Ah, Bikini Bottom. Home of Krabby Patties, the Chum Bucket, Squidward’s Easter Island home and the greatest Texpat the sea has ever known, Sandy Cheeks.
In a season one episode of “SpongeBob Squarepants,” Sandy tells her buddies SpongeBob and Patrick how much she’s missing her home state of Texas (any Texan who’s left the state for more than a week can commiserate).
She proceeds to sing a twangy country song about barbecue and pecan pie and wide open skies, complete with yodeling (is yodeling really a Texas thing? I feel like it’s more European than anything).
A few Central Texas SpongeBob fans have decided to get together at the Texas State Capitol and pay homage to our Texpat squirrel friend. On Oct. 5 starting at 3 p.m., you can enjoy a game of eels and escalators, serving up pretty patties, a flash mob to the legendary hit “Gary Come Home” and pin the tail on the jellyfish, followed by a 7 p.m. singalong to Sandy’s ode to her home state.
They’ve organized the event, titled “Sing 'I wanna go hoOooOoOOmme' at the Capitol” on Facebook, with more than 1,500 people saying they’ll attend.
There’s also a (seemingly unrelated) event at the Capitol on Friday, Oct. 20, titled “Make Fun of Texas at the Texas State Capitol.” It’s referencing a later moment in the same “Texas” episode of the show, where SpongeBob and Patrick decide to hate on Texas to convince Sandy not to leave.
Spoiler alert: She decides to stay in Bikini Bottom.
But we all know that deep in her heart, she’ll always be a Texas girl.
