An Austin Public Library card now gets you the Kanopy movies service

As of today, Austin Public Library card holders have access to more than 30,000 films for free.

The Austin Public Library has added access to the on-demand video platform called Kanopy. It is essentially a streaming service a bit like Netflix or Shudder, except one needs only an Austin library card to access it. There are no commercials or fees for users. The library has it covered for them; all users need is a library card to get started.

Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco and Phoenix library systems also offer Kanopy to its users.

Of the 30,000 films about 60 percent are documentaries, but there are also plenty of feature films, rare and hard to find titles, and classic films.

Kanopy can be accessed from various devices and platforms, including Roku, iOS and Android and is launching on Apple TV in the next few weeks. Which is to say you do not actually have to be physically present in the library to use Kanopy. (But you should go to the library often because libraries are incredible.)

Austin’s new Central Library at 710 W. Cesar Chavez St. is slated to open 10 a.m. Oct. 28.
