For National Ice Cream Day, a sweet, boozy pairing you never thought you needed

Lazarus Brewing and Lick Honest Ice Creams are pairing their wares at a special tasting on July 31, two weeks after one of the most important holidays for Texans, National Ice Cream Day. Arianna Auber / American-Statesman

Beer and ice cream might sound like odd bedfellows, but Lazarus Brewing and Lick Honest Ice Creams are putting them together in the ultimate booze and food pairing for an event that has the added benefit of being for a good cause.

On July 31, the two local companies are teaming up for what they are calling the “happiest of happy hours”: five of Lick’s ice creams paired with five of Lazarus’ beers. All of Lick’s proceeds from the tasting will benefit the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Texas. Tickets are $40.

Both the scoops shop and the brewery promise during the pairing that you’ll probably taste unexpected flavor combinations — such as Lazarus’ Amandus Strong Golden Ale with Lick’s Goat Cheese, Thyme and Honey ice cream, which is Lick chef and co-owner Anthony Sobotik’s current favorite match-up. The beer’s fruity character complements the herbal sweetness of the ice cream, without either being too overbearing.

With National Ice Cream Day on July 16, doesn’t the Lazarus and Lick pairing, taking place at the East Austin brewery, sound like just the kind of event you should make sure you have tickets to attend? In addition to that, Lick is donating 7 percent of its total revenue on July 16, a Sunday, to the Ronald McDonald House nonprofit. The events are part of its Cones for a Cause campaign.

Lick opened its fourth location earlier this year in the Mueller area but also has shops on South Lamar Boulevard and Burnet Road. Each one will be accepting donations to Cones for a Cause throughout the month.
