally spicy. So much so, in fact, that a sidekick who enjoys zesty fare emphasized for hours afterward how hot it had been. Having sampled a couple of forkfuls that day, and finding it spicy, but not over the top, I returned to see whether my experience matched hers.

It did. The lemon grass beef ($7.40 for the lunch special) is the type of dish in which the heat builds and builds to the point that it could be excessive for many diners. Nonetheless, it was a tasty dish and a hearty meal, too, served with a light and sweetly dressed cabbage salad, soup and a fried imperial roll (a spring roll is the other option).

For a lighter and nonzesty approach, the calamari salad ($3.70) was delicious. The uncoated squid, tossed with fresh mint leaves and cabbage salad, was wonderfully tender, with not a hint of rubbery bite.

An entrée, the combination flat noodle stir fry ($8.75) featured chicken, beef and shrimp — all moist and tender — with vegetables over wide noodles in a brown sauce.

The chicken pho ($5.50) brought an aromatic broth with noodles and a generous helping of sliced chicken breast. As with other bowls of pho, it came with the traditional sides of sprouts, sliced jalapeños and fresh basil that could be added to the bowl in small or large amounts. The vermicelli barbecue pork and shrimp ($6.75) combined slices of lightly charred pork, shrimp and sliced imperial rolls over noodles that also topped a layer of shredded lettuce, chopped mint and sprouts.

The vermicelli, pho, flat noodle and calamari dishes demonstrated that a culinary blaze isn't the only thing being served at this small, often-crowded restaurant. There are many other reasons to make a trip to this Vietnamese spot.

Great Authentic Vietnamese

They have the best spring rolls in town by a long shot. The squid or beef salads are as good as it gets. The bun is not the best here, so don't get it (go to Hai Ky -- best in Austin for bun). Branch out, they have a lot more here than you first realize. You can roll your own spring rolls at the table if you like. Some of the lightly fried fish "ca" is just like being back in Vietnam! They have huge prawns and other delights that you have to look for. There are 2 menus by the way . . . ask for both. Delicious and authentic, this place is for those that like authentic food. I lived in Vietnam for over a year, and this is probably my favorite Vietnamese in town. If you've been to Vietnam, the decor here is almost exactly like the ambiance in VN. No frills. If you are into ambiance don't eat at a Vietnamese restaurant. Only Saigon River downtown has any ambiance, but food is average. As far as the service, also not stellar. But as for the women not being nice and friendly, that's may be in direct response to your vibe. Everytime I smile, I receive a smile in return.

Good food but horrible service

Posted by elibutton on 06/27/08

I can't believe these guys haven't shut down yet because they're notorious for bad service. I'm talking the service where you have to beg to have your water or ice tea refilled, and there's no love or thank yous or welcomes provided. It's a small place that usually packs up during lunch hours, but I've stopped my usual visits (3x / month) due to the horrible service. They have good curry here, but don't count on getting a refill of water to keep you cool, so bring your own and you'll do just fine.

below average

I'm not sure what is meant by 'Asian Service'... I've had no problems with the service at Pho Van, Pho Saigon or at Kim Phung. The service here is lax, but the place is smaller than my living room so I had no problem simply asking across the restaurant for service. The ambiance is non-existent. The food is really pretty below average. I've tried the banh xeo, bun, spring rolls, imperial rolls, and clay pots. The only thing I found at all good were the clay pots. I doubt I'll be back after trying a couple of times. Just about everything I had was simply WAY below average.
