A city doesn’t get the title of “Live Music Capital of the World” without being a hotspot for music lovers.
A series of heat maps recently published by The New York Times visualizes the country’s most popular musicians on YouTube. The shades range from white, which means an artist is less popular, to dark purple, signaling an artist is very popular in that area.
Unfortunately, the maps don’t highlight exact zip codes, counties or cities. But by approximating Austin’s location on the maps, there are three music acts Austinites are clearly viewing more than others on YouTube. The Austin area is colored the darkest shades of purple on the fan maps for rapper Kendrick Lamar, alt-rock/nu-metal group Linkin Park and the heavy metal band Metallica.
In addition, the Times singles out Austin as a hot spot for listening to British rock group Coldplay. The band “is quite popular in several of America’s biggest cities and mostly white college towns like Austin, Tex.,” according to the Times.
Other acts with a solid fanbase in Central Texas include Michael Jackson, Drake, Shakira, J. Cole, Lady Gaga and Travis Scott.
Pop stars Zayn, Justin Bieber and Meghan Trainor are less popular in Austin than the rest of the United States.
