It was 20 years ago today (OK, not actually today) that Tim and Karrie League opened the first Alamo Drafthouse on Colorado St.
Over the next two decades, the Alamo Drafthouse rewrote the rules for movie-going.
There had been Drafthouse-style movie theaters before but none with the Leagues’ mix of good food, clever booze, enthusiastic cinephilia, canny genre bookings and a fanatical no-talking policy that is increasingly the industry standard. There are now Drafthouses in 28 locations.
20th anniversary celebrations kicked off May 25 with a party at the Drafthouse Ritz. “Baby Driver” screened. Everyone got a sword.
Here are four forthcoming events that will keep the party going (there will likely not be swords).
- The cast and crew of "War For the Planet of the Apes” will be on hand for its New York red carpet special screening July 10. The pre-event with director Matt Reeves along with stars Andy Serkis, Woody Harrelson, Steve Zahn, Amiah Miller and Joe Letteri will be simulcast to participating theaters.
"The Monster Squad” returns for its 30th anniversary with a touring reunion featuring lead cast members Andre Gower, Ryan Lambert, and Ashley Bank in person. Final date is being locked down; look for it in late August.
- On Aug. 22, the American Genre FIlm Archive will reunite the team behind “Effects” for the first time ever. “Effects” was hammered together by some associates of George Romera and never released theatrically. Look for Tom Savini, Joe Pilato, producer-star John Harrison, director Dusty Nelson, and editor-producer Pat Buba to reunite for the first time in decades.
- Bill Pullman and director Jared Moshé will be celebrating "The Ballad of Lefty Brown” with a marathon featuring the three westerns you must see before you die.
Also look for a line of 20th anniversary apparel via Drafthouse’s merchandise arm, Mondo. First up? The 2017 Badass Cinema T-shirt featuring Pam Grier. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this shirt will go to Project Angel Heart, a Denver-based charitable organization Grier favors. There will also be a commemorative beer called “Action! Anniversary Ale” from Austin Beerworks.
