Vegan milkshakes in Austin sound so much like something we’d be obsessed with that it seems surprising a whole concept hadn’t been devoted to them until now.
Our obsession starts tomorrow, when Milky Way Shakes debuts as Austin’s first vegan milkshake truck. The truck’s two co-founders, Moni Burgin and Rachel Horesovsky, make the ice cream from coconut milk and mix the shakes with almond milk, according to Eater Austin.
Milkshakes on the menu are creatively named and include the Grackle Massacre with caramel, chocolate, cinnamon and cayenne; the Oreo Borealis with mint, Oreo and a fudge swirl; and the Violet Beauregarde with blueberry compote, meringues and a candied flower. Customers can build their own milkshake as well.
Burgin and Horesovsky realized their dream of opening Milk Way Shakes through the use of a Kickstarter, which helped them raise more than $10,000 early last year.
“We will be using coconut milk instead of cow’s milk as our base, lessening our impact on the environment both to produce and store it, as coconut milk doesn’t need to be refrigerated,” they said on the Kickstarter page.
The Kickstarter indicates that someday, Austinites might get to order French fries with their shakes (because is there anything better than dipping crispy fries in a cold shake?), but for now, the shakes are the focus of the menu.
Milky Way Shakes will celebrate its grand opening while parked at Spider House, at 2908 Fruth St., 1 to 9 p.m. tomorrow and Sunday behind the patio stage. For more information, visit milkywayshakes.com.
