This scarecrow sculpture of Pennywise is just one of the pieces of straw art that people will glimpse at Sunday's Last Straw Fest at the Umlauf Sculpture Garden & Museum.

The Umlauf Sculpture Garden & Museum has been taken over by life-sized — and, in some cases, larger-than-life — art of a very different kind: a variety of scarecrow sculptures on display as part of the Last Straw Fest, running on Oct. 29 this year.

And boy, some of the scarecrows might really scare more than just the crows. Take the one that looks eerily like Pennywise, the creepy clown more simply known as “It” in the recent blockbuster movie based off Stephen King’s book of the same name. There’s even a red balloon, y’all.

But the Last Straw Fest is intended to be a family-friendly fall festival, so at least the Pennywise scarecrow won’t come to life and send us all running for the hills. Instead, we should expect something far more fun. There will be pumpkin carving, fall-themed family activities, food trucks, music and more, including a competition determining which scarecrow-making team made the best straw art.

While at the festival, everyone is encouraged to choose their favorite scrarecrow and vote for it in the People's Choice and Kid's Choice awards. The scarecrow sculptures, according to the rules of the contest, must be comprised of at least 25 percent straw.

The free Last Straw Fest runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 29 at Umlauf, 605 Robert E. Lee Rd. For more information, visit umlaufsculpture.org.
