360 Summer Mixtape: Erin Ivey

Editor’s note: This article was originally published July 30, 2014

The mercury is rising. The streets are sizzling and the city has settled into a slightly slower groove. We present the 360 Summer Mixtape . Each week we’ll check in with a different figure in the Austin music scene for summery song selections and pro tips on keeping it cool through the hottest months of the year.

Track selector: Erin Ivey

Band: A lot of the guys in my band also play in The Finest Kind, a great R&B/Dub group. Most recently, I’ve collaborated with Elizabeth McQueen, Darden Smith, Michael Ramos, and Alex Marrero, to name a few. Austin’s got an amazing artistic community. All boats rise with the tide.

Next gigs: Sept. 5-7 - Sisters Folk Festival in Sisters, Oregon; Oct. 9 - The Listening Room at Winflo; Nov. 4-8 - Grammy Festival at Sea in Miami and the Bahamas; Nov. 14 - Full band show at Strange Brew

Favorite cold drink: A Rose Tattoo with Dulce Vida Tequila - it’s like a Paloma, but with a little rose syrup

Best way to cool off (that’s not Barton Springs): I like it hot, but I carry a folding paper fan just in case. It works just as well in rolling blackouts.

Summer show you’re psyched about: A 3-day music festival up in Michigan called Blissfest. This is it’s 34th season and I look forward to it all year long.

THREE SONGS FOR SUMMER

“The Water’s Fine” by Wendy Colonna - A sweet song from Wendy’s latest most wonderful album, Nectar. It was inspired by Barton Springs and it rolls around my head all day long.

“How Loud Your Heart Gets” by Lucius - The last song on their Wildewoman album. Wave your lighters in the air, people. This chorus begs to be sung at the top of your lungs.

“Stupid Money” by Wayne Marshall - Wayne opened for Stephen Marley at Mohawk a couple months ago and he blew me away. This is one of my favorite tracks off his latest (Tru Colors), featuring his young son singing the chorus. Catchy hook. Great groove. Car windows down. Hands in the air.
