Hays forfeiture eliminates rival from playoff contention
The Lehman boys basketball team may have a score to settle when it plays rival Hays next season.
Despite being a game behind fourth-place Smithson Valley in the District 27-4A standings with one game to go in the regular season, Lehman’s 2011-12 season has been essentially ended by a Hays forfeiture. According to the Hays Free Press, the Rebels will forfeit Tuesday’s regular season finale against Smithson Valley because they had too many non-tournament games on their schedule.
Lehman, which has a 4-7 district record, could have forced a tiebreaker for the district’s final playoff spot with a Smithson Valley loss to Hays and a win over a Lockhart team that is 1-26 this season. Lehman and Smithson Valley split their season series.
But due to the forfeiture, Hays will be the only boys basketball program from its school district in the playoffs. The Rebels will be making their first postseason appearance since the 2000-01 season.
