Guess what, guys: Lagers are some of the greatest beers on earth.
That’s technically an opinion you can feel free to dispute in the comments, but it’s one that the Austin Beer Guide writers and I, at least, can agree on whole-heartedly.
The guys feel so passionately about it that they’ve devoted an entire event — an entire hot, sweaty afternoon — to these refreshing brews with the returning Lager Jam. Yes, it’ll be hot in the Billy’s on Burnet parking lot on Aug. 5, but it’ll be worth it.
Austin Beer Guide launched Lager Jam in 2014, when “most of the beer world were focused on barrel-aged, high ABV, sour, or super hoppy beers,” co-founder Chris Troutman said. “Lagers are a more subtle beer, that take a special attention to detail from the brewer to keep the yeast happy and let it do its thing. They take a little more talent at the brewhouse helm to perfect, require more time and patience to ferment, and should be appreciated as such.”
Still not sure you agree? Let the beers speak for themselves at the 4th annual Austin Lager Jam, which runs from 1 to 5 p.m. at Billy’s on Burnet at 2105 Hancock Dr. This year’s event will have about two dozen super refreshing lagers from some of Austin’s best breweries — as well as North by Northwest’s Beerliner bus to help keep you cool and free cold-brew and wholly water from South Austin neighbors Spokesman and St. Elmo Brewing.
You can also get some pretty cool swag. Purchase the Lager Jam Party Pack ahead of time for $25 to get a custom glass, Lager Jam 4 T-shirt and three beers of your choice (make your picks below). These will be available on-site a la carte as well (but always sell out), and you’ll be able to purchase more drink tickets for $5.

Because of the heat, remember to take it easy on the alcohol. Pace yourself and drink some of that wholly water from St. Elmo Brewing before moving onto the next pint. Troutman has summed up the afternoon pretty well — it’s for people who “like to stand around for hours in a hot parking lot drinking beer for what it's meant for; chilling out and have a good time.”
