Having a free Texas beer to sip on while getting your haircut has been a pinnacle of the customer experience at Austin’s homegrown Birds Barbershop. That beer had previously come from Shiner — but now is going to come from local brewery Independence Brewing.
Each Birds location here and in Houston starting July 1 will have Independence’s Austin Amber, Power & Light Pale Ale, and RedBud Berliner Weisse available for customers 21 and over. For Birds co-founders Michael Portman and Jayson Rapaport, the decision to switch to Independence was an easy one.
“We love that Independence is born and brewed right here in Austin, just like Birds,” Portman said in a press release. “Now, as we expand our barbershops into Houston, we’re excited to offer our new neighbors a chance to taste some of our hometown’s original craft beers.”
To kick off the partnership, Birds is offering a free koozie to accompany the beers throughout the month of July. The three Independence beers Birds is featuring are all, in some way, an homage to Austin landmarks, whether that’s the old, art deco-inspired Seaholm Power Plant or the lakefront dog park Red Bud Isle.
