What we’re looking forward to

Here are a few highlights from the comics shipping tomorrow:

“Fables” #61 (DC, $2.99) - Former Austinite Bill Willingham writes the best fantasy title on the stands. Period.

“Marvel Adventures: Avengers” #13 (Marvel, $2.99) - Writer Jeff Parker and illustrator Leonard Kirk continue to show to the masses how to make fun superhero books for all ages. I mean, really, is your 8-year old going to get an “Attack of the 50 Ft Woman” joke? No.

“Misery Loves Comedy” by Ivan Brunetti (Fantagraphics, $24.95) - A collection of the first three issues of Ivan Brunetti’s early work. A master of funny, early ’90s dork nihilism, Brunetti is clearly a man in need of a better class of SSRI drugs. Obnoxious, indulgent and often hysterical. And for mature readers (such as they are).

“Things Just Get Away From You” by Walt Holcombe (Fantagraphics, $24.95) - Man, Fanta is just killing it this week. Speaking of ’90s throwback, this lovely hardcover collects Walt Holcombe’s late-1990s comics work with a bonus new story, “Hails at Sea.” Holcombe’s cartoony, animation-influenced style hit like a giant squirting lapel flower when he hit the scene back during the Clinton administration. See what the fuss was about.

“X-Factor: Many Lives Of Madrox” (Marvel, $19.99) - Written by Peter David, my respect for whom grows by the day, and penciled by Pablo Raimondi (ditto), this collects X-Factor #13 - #18, including the issue where everyone goes to superhero shrink Doc Samson. State of the art full-color entertainment with punching and whining. Excellent.

I know this couldn’t be more wrong of me, but I’m looking forward to “All-Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder” #5. If you read the series as a surreal comedy (and can actually remember what happened in #4), it’s pretty entertaining. Either that or Bats has his own milk-bottling plant as part of the WayneCo’s holdings. Think of the gag gifts he must be able to dole out …
