Homemade fudge, vegan ice cream and a number of unusual soda flavors — these are the sweet wonders that await at a new shop in the Second Street District downtown. Austin’s Toy Joy has opened candy store and ice cream parlor Yummi Joy on West Second Street, providing a pop of color to the pedestrian-friendly block.
It’s going to be a two-store paradise for kids (and, let’s be honest, for adults, too): Yummi Joy is open daily next door to sibling shop Toy Joy, which moved from its campus-area home to downtown several years ago. This year marks Toy Joy’s 30th anniversary.
The candy shop is a collaborative project with another local business, Sweet Ritual, whose whose co-founder Amelia Raley first worked at Toy Joy when it was located at Guadalupe and 29th streets. She served ice cream there but decided to open Sweet Ritual, serving dairy-free scoops, with a former Amy’s Ice Creams employee, Valerie Ward, in 2011.
As a result, Yummi Joy serves Sweet Ritual flavors like salted caramel, mint chip, peanut butter cup and unicorn poop (which no doubt tastes better than it sounds). There are also a variety of sodas, coffee shots and drinks made with local Little City Coffee Roasters, and all the candy a kid could ask for.
A grand opening is in the works, but in the meantime, Yummi Joy is hosting a couple of tasting nights on Sept. 20 and 21 that will provide samples of all those sweet products, including miniature cones, drip coffee and fudge.
Yummi Joy is open at 409 W. Second St. with the hours of 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday, and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. For more information, visit facebook.com/yummijoy.
