KUT raises $1 million in 5 days

A million bucks in five days?

kut.jpg
Performance space at new KUT studios

No problem.

The folks over at 90.5 KUT-FM met their fundraising goal — and then some — during a weeklong pledge drive.

The money will help pay for the soon-to-open KUT Public Media Studios. The $9.8 million facility at the corner of Dean Keeton and Guadalupe streets on the University of Texas campus is set to open this summer.

“In the spirit of our new facility, this … campaign was a community-wide effort — from the individuals, families and businesses that contributed, to the artists and newsmakers who recorded campaign messages, to the volunteers who answered phones, to the vendors that donated food,” said Stewart Vanderwilt, the NPR affiliate’s director and general manager.

“KUT would not be preparing to move into a state-of-the-art facility were it not for the longtime, broad-based community support it receives on a daily basis.”

The station reports it received contributions — $25 up to $5,000 — from about 2,000 people and businesses.

'Bobby Bones Show's producer sets new world record for fist pumping

“My arm hurts, but it was awesome!”

Ray Fist Pump.jpg
Ray, ‘Bobby Bones Show’ producer

That’s what Ray, producer of “The Bobby Bones Show,” had to say this afternoon after setting a new world record for fist pumping.

Yes, fist pumping.

Starting at 7 p.m. Monday and continuing until 12:15 p.m. today, Ray fist pumped for 17 hours and 15 minutes straight, breaking the previous record — 17 hours — set last week by an Ohio man.

The show taped every single second and plans to submit the video to the folks at the “Guinness Book of World Records.”

“Ray loves to fist pump outside of the show, so I thought he’d like to do it during the show,” Bones said. “As crazy as it sounds, this was quite the athletic achievement.”

The nationally syndicated “Bobby Bones Show” is based here in Austin, airing on No. 1-rated 96.7 KISS-FM.

KVET alums say farewell to former studios

Get ready to say goodbye to another piece of Austin history.

kvet_1463830c.jpg
Former KASE/KVET studios at 705 N. Lamar Blvd.

The former KASE/KVET studios at 705 N. Lamar Blvd. will soon be razed to make way for a sleek new structure featuring ground-floor retail space topped by a four-level parking garage.

The project is one of several that Austin-based Schlosser Development has in the works near the North Lamar Boulevard and West Sixth Street intersection, in what’s now being called the city’s Market District.

Though it has been many, many years since 1300 KVET-AM, 98.1 KVET-FM and 100.7 KASE-FM moved to South Congress Avenue, that homely building adjacent to BookPeople and the flagship Whole Foods store still holds a special place in the hearts of many current and former employees. Several gathered recently to take one last look before the bulldozers arrive.

I asked a few of them to share their thoughts with me — and with you:

Welcome Jammin' 103.1 to Austin's airwaves

Surprise! Austin’s got a new radio station.

jammin.jpg

Clear Channel-owned Jammin’ 103.1 made its debut today, serving up rhythmic hits from today and yesterday — everyone from the Isley Brothers to Flo Rida.

Other artists you’re likely to hear include Mariah Carey, Destiny’s Child, Whitney Houston, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna and Stevie Wonder.

“Jammin’ 103.1 provides Austin a varied format that is not offered anywhere else on the dial,” said Jay Shannon, operations manager for Clear Channel’s Austin stations.

Does the Jammin’ moniker sound familiar? It should. Clear Channel previously operated Jammin’ 105.9 before selling that frequency to Crista Broadcasting, which rechristened it as Spirit 105.9.

The 103.1 frequency was previously home to a simulcast of sister station 1300 AM the Zone. Other local stations owned by San Antonio-based Clear Channel include 96.7 KISS-FM, KVET98.1 FM, KASE 101 and 102.3 the Beat.

KUT-FM hopes to raise $1 million for new studios in just 5 days

The wait’s almost over.

042812_radiocol_1450278k.jpg

Years in the making, the KUT Public Media Studio is set to open its doors this July, giving the city’s NPR affiliate a gorgeous, state-of-the-art — and high-profile — new home at the busy corner of Dean Keeton and Guadalupe streets on the University of Texas campus.

Beginning May 7, for the first time since work started, the station will solicit donations — on air and online — from listeners. The goal is to raise about a million bucks in just five days.

The 20,000-square-foot facility’s total cost is $9.8 million.

“We’ve been quietly working behind the scenes for three years, and now we want to give our entire community an opportunity to help us complete the building,” said Stewart Vanderwilt, director and general manager of 90.5 KUT-FM.

Comedy radio station catches on with Austin listeners

It’s a gamble that paid off big time.

041412_radiocol_3_1433296k.jpg
Chris Rock

Comedy 102.7, which launched in late October, has wasted no time overtaking several of Austin’s best-known radio stations in the monthly Arbitron ratings — even landing in the top 10 on a few occasions.

Looking at demographic data, the news is better, despite little promotion so far. One example: Among men ages 25 to 54, it ranks No. 1 in the afternoon drive spot, owner Emmis Communications reports.

Click here to see the latest ratings data for Austin broadcasters.

“We had no proof it was going to take off,” said Chris Edge, the station’s program director. “I haven’t heard of any other comedy station having the success we’re having.”

KUT's SXSW performances raise $35,000 for cancer center

NPR affiliate 90.5 KUT-FM reports its live South by Southwest broadcasts brought in more than $35,000 for the Seton Shivers Cancer Center — double last year’s total.

The station welcomed a number of well-known artists, including Ray Wylie Hubbard, Kat Edmonson, Justin Townes Earle and Ruthie Foster, to the Four Seasons Hotel Austin March 15-18. Listeners gained access by making a $10 donation to the cancer center.

More than 3,400 music lovers showed up, according to a KUT spokeswoman.

“We’re thrilled to have doubled our fundraising total since last year,” said Rob Hagelberg, general manager of the Four Seasons. “It’s so great to see the community come together to enjoy live music and to help support Central Texans living with cancer.”

Morning host Bryan Beck departs KGSR

Music lovers gathered Saturday morning at the W Austin Hotel for 93.3 KGSR-FM’s live South by Southwest broadcast featuring Keane and others got a shock when DJ Bryan Beck told them he’s leaving the station.

beck.JPG

“There was an audible gasp in the room, then I got a very nice round of applause,” Beck told me. “My hands were shaking. My knees were weak. I felt like I did when I bungee jumped. I was scared to death.”

Host of KGSR’s morning show for the past five years, Beck, 47, will move to the San Francisco area later this year. He’s been with the station since 1987, previously working the 9 a.m. to noon shift.

Beck’s wife, a financial advisor, is from the Bay Area, he said, and the two have an opportunity to move into a home belonging to her family.

Neither has a job lined up just yet.

“I was born and raised in Texas and never thought I’d leave, but we have an opportunity to begin a new life out there,” he said. “I’m going to wait and see what happens.”

Over the next few months, Beck said he plans to catalog the many artist interviews he’s conducted over the years — some so old they’re on digital audio tapes (DATs) and cassettes.

And, as you might expect, he’ll enjoy being able to sleep in.

“KGSR has been very good to me,” Beck said. “It has been an amazing ride.”

KUT starting work on Austin Music Map

It seems like a new place to hear live music pops up each and every day here in Austin.

Keeping up is difficult, to say the least.

That’s why the crew behind “Texas Music Matters” on 90.5 KUT-FM is starting work on the Austin Music Map, an interactive project aiming to document the city’s “distinct sonic geography.”

Producer Delaney Hall will spend the next year working as producer-in-residence at KUT, overseeing the project — one of 10 in the works nationwide.

“You hear all the time that Austin is the Live Music Capital of the World, but we want to explore why,” Hall said. “We’re curious to learn more about the stories and histories that thread through Austin’s different musical traditions — whether it’s bluegrass or conjunto or hip hop — and we want the whole city to help us map the places and venues that make Austin’s many vibrant musical subcultures possible.”

A celebratory music festival will take place when work wraps up next year, the station says.

More details to come.

Radio ratings: KISS, Majic No. 1 in December

December was the most wonderful time of the year for the fine folks at Austin’s Majic 95.5.

maraiah.JPG
Holiday hits gave Majic a ratings boost

The station’s all Christmas, all the time lineup helped it rocket up the December ratings chart, tying 96.7 KISS-FM for the No. 1 spot. It’s the first time in ages anyone’s even come close to KISS, numbers-wise.

A little further down the list, Comedy 102.7 FM continues to impress, landing in the Top 10. Not bad for a newcomer on a low-power signal - especially when you see who they’re beating, including KLBJ-FM and KVET-FM.

The rest of the list features, for the most part, the usual suspects.

Average quarter-hour ratings as of Jan. 4, courtesy of Radio-Info.com (numbers in parentheses indicate rank as of Dec. 7):

KUT 90.5 FM is reporting this morning that “Eklektikos” host John Aielli is back in an area hospital.

The longtime Austin radio host suffered a heart attack earlier this month, and spent nearly two weeks off the air while he recovered.

KUT’s Jody Denberg has been tapped to fill in for Aielli on today’s edition of “Eklektikos,” which runs from 9 a.m. to noon.

New morning show debuts on Austin's Greatest Hits

There’s a new morning show on Austin’s airwaves.

Bo Chase.jpg
Bo Chase

Bo Chase is now helming the wakeup shift on 98.9 FM Austin’s Greatest Hits, a station focused on oldies from the 1960s and ’70s. He debuted today in the 6 to 10 a.m. timeslot.

This isn’t Chase’s first time on Central Texas radio, though. He was part of the “Bo and Bama” show on Z102 from 1990 to 1994, and has been heard on several other frequencies here in town, as well as stations in Peoria, Ill.; Tulsa, Okla.; and Kansas City, Mo.

“We’ve been working hard to tailor this station for the Austin market, and I can’t wait to bring the rock back to Austin,” Chase said.

The Border Media-owned station has also picked up “The Tom Kent Show,” airing it weeknights from 7 p.m. to midnight.

Scott Shannon, whose True Oldies Channel programming has been featured on the frequency since it debuted two years ago, can still be heard from midnight to 6 a.m.

“We’re excited to have a locally programmed classic hits station to fill the void that Austin has had for years,” said program director Jeff Wolf. “We want to make it easier for people to find the music they know and love.”

Comings, goings at KUT-FM

A pair of familiar voices will no longer be heard on KUT-FM.

me.jpg
Nathan Bernier

“Morning Edition” producer and backup host Crystal Chavez, a five-year veteran, headed to San Antonio earlier this month to serve as “Morning Edition” host for Texas Public Radio.

Ian Crawford, the station’s news editor, has also departed, bound for Washington, D.C. He’ll serve as a community engagement project coordinator for AmeriCorps VISTA, a program designed to combat poverty.

“This was an opportunity to get out of the newsroom and to face the challenge of day-to-day service to the community that I’ve reported on for so many years,” Crawford said.

More KUT changes to pass along: Nathan Bernier, who has been focusing on the NPR affiliate’s website, is set to return to on-air reporting. He’ll be replaced by Wells Dunbar, who arrives from the Austin Chronicle.

Got all that? Good.

KUT's John Aielli thanks listeners for their support

“My name is John Aielli and I’m still alive … and kicking.”

That’s the popular 90.5 KUT-FM host’s message to listeners in a newly released video produced by the city’s NPR station.

Aielli, 65, suffered a heart attack Jan. 4 and was off the air nearly two weeks while he recuperated at an area hospital.

He returned to work Monday, helming “Eklektikos,” which runs from 9 a.m. to noon weekdays.

New KVET morning show debuts Monday

Two well-known Austin radio personalities have been tapped to host 98.1 KVET-FM’s morning show.

anne.JPG

Starting Monday, Anne Hudson, who works evenings at sister station KASE 101, will team up with “The Roadhouse” host Chris Mosser weekdays from 5 to 10 a.m.

They replace longtime KVET-FM host Bob Cole, who departed the station last month after 20 years on the air.

“Both Chris and Anne have been a part of KVET for many years and will bring a fresh, positive outlook while respecting the legacy of an iconic Austin radio station,” the station said in its announcement.

In addition to his new duties, Mosser will continue to helm — temporarily — “The Roadhouse,” which is heard 7 p.m. to midnight Monday through Thursday, and 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

A new host should be named soon, a station spokesman told the American-Statesman.

The search is also on for a new evening deejay to replace Hudson on KASE 101.

Ratings for KISS-FM continue to go higher and higher

The latest numbers are in, and 96.7 KISS-FM continues to stomp the competition in Austin’s ratings race.

adam.JPG
Maroon 5’s Adam Levine

In fact, the home of Flo Rida, Lady Gaga and Maroon 5 has — yet again — widened its lead.

Further down the list, all Christmas, all the time paid off for Majic 95.5, helping it jump seven spots, going from 10th place in November to third place in December.

The news wasn’t as good for KASE 101, which tumbled from third place to sixth place — it’s worst showing in months.

Also worth noting: Newly launched Comedy 102.7 has wasted little time grabbing a sizable audience. In 15th place, it topped several established frequencies.

Average quarter-hour ratings as of Dec. 7, courtesy of Radio-Info.com (numbers in parentheses indicate rank as of Nov. 9):

  • 1.) 96.7 KHFI-FM (1)

  • 2.) 590 KLBJ-AM (2)

Border Media hires new director of sales

Border Media has tapped a veteran Austin broadcaster to serve as director of sales for its Austin radio stations.

oldies.jpg

John Hiatt, who previously worked for CBS Radio and Hiatt Marketing Group, will head up sales efforts at Border’s five Austin stations: 98.9 FM Austin’s Greatest Hits, 104.9 FM and 1260 AM the Horn, and 92.5 FM and 1530 AM ESPN Deportes.

He arrives from San Angelo, where he oversaw stations owned by 4R Broadcasting.

“We are thrilled to be able to attract a broadcaster with the experience and reputation that John brings,” said Bob Proud, Border’s senior vice president and market manager. “To so substantially upgrade our director of sales position speaks volumes about Border’s commitment to the Austin market.”

“I feel incredibly blessed to be given the opportunity to come home to Austin,” Hiatt said, “and getting to work for Bob Proud just makes a good thing even better. Bob has assembled a strong team — many of whom I already know and have worked with in the past. We’re going to have fun growing these stations and I can hardly wait to get there.”

Bob Cole gone from KVET

Update: Here’s my story from Friday’s American-Statesman.

Earlier: One of Austin’s best-known radio personalities is gone from the city’s airwaves.

cole.JPG

Management at Clear Channel-owned KVET-FM confirmed this afternoon that longtime morning host Bob Cole is no longer with the station.

Pam McKay, market manager for Clear Channel’s Austin and San Antonio stations, provided the American-Statesman with this statement: “Bob Cole recently made the decision to leave KVET. We appreciate his service and dedication, and wish him the best of luck in the future.”

So what can listeners expect to hear during their drive to work? There aren’t a whole lot of details just yet.

“We have not made any specific decisions yet but will continue with the momentum of the morning show as it currently stands,” McKay said.

Cole’s exit is the latest in a flurry of changes at KVET-FM in the past year.

Chit-chat was minimized in favor of a music-intensive format. Weather updates from KEYE chief meteorologist Troy Kimmel were dropped. Former co-host Bucky Godbolt was shipped back to sister station KVET-AM. Listeners helped select a new sidekick, Jamie Ivey, who left a few months later to be a stay-at-home mom. Yet another co-host, Chris Bender, signed on in April. And local traffic reports now come from a Clear Channel hub in Dallas.

“The departure of Bob Cole brings to an end an era at KVET-FM,” said Tom Allen, former host of the station’s “Country Gold” program.

“I enjoyed a nearly 25-year relationship working with Bob Cole, and I can honestly say I have never known a more professional radio personality in my nearly 50-year career. When it came to knowing the community, Bob was the connected air personality in Austin. And, as a spokesman for a commercial client, Bob is unsurpassed in his ability to sell a product or service.

“The radio business will miss him, but I’ll bet that he won’t miss the radio business, given its current sorry state of affairs. Best of luck, Bob.”

November radio ratings have arrived!

Yes, KISS-FM is still the area’s No. 1 radio station.

The pop-friendly broadcaster sits atop Arbitron’s latest Austin ratings report — its home for most of 2011.

The rest of the list features the usual suspects: Newsradio 590 AM is No. 2 again. Twangy KASE 101 and anything-goes 103.5 BOB-FM continue to fare well, too.

Scan a little further down, and you’ll see NPR affiliate KUT rebounded from an October dip that bumped it out of the Top 10. In November, it was ranked eighth, up from 12th.

Bobby Bones, Andy Roddick team up for new radio show

Two Austin favorites are teaming up for a new nationally syndicated radio show.

andy.jpg

Starting Jan. 7, KISS-FM morning host Bobby Bones and tennis ace Andy Roddick will talk all things entertainment, pop culture and sports each Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. on Fox Sports Radio.

“I can’t wait to get paid to talk about sports, especially since Andy and I have been doing it for free for years,” Bones said. “We’re pretty excited to get to use real microphones — and be heard by a real audience — on Fox Sports Radio.”

Fox promises the show, which will originate here in Austin, will “blow the minds of the sports talk radio audience.”

“Hosting a radio program is something I’ve always wanted to do, and to have this opportunity with my close friend Bobby is truly amazing,” Roddick said. “We can’t wait to get started.”

The show has already been picked up in several major cities coast to coast, including Houston, Los Angeles and San Antonio. Here in Central Texas, it will air on Clear Channel-owned AM 1300 the Zone.

Old-time radio takes center stage in Salado theater's holiday show

WSPR is a radio station in need of a Christmas miracle.

Milligan-Blackman-Esch at Christmas Show.jpg

Without a little help from listeners, it might not make it through the holiday season.

Will the small-town broadcaster live to see another year? Catch “Christmas is on the Air” at the Salado Silver Spur Theater to find out.

“Since 2006, we’ve been doing our holiday show as if it were a live broadcast,” said Grainger Esch, the theater’s executive director. “Radio’s so much fun.”

“The Silver Spur is different,” said Melodee Lenz, one of the show’s cast members. “It is one of the few professional theater companies in the U.S. that does this type of production. This show specifically, in my humble opinion, is going to be a riot.”

KUT gearing up for move to new, state-of-the-art studios

It’s the difference between night and day.

slideshow_1002292596_rgz_kut_studio_11.jpg

Staffers at 90.5 KUT-FM, Austin’s NPR affiliate, will soon move from cramped, windowless studios to new, state-of the-art, bright and airy facilities just across the street.

The station, shoehorned into various spaces on two floors in Building B of the Jesse H. Jones Communication Center at Dean Keeton and Guadalupe streets on the University of Texas campus, is the anchor tenant in the new $50 million, 120,000-square-foot Belo Center for New Media, set to open in June.

“We’ve run out of space,” said David Brown, host and executive producer of KUT’s “Texas Music Matters” program. “A lot of times you have to push someone out of a studio to get your work done.

“We’re in a submarine. It’s claustrophobic. It’s crazy.”

Building B, which opened in 1974, wasn’t designed to house a radio station, said Hawk Mendenhall, the NPR affiliate’s assistant general manager, and employees have had to get a bit creative as KUT has grown and technology has changed over the years.

KUT falls out of Austin radio's Top 10

KUT, Austin’s NPR affiliate, continued its fall down the Arbitron ratings chart in October, tumbling out of the Top 10.

The station came in 12th, the lowest it has ranked in recent memory.

That dramatic drop opened the door for 104.3 La Que Buena, which snuck its way — just barely — into the Top 10.

The news was much better for Border Media’s 98.9 FM Austin’s Greatest Hits, which continues to see its ratings grow. In October, the oldies station topped Spirit 105.9 and KGSR.

Average quarter-hour ratings as of Oct. 12, courtesy of Radio-Info.com (numbers in parentheses indicate rank as of Sept. 14):

  • 1.) 96.7 KHFI-FM (1)

  • 2.) 590 KLBJ-AM (4)

  • 3.) 103.5 KBPA-FM (2)

  • 4.) 100.7 KASE-FM (3)

  • 5.) 102.3 KPEZ-FM (5)

  • 6.) 107.1 KLZT-FM (6)

  • 7.) 95.5 KKMJ-FM (9)

  • 8.) 98.1 KVET-FM (7)

KLBJ-FM shuffles on-air lineup

KLBJ-FM is shuffling its deejay lineup.

bdoe.jpg
B-Doe

The moves are a result of this summer’s cancellation of the “Charlie Hodge Rock ‘n’ Roll Halftime Show” featuring Charlie Hodge and Matt Sadler.

B-Doe, an eight-year veteran of Emmis-owned KLBJ-FM, can now be heard from 3 to 7 p.m. and CJ, who has spent the past four years at the station, inherits the 7 p.m. to midnight shift.

“The talent pool for these positions was outstanding,” said Chase Rupe, vice president of programming and operations for Emmis. “We had an incredible group of internal and external candidates. At the end of the day, we are very fortunate to have these two tremendous talents in the building, and we are thrilled to be able to give them this opportunity.”

Stuck in Austin traffic?

comedy.jpg

You can either laugh or cry.

The folks at Emmis Communications hope you’ll choose the former and tune to Comedy Radio 102.7 FM, which debuted Thursday.

A simulcast of co-owned 93.3 KGSR-FM previously occupied that frequency.

The station is part of the 24/7 Comedy Radio Network and will air two- to three-minute bits from a mix of local and national comics.

Clear Channel radio stations team up for anti-bullying campaign

Words can hurt.

bobby.jpg
KISS’s Bobby Bones

That’s why Clear Channel’s Austin-area radio stations have launched a full-on assault on bullying.

It’s been the topic of discussion on each station’s morning show and, combined, the five AM and FM frequencies have committed to air more than 3,000 public service announcements featuring students and their parents.

“The reaction has been very positive,” said Pam McKay, who oversees Clear Channel’s stations in Austin and San Antonio. “We have had some parents admit to their children that they were bullied, and students have admitted that they were bullies.”

The idea for the campaign came from a community advisory board the broadcaster assembled about a year ago.

KUT picks up Murrow awards

KUT staffers were in New York this week to pick up a pair of national Edward R. Murrow awards — the first in the station’s history.

“Doctors on Healthcare,” a story from senior reporter Nathan Bernier, won in the audio reporting: hard news category. “NASA: End of the Space Shuttle,” produced by news director Emily Donahue and reported by Bernier, Mose Buchele, Matt Largey, Ben Philpott and Jennifer Stayton, took top honors in the audio news series competition.

Both entries advanced to the national journalism competition after winning at the regional level.

Current TV’s Keith Olbermann presented the Murrow to Bernier, and Bob Simon from “60 Minutes” handed the station’s other Murrow to Donahue.

“These two stories not only inform, but listening to them reminds us of the incredible power of the human voice to connect, engage and inspire,” said KUT general manager Stewart Vanderwilt. “KUT reporters and producers continually seek out the voices of Texas to tell our region’s story. These two National Murrow awards recognize the exceptional day-to-day work of the KUT news organization.”

KUT has won 26 regional Murrow awards since its news operation was established in 2002.

KUT membership drive brings in more than $900,000

KUT 90.5 FM wrapped up its fall membership drive today, bringing in more than $900,000 to help fund the NPR affiliate’s operations.

More than 6,000 individuals and businesses made contributions to the station, according to a spokeswoman, and more than 250 people volunteered their time to take phone calls from listeners during the week-long drive.

About 87 percent of KUT’s budget comes from community contributions, helping to pay costs associated with the station’s news broadcasts and other programming.

“We are grateful that thousands of listeners — from Central Texas and beyond — choose to financially support the fact-based reporting, thoughtful analysis, music and cultural programming KUT provides,” Stewart Vanderwilt, KUT’s director and general manager, said.

Radio/TV notebook: Wildfire tidbits

Lotsa stuff to pass along about wildfire coverage and benefits put together by local radio and TV stations.

fire.JPG

So, here ya go:

  • KVUE has teamed up with Randalls to provide assistance to fire victims in need. Cash donations can be made at any register.

  • The six Austin-area Emmis radio stations teamed up Wednesday to collect cash for fire victims, raising $25,314, as well as three truckloads of much-needed supplies for Catholic Diocese Charities of Central Texas.

The day before, fans of the “Dudley and Bob Show” on 93.7 KLBJ-FM collected a truckload of items for Austin Christian Fellowship, which is assisting Steiner Ranch residents.

In Central Texas, Emmis owns 93.3/102.7 KGSR-FM, 93.7 KLBJ-FM, 101X, 103.5 BOB-FM, 107.1 La Z and Newsradio 590, which is also simulcast on 99.7 FM.

  • Fox 7 has teamed with Clear Channel’s 5 Austin radio stations to collect items for the Capital Area Food Bank. Bring donations to any Austin-area Sonic location. Most-desired: beverages, ready-to-eat canned meals, single-serving snacks, diapers and baby formula.

Clear Channel operates 96.7 KISS-FM, 98.1 KVET-FM, KASE 101, 102.3 the Beat and 1300 AM the Zone.

  • Speaking of Fox 7, the station scored huge ratings with its wildfire coverage last week.

Monday, a station spokeswoman says “Good Day Austin” more than doubled the audience for “Good Morning America” and delivered numbers that were more than 50 percent higher than the “Today” show from 7 to 9 a.m.

From 9 to 10 a.m., “Good Day Austin” drew more eyeballs than KEYE, KVUE and KXAN combined, according to the spokeswoman.

Tuesday, Fox 7 reports the 7 to 9 a.m. portion of “Good Day Austin” beat “Today,” “Good Morning America” and the “Early Show.”

And for the 9 a.m. hour, “Good Day Austin” more than doubled the numbers for “Today.”

Its 9 p.m. news hour on Tuesday was No. 1 in its timeslot, as well.

Finally, on Wednesday, the 9 p.m. Fox 7 newscast was No. 1 and beat every primetime show that night except for “America’s Got Talent” on KXAN.

  • Time Warner Cable’s YNN is being aired in San Antonio for the next three weeks at the request of viewers there. Alamo City residents with set-top boxes can see news broadcasts 24 hours a day on Channel 90.

The broadcaster, which operates in 23 cities across the nation, has been using that frequency to simulcast Talk Radio 1370 AM since earlier this year.

“Eighty-six percent of all radio listening in Austin occurs on the FM dial,” said Alan Kirshbom, vice president and market manager for Entercom. “Entercom is investing heavily in 96.3 to make KJCE bigger, better and more successful.”

Kirshbom declined to reveal the seller and purchase price.

Charlie Hodge, Matt Sadler gone from KLBJ-FM

More music, less talk.

hodge.jpg

That’s what research shows listeners want middays on 93.7 KLBJ-FM, so the station has dumped the “Charlie Hodge Rock ‘n’ Roll Halftime Show” featuring Charlie Hodge and Matt Sadler. The show aired weekdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“Charlie and Matt are both incredibly talented individuals and we wish them the absolute best in their future endeavors,” said Scott Gillmore, market manager for Emmis Communications, the station’s owner. “Unfortunately, the ‘Halftime Show’ never did what we needed in the ratings to be truly successful and, although Charlie has many fans, there is no station playing all the great rock music that is part of KLBJ-FM’s heritage during the workday.”

sadler.jpg

After getting the news, Hodge and Sadler both took to Facebook to say farewell to listeners.

“I want to thank you for believing in us,” Sadler said. “It stinks that it didn’t work out.”

“Thank you to all the fans and foes that have listened over the years and thank you to all the clients that put their faith in me,” Hodge said.

Cactus Pryor, Austin radio and TV pioneer, dead at 88

Cactus Pryor, Austin’s original funnyman who pioneered local radio and television, died Tuesday afternoon.

He was 88.

cactus.JPG

The cause was complications from a recent fall and Alzheimer’s disease. He fell and broke his leg earlier this month while living at an assisted living facility in Buda.

With family around him, Pryor died at Hospice Austin’s Christopher House, where he was moved recently.

When Austin got its first local TV broadcast on KTBC in 1951, the folksy humorist was the first face that viewers saw. Until 2008, he did commentaries on KLBJ radio about old Austin haunts and personalities.

Lately, the station has reaired his old commentaries, a tribute to his lasting popularity and connection to listeners.

“The funniest person ever in Austin,” said former radio colleague Dale Dudley of KLBJ-FM.

He was everything to everyone, it seems. He emceed President Lyndon Johnson’s parties for world leaders at the LBJ Ranch. He had small parts in two John Wayne movies, “The Hell Fighters” and “The Green Berets.” He escorted stars like Raquel Welch, Lucille Ball and Dean Martin on promotional tours. His wit made him an in-demand after-dinner speaker and roaster of politicians and entertainers.

He used disguises. In 1971, he appeared as Count Krag Jansen at a gala at the new Highland Mall. The American-Statesman photographed and identified him as a dignitary from Denmark. The next day, the newspaper had to note that Pryor had duped everyone again.

One of Pryor’s last gifts to his beloved Austin was his 2007 announcement to his listeners on KLBJ that he had Alzheimer’s disease, in which he encouraged others with the disease to keep “living and laughing.”

Keeping true to himself, Pryor joked about the disease in an interview with the American-Statesman:

“My doctor has told me that I will be losing my memory because of a certain disease. I don’t buy that,” Pryor said at the time, “ There will come a time I won’t even recognize my own family. No way. Me forgetting the name of my wife, ah, Jewell, ah, Peggy, or was it Harriet? No, that’s my sister who lives in Santa Monica, no, San Antonio.”

KUT breaks in new studios

brightlight.jpg

KUT’s new digs are still a loooooooong way from completion, but that didn’t stop the city’s NPR affiliate from hosting a concert this week in Studio 1A.

Local band Bright Light Social Hour performed Tuesday for about 100 construction workers, as well as folks affiliated with KUT and the University of Texas.

“Bright Light Social Hour gave an amazing, high-energy performance,” said station spokeswoman Erin Geisler. “They played four songs to a diverse crowd, and were so enthusiastic and gracious.”

Located at the corner of Dean Keeton and Guadalupe streets, the KUT Public Broadcast Center is expected to open next summer.

Catch 'Jeff Ward at the Movies 7' this Friday

Newsradio 590 host Jeff Ward hits Alamo Drafthouse this Friday for his annual “Jeff Ward at the Movies” broadcast — and you’re invited.

But only if you’re able to score one of the highly coveted tickets.

Last year, passes ended up on Craigslist, selling for as much as $300, according to producer Thomas McDonald.

Ward will broadcast his show live from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Anderson Lane Alamo location.

As in past years, the lucky few who attend the event will be treated to film trailers, but McDonald says the focus this time around will be on “original content based on past callers, interviews, news stories and ‘trademarks’ that make the show memorable.”

And, yes, there will be swag bags, too. Of course.

More details here.

New music director signs on at KGSR

There’s someone new picking the tunes you hear on 93.3/102.7 KGSR-FM.

Kristen Kurtis, a recent arrival from Spokane, Wash., has signed on as the station’s music director. You can also hear her on air weekdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

kurtis.jpg

Kurtis replaces Mark Abuzzahab, who took a gig in Dallas earlier this year.

“KGSR has a great reputation,” she said. “I’ve known it was a really cool station for years. When I heard about the opening there, I got really excited.”

“She’s a tremendous talent and I’m fortunate to have found her,” said KGSR program director Chris Edge. “Not only will Kristen be sharing her perspectives on all the music we play on KGSR, but you’ll also get a good dose of who she is as a person. The world today — through social media — is about sharing who you are and what you stand for, and Kristen will deliver on that.”

One of Kurtis’ first priorities is increasing the size of the station’s music library.

“It’s really hard to explain how we pick new songs,” she said. “A lot of it is gut.”

KGSR typically tests out new music between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m., Kurtis said. Listener feedback and data on audience retention rates help decide what stays and what goes.

“We’re making sure the choices are well-rounded,” she said. “It’s very apparent to me that there’s a lot of heritage here and I want to make sure we continue to expose our listeners to that.”

Big Talker's Sean Rima to broadcast online

Talk radio host Sean Rima’s absence from Austin’s airwaves won’t last long.

Rima, who helmed the morning show on 98.9 FM the Big Talker, was one of several local and syndicated hosts left without a home after owner Border Media blew up the station Monday, citing low ratings.

Border announced this afternoon it will launch austinstalkin.com, an Internet-only radio station, on Wednesday, Sept. 7. The site isn’t live just yet.

Rima can be heard from 5 to 8 a.m., with a rebroadcast scheduled for midnight to 3 a.m, according to a station spokesman. He’ll also get some airtime on sister station KTSA 550 AM in San Antonio.

Other hosts from KTSA from may pop up, as well, but the bulk of each day’s schedule will be filled with paid programming.

The spokesman said syndicated shows heard on the Big Talker, including Glenn Beck and Jason Lewis, won’t be streamed because they can be found elsewhere on the web.

Border Media pulled the plug yesterday on 98.9 the Big Talker, the talk radio host’s Austin home for the past two years.

Fans aren’t out of luck, though.

Beck can be heard weekdays from 9 to 11 a.m. on 1200 WOAI-AM.

The San Antonio station comes in loud and clear across most of Central Texas.

They also stream online at radio.woai.com.

As for the Big Talker’s other syndicated programming, there’s no word yet on new homes for Andy Dean, Dave Ramsey and others.

If we hear anything, you’ll be the first to know. We promise.

Wendy Williams, Bobby Bones feud on air

Update: Some kind soul has posted audio from the show. Check it out before it gets yanked.

Earlier: “You’ll never be Wendy Williams.”

bones.jpg

That’s what the TV talk show host told 96.7 KISS-FM’s Bobby Bones during a rather heated on-air exchange this morning.

Williams was promoting her appearance this afternoon at Lakeline Mall for the Fox 7 Austin Idol competition, but the interview quickly veered off course when Bones asked about some high-profile controversies during her days as a New York City deejay, including one incident where she claimed several well-known rappers were gay.

The daytime diva — publicist in tow — made it abundantly clear she didn’t want to discuss her past, but Bones pushed on. Things, as you might imagine, quickly turned ugly.

We’d link to the audio, but it’s not yet posted on the KISS-FM website.

Williams also popped up on sister station 102.3 the Beat, where she chatted with morning host Zannie Kaye.

Things went much better there, with Kaye posting this on Facebook: “Wendy Williams is def an original. And a REAL sweetheart!”

“The Wendy Williams Show” airs weekdays at 11 a.m. on Fox 7.

2 local radio traffic reporters laid off; updates now coming from Dallas

Two of Clear Channel Radio’s Austin-based traffic reporters have been let go and another has been reassigned as part of a corporate reorganization.

Traffic reporter Don Miller and producer/fill-in reporter Kevin McAdams were cut loose, and their duties shifted to the broadcast giant’s Dallas hub.

Anne Hudson, who also provided traffic updates for the five local Clear Channel stations, was moved to the night shift on country station KASE 101. She can be heard weeknights from 7 p.m. to midnight.

“I really don’t have any negative feelings about it,” McAdams told the American-Statesman.

McAdams, who worked for Clear Channel for eight years, says he’ll turn his attention to kmacsports.com, his online sports broadcasting site.

“Right now, I’m focusing 100 percent on my company,” he said.

Traffic reporters in other cities have also been cut, according to published reports, including Los Angeles.

“As a company we are always evaluating our strategy, our workload, and the corporate environment to ensure we’re properly staffed and operating as efficiently as possible, and these changes in traffic are part of that ongoing strategy,” said Wendy Goldberg, a spokeswoman for San Antonio-based Clear Channel. “The hubs allow us to keep local assets to gather information, while utilizing our highly skilled talent across multiple markets.”

Workers in Dallas are using a mix of public and private data to remotely monitor Austin-area traffic, Goldberg said, tracking crashes, freeway speeds and road closures.

The company’s Austin stations are 96.7 KHFI-FM, 98.1 KVET-FM, 100.7 KASE-FM, 102.3 KPEZ-FM and 1300 KVET-AM.

New show debuts tonight on 98.9 the Big Talker

One Red Bull energy drink just isn’t enough for Andy Dean.

AndyDean-HS-col-hi-res.jpg

No, the talk radio host needs four or five — maybe even six — to get through the day.

But he’s trying to cut back. Really, he is.

Dean, whose nationally syndicated “America Now” program debuts tonight at 8, brings a unique point of view — and a tremendous amount of energy — to Austin’s 98.9 the Big Talker.

The hyperkinetic host says he’s excited to be on the air in Central Texas, and expects he’ll have no problem picking up listeners here who are “young, independent thinkers.”

“The people in Austin are very weird and strange, and that’s my demo,” he said. “I hope they like me, because I don’t want to get a new job.”

“We decided to pick up Andy’s show because he seems — and our hopes are — that he is different,” said Jeff Wolf, the Big Talker’s operations manager. “Andy is younger than your typical talk radio show host. He’s informed, witty, and kind of a jerk … but in a good way.”

Dean enters syndication after a stint at Atlanta’s WSB-AM. He’s also filled in for Neal Boortz, a radio host heard coast to coast.

He’s best known, though, for his appearance on “The Apprentice.” Dean was fired by Donald Trump on national TV, but later ended up working for Trump personally.

“He’s actually a very hands-on manager,” Dean said. “If you’ve got a problem, he wants to hear about it.”

“America Now’s” discussion topics each day will vary, including everything from politics to entertainment. The 30-year-old host leans conservative, and isn’t afraid to admit it. But he thinks liberals will tune in, too.

“At first it may be painful, but in the end the entertainment value of the show is going to be such that it will draw liberals,” Dean said. “I have the intellectual horsepower to pull this off.”
