Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” is the most popular wedding song in America, according to data compiled by Spotify. Other musical pieces likely to show up on a wedding playlist around the country? Perhaps not surprisingly, “Marry You” by Bruno Mars, “All of Me” by John Legend and “Crazy in Love” by Beyoncé.
The Washington Post recently looked at the Spotify data to make some pretty cool discoveries about the music that people choose to commemorate one of the most important days of their life with.
For instance, there’s one song that Texas couples are more likely to play at their wedding than couples in any other state — and it’s probably not a surprise at all. The country act the Josh Abbott Band croons “She’s Like Texas” (“Most of the time she's as warm and friendly / Like the hills that surround Austin”) at many a first dance for Texas brides and grooms, according to the Washington Post.
“The lists of top wedding songs in each state tend to look similar,” the Washington Post article says. “But more informative is which song is the most uniquely popular in each state. Here’s how we get that bit of info: For every song in each state’s top 500 wedding songs, we subtracted the song’s rank in that state from the song’s rank nationwide to find the song with the biggest gap between the two.”
I was particularly interested in the Post’s story because I got married this spring, and choosing the songs for the ceremony and reception was one of the very few things I liked about the wedding planning process. My new husband and I walked down the aisle after saying our vows with “Best Day of My Life” by American Authors blasting thanks to the DJ we hired literally in the eleventh hour.
The song is upbeat and joyful and encapsulated the exhilarating feeling of those precious early moments of our marriage perfectly — it was so tempting to do a fist pump — and no doubt “Best Day of My Life” is somewhere on the Spotify list of top wedding songs. ‘Cause, hey, it likely is the best day of your life.
