The Contemporary Austin continues its popular Rooftop Architecture Film Series with the Austin premiere of “Sign Painters,” screening two nights, Oct. 16 & 17.
The 2010 film by Faythe Levine and Sam Macon offers a charming first-hand history of the tradition of hand-lettering and -painting of billboards, storefronts and promotional signs — a skilled craft that’s declined against technological advancements.
Levine and Macon published a companion book to their film which features an introduction by artist Ed Ruscha, whose deadpan representations of typographically-based American iconography capture the complex codes of quotidian visual culture.
“Sign Painters” trains its lens on the individual stories of more than two dozen sign painters working across the country today who busily maintaining the art and profession of hand-crafted signage.
A Q&A with the directors of “Sign Painters” follows each screening.
