Oh man, I hope Baldur's Gate II is going to be on your Great Game list. It's the five year anniversary and everything!

Yep, I cannot say I am surprised by the failure of ESPN and their STUPID new system. I hosted a FF league on their site for six years and was happy to pay for it, as the they always have *the best* fantasy analysis, hands down. This year when I went back to start my league, even setting it up was so buggy that I knew we were in trouble. And of course having to pay extra for all the analysis that had previously been either free or included with your league fee was just ridiculous (are they no longer a legitimate sports news source for the general public?) Anyway, the clear and total focus on greed vs providing good service turned me off -- I and my league mates got our money refunded and went to play on NFL.com for free. That site that runs on cbs sportsline's engine and works much better than ESPN's ever did, actually. Whan an ordeal though.

Of course they're whining- they're Steelers' fans!

How about "Sopranos?" Or even "Godfather" if EA wants to expand on its franchise.

Work you way up from thug, to lieutenant to Capo. Might even be able to work some gambling stuff (poker?) in there to keep it interesting. Earn in-game money, then gamble it to make more. Avoid the FBI and rival gangs.

And an update from J Allard (he of the shaven head and injured body) from a chat transcript:

In response to a question about the core system (sans hard drive): "...another possibility is that 5 years from now that you want more storage on the box or on the network and be able to take advantage of that."

It seems disingenuous, if not downright hypocritical, for Allard to be talking about a 5-year horizon for the Xbox360. The Xbox 1 lasted what, three years? Two and a half if you take into account that MS isn't sourcing parts for them any more. I'll take any odds you like that MS is already in the planning stages for Xbox 2008.

To his credit, Allard presented at least one justification for the core system that seems pretty likely:
"similar to the shuffle, the boxter, the 4:3 tv, the 1mpix camera, we designed the core system as a way to get folks to come into the family at a cheaper prices and decide if an how they scale the system."

Read carefully--they're going after the lower-end gamer. The core system isn't a response to the PS3, it's a shot at Nintendo.

Whether they're successful will probably depend a lot on whether they're able to market the core system as a family-oriented system.

In any case, I'm not expecting Mario to jump ship ("It's-a me, Mario on Xbox-a Live!").

Nicely done, Kevin. Indeed, you even remembered O.J. in his leading role. (I always thought he was upstaged by Delta Burke as the team's owner the first season or two. Overall, though, his finest work until "The Naked Gun" came out.)

I'd thought the "Last Boy Scout" reference was the most obscure, but Woody jumped on that right away and most of my friends knew that one first. That movie must've done better box office than I remember.

-California Bulls from "1st & ten" on HBO (with O.J. Simpson as GM!)
-New York Emperors are from "Any Given Sunday"
-Washington Sentinels from "The Replacements"
and L.A. Stallions from "the Last Boy Scout"
-no one had answered correctly, and i've seen way too many football movies.

The Stallions were from The Last Boy Scout, I remember that. The rest sound like USFL teams, also something that would not be expensive to secure the rights to.

Since most hockey games allow one to turn such rules as two-line pass and icing off anyway, I'm not sure how the NHL rule change with regards to the red line could change much other than a couple of default settings.

I feel the changes to puck handling rules for goalies will be much more trouble for game developers this deep in the development cycle.

Hey ya:
Being the gamer schmuck that I am I got both the PS2 version and the PC version within a week of their release. In my defense I would like to say that I was hoping for a huge increase in the graphics from PS2 to PC. To be honest it didn't look THAT much better and it has the same fault that most consol to PC ports sufer from... I have yet to find a good joypad controller that has a "PS2" or "X-Box" configuration that will allow you to plug it in after loading the game and be playing with the same controls as the consol!
Any-hoo, Both the PS2 and PC version have "Strong Sexual content" which according to www.esrb.org says: "Graphic references to and/or depictions of sexual behavior, possibly including nudity". I hope Rockstar is requireing a written reason for returning this game. I think, in addition to being a comical read, they would also most likely go a long way towards showing what a manufactured crisis of morality this whole thing has been! Hope the verification of the rating helps. BTW it also lists "Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Strong Language, and Use of Drugs"...

I've yet to reach corporal, but my friend did a while back and he's been having a lot of success with the Medic's L85A1.

Most of the unlockables, from what I've been hearing, have been letdowns ... which stinks particularly since you have such a long wait between unlocks.

-Matt "ElScorcho360"

I can see how that would be massively disappointing, especially when having such a good night. The good new is, that at least for me, once I've set up the filters properly on the game browser the settings persist from session to session.

Incidentally, I made lance corporal recently and unlocked the M95 sniper rifle as my first weapon. It's rather disappointing. Armor-piercing it may be, but you still don't kill a person with one shot to the body and it seems more inaccurate than the M24 so headshots are harder. I'd recommend going with a different weapon. Still, the game is a blast, and I've been having a great time. Just got my basic combat engineer badge. The handle is Clauswitz, hope to see you online.

Oof. My inner sexist rears its ugly head.

Sorry.

Regarding JS, I hadn't read much other than he'd left Austin. I wasn't sure if he was still with NC in another office. We'd appreciate an update ...

But but what about those local girls at NCSoft? I hear they have one or two. :)

Speaking of NC, have you been tracking what Jake Song (of Lineage) has been up to since abandoning the Austin office of NC a year or two ago?

May I direct your attention to:

Thank you, Paul Anderson, for bringing not only Resident Evil, but Mortal Kombat, to the screen.

Pluses: It's not "Street Fighter".
