Austin has already proven to be a super dog-friendly city, but many local dining spots, breweries and rescue organizations are taking their puppy love up a notch on Saturday — National Dog Day.
Here are the places in town with events that you and your favorite furry friend(s) can choose from to celebrate their special existence in your life.
Black Star Co-op: Think your pup is basically the cutest canine in the entire universe? Prove you’re not just a besotted owner with the brewpub’s returning Cutest Doggo Contest on the Black Star patio. Bring your pretty pooch to win prizes starting at 12 p.m. Aug. 26. 7020 Easy Wind Dr.
Cane Rosso: The Sunset Valley pizza joint is donating $5 from select pies to Austin Pets Alive. Throughout National Dog Day, order one of five pizzas — each one named for the Cane Rosso crew’s pups, including the sausage-and-mushroom Gus — to help out the cause. 11 a.m. Aug. 26, 4715 S. Lamar Blvd. Ste. 103.
Craftsman: Bring your leashed pal to the eastside bar for this Sunday celebration featuring giveaways, dog products like collars and bow ties, $2 hot dogs, drink specials and more. 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 27, 2000 E. Cesar Chavez St.
Hops & Grain: The East Austin brewery’s National Dog Day soiree will bring out the Austin Animal Center’s mobile adoption center with adorable shelter animals that you can take home without having to pay any of the usual adoption fees. 12 to 4 p.m. Aug. 26., 507 Calles St.
Independence Brewing: With its ongoing Service Dogs Inc. fundraiser this summer — which donates money to the organization with every purchase of its RedBud and Cucumber RedBud brews — Independence has already proven its devotion to man’s best friend.
For its National Dog Day celebration, the brewery will be giving again to Service Dogs Inc. Head to the taproom, and with the purchase of a $10 can-shaped dog toy for your pooch and a RedBud coloring book for you, you’ll get a free beer. All of the proceeds go to the service dogs group. 1 p.m. Aug. 26, 3913 Todd Ln. #607.
Lucille Patio Lounge: Dogs will find themselves in play heaven with the Dog Day Afternoon benefit for Austin Pets Alive. They will have puppy pools, and there will be games, a doggy kissing booth, a magician and more. Human drink specials include cocktails from Tito’s Vodka and Tanqueray Gin and beer from Circle Brewing. 3:30 p.m. Aug. 26. 77 Rainey St.
Real Ale Brewing: Drive a little outside of town for what the Blanco brewery is calling “a dog lover’s dream of an event.” At the Dog Days of Summer celebration, you’ll get to meet the dog of Real Ale’s co-owners, who named Han’s Pils after him. Plus, there will be $2 Han’s cans, Hans-themed prizes and a doggy cool-down station. 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 26, 231 San Saba Ct., Blanco.
Waterloo Ice House: You can start National Dog Day celebrations a day early with Waterloo’s Puppy Party on the patio, a benefit for Austin Pets Alive. There will be games and prizes, a specialty hot dog menu and more. 6 p.m. Aug. 25. 3203 N. Capital of Texas Hwy.
West Elm: Even the trendy furniture store is throwing a National Dog Day Pet Party. You can take your four-legged friend to shop with you at West Elm, which is featuring local makers like Peloton and complimentary drinks and snacks for you and your pet. Pflugerville Pets Alive will be present with adoptable puppies. 1 to 5 p.m. Aug. 26. 1011 W. Fifth St.
Yard Bar: In addition to Hops & Grain’s Saturday party with the Austin Animal Center is a Sunday meet-and-greet at one of Austin’s most fur baby-friendly bars. But you won’t be shaking hands with a person — you’ll be petting Zoe, the dog of Hops & Grain founder Josh Hare, who named one of his most popular beers after her.
Yard Bar will also have Hops & Grain’s elusive Pale Dog Pale Ale available. 11 a.m. Aug. 27. 6700 Burnet Rd.
