The 2017 Zilker Summer Musical, “The Wizard of Oz,” opens Friday at Zilker Hillside Theater. Here’s what you need to know about the free production, which runs Thursday through Sunday evenings from July 7 to Aug. 12.
- Each performance starts at roughly 8:15 p.m.
- Parking: The Zilker Hillside Theater is located in the heart of Zilker Park, which can make parking and getting there a bit tricky. You can go in through any of the entrances, and signs will direct you to parking. Here are the Zilker Theatre Productions’ tips for getting there, along with a map. Parking is metered through the city, but it’s free on Thursdays and Fridays. On Saturdays and Sundays, the meters will be turned off at 6 p.m.
Public transportation: Since parking is so tricky, you may want to try getting there by a means other than driving. Check out one of the local ride-hailing apps put to the test by the Statesman’s 512Tech team, use Capital Metro or ride a bike (you can rent a bike from B-Cycle if you don’t have your own).
Rules: Even though it’s Zilker Park, dogs aren’t allowed at the musical. Neither is smoking or glass containers, but you can bring chairs. If they’re less than 26 inches, you can use them in the main seating area, and taller chairs are allowed at the top of the hill and in the ADA seating area. You can also rent a chair for a $5 donation.
What to bring: A blanket, chairs, sunscreen and bug spray are advised. You can also buy refreshments like water, candy and soda from the concessions stand for $2 each. You may also want to bring cash to take part in the raffle drawing or donate to Zilker Theatre Productions.
