The only thing that could possibly be better than boba tea is if it comes spiked — and that’s what we’ll get with the Austin arrival of Elton Keung, who has made a name for himself in Los Angeles serving up creative bubble teas at his shop Labobatory.
As part of a two-day Labobatory pop-up, he’ll head behind the bar at the Peached Tortilla on Oct. 18 and 19 to serve up a handful of his signature boba cocktails, with potential drinks including the Mango Fuego (a spicy mango and tequila concoction), Taro Mezcal (with taro milk tea and mezcal) and the Creamy Bobagasm (vodka, coffee liqueur and cream with honey boba). The menu isn’t quite finalized yet.
Keung will also be in Houston on Oct. 15 with nonalcoholic boba tea. But Austin’s pop-up next week, according to Eater Austin, marks the first time he’s brought his boozy boba tea creations outside of California. He regularly hosts what he calls “alcoholic boba nights” at Seven Bar Lounge in downtown LA.
He has been wanting to spread his love of boba beyond California and is able to do that following a successful Kickstarter last year. The entrepreneur originally got his start in the otherwise nascent boozy boba tea business with a speakeasy a few years ago but wanted a more accessible spot with a different concept — the place that has now become Labobatory in the San Gabriel Valley.
The Labobatory pop-up will be from 5 to 10 p.m. on both Oct. 18 and 19 at the Peached Tortilla’s brick-and-mortar space at 5520 Burnet Rd., Ste. 100.
