For the second year in a row, San Marcos is celebrating its favorite mythical beast: the mermaid.

Long the unofficial mascot for the community southwest of Austin, the mermaid is “rooted” in the city’s history, according to the Mermaid Society of San Marcos, which organizes the parade. The city’s affinity for the fantastical create comes from the Aquarena Springs Theme Park, which hosted an Underwater Mermaid Show.

The parade takes place from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 16. It will feature the city’s Mermaid Queen (crowned at an event the night before, the Mermaid Society Ball on Sept. 15). The parade is free for all ages and features presentations on environmental and conservation efforts, a local art market and art-inspired workshops for all ages.
