Fred Cantu returns to KEYE for fill-in work

Avuncular Austin newscaster Fred Cantu is back at KEYE, filling in on the station’s morning show.

Cantu, who has at different times anchored the CBS affiliate’s morning, evening and Telemundo newscasts, departed KEYE late last year.

This time around, he has been tapped to serve as fill-in host of “We Are Austin Mornings,” which runs weekdays from 5 to 7 a.m.

Anchor Erika Gonzalez, who helped launch the show this summer, has departed KEYE after lining up another job.

A tweet this morning — “Austin, I’ll miss you, but I’m moving on to the next adventure God has in store for me. Thank you for all your love and support!” — set off a flurry of questions from viewers and journalists at other Austin TV stations, but Gonzalez wouldn’t say just yet where she’ll pop up next.

Gonzalez’s job has already been posted at keyetv.com.

Also gone from KEYE: Weekend weathercaster Mark Chapin, who opted not to extend his contract.

Chapin arrived in Austin two years ago from a station in Syracuse, N.Y.

Allison Miller, a recent transplant from Phoenix, is the station’s new weekend meteorologist. Miller is already on the air, filling in for chief meteorologist Troy Kimmel this week.

The changes at KEYE are the latest in a flurry of personnel changes at Austin TV stations in recent months.

Sad to see Erika go. She had tremendous energy, always exceptionally dressed, and absolutely stunning looks. A very beautiful, professional lady.

Now that Fred is on KEYE in the mornings, I will start listening again. Please keep Fred on. He is well versed, respected in the community, and we like seeing his smiling face.

Glad to see Fred back. Will watch the morning KEYE news as long as he is anchoring. But KEYE can send the new weather person back to where she came from - all she does is read the temperatures.

Keep Fred on the morning -

I will stop recording We Are Austin Mornings on my DVR. Erika is a beautiful soul. Too bad we have to go back to watching robots.

Let this be a lesson to KEYE's management. We stopped watching the morning show when Erkia started as host. We're sure she's a nice person, but Erika had too much energy. At times she spoke so fast my wife and I would just look at each other and roll our eyes.

It's nice to see someone like Fred Cantu -- mature, respected, well spoken and measured -- on the air in the mornings.

Please don't let Fred go (again).

Fred, we have missed you so much on the air! Welcome back. I'm glad that KEYE can turn to a seasoned, intelligent and humorous on air talent.

We'll be really upset if they let Fred go one more time.

I like Fred but I enjoyed waking up to Erika's energy. Well back to KXAN for me in the morning.

Nice move by Erika Gonzales. Get while the getting is good. If KEYE weren't a TV station, it would be a guillotine.
