Fewer food dishes in Austin hold as much of a cult status as the queso at Kerbey Lane Cafe. So much so, the queso was ranked as the best in Texas by the food site Wide Open Eats.
According to Kerbey Lane’s menu, the popular appetizer is made by adding queso to guacamole and topping with pico de gallo. The result is a chunky yet creamy dip perfect for tortilla chips. The queso can even be made without dairy for vegan eaters.
Despite the top spot on the list, numerous Facebook commenters were very quick to voice their dissent. Not only unhappy about Kerbey Lane’s dish ranking No. 1, some users felt other Austin-area restaurants, such as Torchy’s Tacos and Matt’s El Rancho, were snubbed.
As Wide Open Eats writer J. Marie Martin notes, most of the Kerbey Lane locations around Austin are open twenty-four hours a day. So perhaps the key to being named the best queso in Texas is the ability to eat said queso at 2 a.m.
But for all the debate, Kerbey queso has its fans.
