Inert blog struggles back to life

Posting something on this blog at this point, a nice three months after the last post, might be the Internet equivalent of poking a stick at a dude in a coma in order to wake him up, but we’ll give it a shot.

We did not attend the San Diego Comic Convention, but a whole mess of other folks did and we defer to their judgment.

Veteran comics journalist/critic Tom Spurgeon’s The Comics Reporter often features excellent wrap-ups of such events and this week was no exception

However, no matter how crowded and unpleasant Comic-Con looked, it’s still a week when What’s Good finds itself more excited about comics than not. Some titles we have been enjoying:

Anything involving “World War Hulk:” Seriously, the Hulk is a character I never even gave a toss about when it made sense, like when I was about 8. But this summer crossover event, the mainstream version of a blockbuster summer movie, is wildly entertaining. Long story short: A royally cheesed-off Hulk returns to Earth and tries to smash the folks (Mr. Fantastic, Iron Man, Black Bolt) who exiled him into space last year. Also, it has one of the best series titles ever.

All-Star Superman: Still the best mainstream superhero comic. Smart, beautifully rendered and oddly touching.

Jack Kirby’s Fourth World Omnibus: Deluxe reissue of one of the most whacked comics of the past 40 years.

More tomorrow. Seriously.
