Everyone loves a good online rankings list. Said lists either give validation to reader’s pre-existing opinions, or they do a great of of drumming up controversy due to what those lists will inevitably leave out. But one thing’s for certain— those online lists are always better when they include Texans.

Staff writers over at The Ringer recently published a list of “Midyear Music Awards,” because the year’s halfway over and presumably because these lists get a lot of clicks. (They’re not alone; we recently published a list of the Year’s Best Country Albums So Far.)

Two artists from Texas landed on The Ringer’s list: Ausitnite Sunny Sweeney and the Grand Prairie-born Selena Gomez.

Though the list has no numerical ranking, Sweeney’s heartbreaking “Bottle By My Bed” showed up first, as staff writer Rob Harvilla’s pick for “Best Old-Fashioned Country Tear-Jerker:”

The bottle in “Bottle by My Bed” is not for her, you see. ‘All my friends are raisin’ babies / I’m still raisin’ Cain,’ Sweeney begins. ‘They must think that because I’ve waited / that I don’t want the same.’ They are mistaken. For a tender ballad, the brutal one-liners come fast and furious: ‘Only call my husband baby ’cause I love the word.’ ‘Don’t even know you yet but I know I love you.’ And, finally, the bridge: ‘We wait / We wait / It’ll be our turn someday.’ This song is autobiographical. It is ‘For sale: baby shoes. Never worn’ in country-song form. You’ve been warned.

Gomez’s “Bad Liar” shows up immediately following Sweeney on the list, as staff writer Kate Knibbs’ pick for “Best Reason to Forgive Selena Gomez for ’13 Reasons Why’” (a show The Ringer was decidedly not a fan of):

I’m inclined to forgive Selena for her poorly-executed foray into teen dreck whenever I turn on her most recent single, ‘Bad Liar,’ which does not suck at all. In fact, ‘Bad Liar’ sounds like opening an ice-cold Coke in mid-August. It’s crisp and witty, with an understated Talking Heads sample anchoring Gomez’s dense, conversational vocals. Here’s hoping Gomez will keep channeling a more danceable Regina Spektor instead of a less responsible Aaron Spelling.

See The Ringer’s full list here, which also includes Lil Yachty, Algiers, Paramore and more. Whether or not you agree with everything on the list, we can all agree that sharing Texas music with everyone is never a bad decision.
