Frozen or on the rocks, margaritas are one of Austin's favorite things to drink. Enjoy samples of them at the upcoming margarita celebration.

The classic combination of tequila, citrus and a little bit of salt is sublime and practically a necessity in these tequila-loving parts — so much so that October will herald yet another boozy event: the Austin Margarita Festival.

And yes, the fiesta will have margaritas galore. The classic lime drink will be joined by more than 20 others with a wide range of flavors, including coconut, chocolate, green apple, jalapeño, grapefruit and even one called Bourbon St. Hurricane. (I’m not so sure that tequila should be mixed with pumpkin spice, another featured flavor, but the fest could well prove me wrong.)

There will also be wine, beer and other kinds of mixed drinks, if somehow you tire of the mighty margarita. Live music from bands and DJs, plus margarita-friendly food, will round out the afternoon on Oct. 28.

Get your general admission tickets now to enjoy a little early-bird discount. They’re $30 now, will go up to $40 on Aug. 31 through Oct. 27, and will be $55 on the day of the fest. These get you a souvenir cup and six 5 oz. pours of the various margarita mixes (or of any of the other drink options).

Early bird tickets for VIP admission have already sold out, but you can still buy the $85 option through Oct. 27 before the VIP tickets go up to $120 on the day of the fest. The cost is quite a jump from general admission, but it might be worth it: VIP-goers get free barbecue and Mexican food, lounge seating and access to the $1 VIP bar, among other perks.

Both ticket options grant you a vote in the Best Margarita showdown that local bars and restaurants will compete in for bragging rights. You’ll sample the choices and choose the winner via text.

All this tequila-soaked revelry is happening at none other than the Austin American-Statesman parking lot at 305 S. Congress Ave. from noon to 8 p.m. on Oct. 28. To buy your tickets and get more information, visit austinmargaritafestival.com.
