UT vs. Rice WILL NOT be on pay-per-view

Don’t believe the rumors swirling this afternoon online and on local sports radio stations.

docs.JPG

Within the past few minutes, I’ve confirmed with ESPN, Time Warner Cable and the University of Texas that Saturday’s UT vs. Rice game WILL NOT be offered on pay-per-view.

UT’s athletics department released this statement just a short time ago:

“We absolutely understand our fans’ sentiments, and they are important. This LHN is a new world, but it will not be successful without time, negotiation and patience.

“ESPN has made a tremendous commitment to UT with this LHN, and the carriers must receive ‘clamor’ from their customers. When additional programming is announced this week, next week, the week after, the flesh-out of what viewers will be missing without carriage will become apparent. Like the Big 10 Network and the YES network, this is quality programming and it takes time to clear.

“LHN has the rights to this Rice-Texas game, and there can be no backdoor clearances for the game. Carriage must come as the result of signed contracts between ESPN and the carriers.

“As an ESPN-owned and operated network, ESPN will be responsible for clearances, and the company’s affiliate relations executives are working feverishly to get these deals consummated. We may yet have another carriage announcement prior to the Rice game.

“Unfortunately, Comcast and TWC are not in agreement form right now. Neither satellite operator — DirecTV or Dish — has committed yet either, but again, all of these negotiations will happen.

“We ask that you continue to understand the process and help make LHN a success.

“The rate LHN is asking of the carriers is one that will ensure the broadest distribution possible.

“We appreciate your loyalty and passion for UT, and definitely understand the angst.”

To see a Longhorn football game you need to buy 3 magic keys. One for regular cable with ABC. One with expanded service ESPN and a 3rd one for the greedy Longhorn Network which incidently is ABC and ESPN. Why else would ABC show box scored during college football that said to contact your local provider to add the Longhorn Network to your cable service? Too bad high school recruits won't be able to see the games and hope to one day play as a Longhorn.

If the Longhorn Network gave a damn about its fans, it would have figured out a way for us to pay to see the game in the meantime.

They held this game hostage and used it as a bargaining chip. They did not and DO NOT give a damn about the fans. The fact that UT is behind all this makes me sick.

First you screwed the students over by taking their seats. Now you screw the rest of us who have had to shell out hundreds of bucks a ticket to watch these games live.

You can go eff yourself, Longhorn Network. I loved my 'Horns more than you could ever know, but you deserve to be boycotted.

Screw UT they have mess up the Big 12. Now they will have a **** network with a wimpy conference. All because they are greedy and got sucked into the ESPN battle between FOX. How stupid. UT just lost my donations. Maybe UT needs to act like the quality football team it used to be and get back to playing real teams. Yes UT fans we are sure to win the conference of losers then get our *** kicked when we play real teams. What shame.

Typical... I have not been a football fan in the past - just started watching the Cowboys and the Horns (because I live in the Austin area). This is what America has become - greed!!! If I can't watch the first game, I won't be watching any! See ya, UT... Have fun w/ all of the money - you can do it w/o me.

I agree that this seems to be all about the money.. I can't believe UT has gone this route and allowed this to happen. What a dirty rotten shame. I'm very disappointed with UT and don't think I'm willing to pay anything more even if and when a deal is worked out with Dish..

I guess as long at UT fans are willing to shell out the money to fill stadiums, box seats, parking, endowment funds, and TV ratings we will have to continue to bend over to the money machine. UT has never cared about fans or students, only money making. What a terrible way to run a business.

typical UT crap! I saw my 1st live UT game from the "knot hole" section in the North End Zone of Memorial Stadium, where every AISD student could get in for $0.50! I REFUSE to put more $$$$ in the pockets of one of the wealthiest schools on the planet! Big time Professional College Football has taken over. I guess we will have to start going to watch minor league games like Westlake or Lake Travis.

Seriously, what's up with all the negativity? Does it make you feel better to spout all this hot air? That is what is it is after all. You moan and complain on some forum and the second they get a game on air, you're going to forget all about this and get lulled into living with the LHN. Meanwhile, DeLoss won't loose any sleep cause he's not reading this forum and he and the leadership at the university will continue to capitalize on your loyalty.

GO HORN!!!

Why don't all of your whiners take it elsewhere. I'm sick of al the whining already from obvious Texas Haters. Get on your ATM board and complain over there. The same type vitriol comes from the local Democrats, if it really meant something to you, you could always go purchase a couple of tickets your self and watch it in person.

Why not make all of the games free? Forget pay-per-view. You guys are on the wrong path. There will be an underground "anti-Longhorn network" that will grow exponentially. It will affect the athletic program at UT.

You are forwarned.

Do the right thing ESPN and UT...put the game online or on pay per view so that fans can see the game. Don't punish fans and alumni because of your greed. Stop using us to do your bidding for you.

You know what UT? F&&U&&C&&K you all! I'm a UT-ex who love(d) my Longhorns football but you're screwing us, the ex's and the fans, over big time with your greed. DeLoss, go jump in a lake. Don't act like you care about the University or it's fan base..you do not. You are a self-serving, greedy, detestable example of what's wrong with society. Money first. I am no longer interested in watching things UT. I am also not renewing my UT-Ex Membership..thank DeLoss for that!

Oh, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, YES! I want the Mack Brown Network, I do, I do, I do, I do, I DO!!!!! I will sell my blood, take a third job, hawk my
Vince Young autographed #10 jersey, go down on GD... ANYTHING to see my beloved Coach Mack Brown and his new channel. It is truly a blessed and wonderful world in which we live. In Thy Macker's Holy Name We Pray... Amen.

NOW do you see why Texas A&M didn't want any part of this? As bad as UT looks...ESPN paid $300 million for this. LOL! Who thought it made financial sense to air 24/7 UT volleyball, swimming, track & field, etc. nationally?? This is why TWC, Comcast, DirecTV, and Dish Network aren't in a hurry to sign. They're waiting for the bugs to get worked out and basketball season.

I sent an email to Dodds email at UT and told him that i was disappointed that loyal Texas fans locally and across the country and being treated so poorly and that the LHN was the wrong decision and although i am a fan for life, I am so disappointed by all of this and his office because i cant say for sure it was actually him that responded sent one of the biggest bs statements. He actually had the nerve to say to me thanks for my input but the LHN is for the athletes and their families and that in time would hope that I can understand that. What bs. ESPN pays 300 million dollars to them so that this station can be enjoyed by this group. If i get enough requests, i will post the actual email that he sent.

Newsflash for UT and ESPN: Time Warner still doesn't get the NFL Network. If they won't cave to the NFL, they're sure not going to cave to you.

This is the biggest clusterfk around. No one gives a %$#@ about the LHN for football games. Those were always available. The LHN was for baseball and basketball games. Now, we can't even see the first game of the year. Looks like A&M, Colorado, and Nebraska are right about the Longhorns being greedy and not caring about anything but the money. I am sooooo fed up with this BS.

By MeJustMe

September 2, 2011 5:27 PM | Link to this

This is terrible. I can't believe Deloss sold us out with this new network. Unbelievable that I can't watch the Longhorns beat Rice! This is rather unprecedented. We're on TV all the time, but we usually have someone who can actually watch. What in the world were we thinking with this LHN deal? We'll get two games? Really? Then, Olympic sports after that. That's not worth the paper it's printed on. In a different arrangement, we'd be on a "normal" channel everyone could actually watch.

By d s

September 2, 2011 5:24 PM | Link to this

Is this how they justify adding more seats at the stadium, fail to sell out, and need to extort money from the fan that likes his/her sports in a setting where you can 'see' the game 'sitting down' with just friends and family, and not deal with traffic. I truly hope everyone boycotts UT football for one year and see if they get the message. I doubt it will happen, but I can wish.

By WTFUT

September 2, 2011 5:24 PM | Link to this

IF they wanna screw people like this the people should boycott the whole season that way they know who makes them the moneyand to stop screwing around and get their sh!t right. Its not TWC or cable co. this time being greedy its UT and ESPN. UT has Let its fans down bigtime by starting LHN in the first place

By plubius

Call off the LHN, rename it the BIG XII Network, share the revenue and ask TAMU to stay.

I love my Horns, but I will never pay to watch reruns. Sorry. Can't wait to see TCU and Baylor tonight, BYU and Mississippi tomorrow, which I will watch without any extra pay for the Fail to Launch Network (AKA LHN).

By John Adams

September 2, 2011 5:22 PM | Link to this

The only thing fans should be clamoring for is DeLoss Dodds' head on a platter. Tehy're trying to turn a few football games a year into hundreds of millions in additional revenue. With the team and the economy in decline, this is a losing proposition.

By UTW

September 2, 2011 5:17 PM | Link to this

This is complete crap!!!! They want us to call the cable companies???? I hate dealing with TWC as it is and now you want me to call and beg. The LHN hasn't even started but its not off to a good start!

By Tired

September 2, 2011 5:17 PM | Link to this

I'm tired of people misplacing the blame. DeLoss has little or no input on this situation...it's between ESPN (the owners of the content) and the cable/satellite providers (the bridge to the consumer).

It sucks that both ESPN and the providers have let this go on for so long, and it makes them look like Congress. But let's blame the right people, and hope that we can enjoy LHN soon!

By Keith

September 2, 2011 5:05 PM | Link to this

Fans be patient!!? There never should have been an agreement made until everything was in order. Now the fans and the university will suffer - all because of rights and money. This is just another institution's leaders letting the public down due to greed and poor management - it's plain shameful. Who wants to watch volleyball reruns from 1995 three times a day anyway!? I mean they're only offering 2 football games this year anyway; and the first one won't be seen by 95% of the public. FAILURE to launch!!

September 2, 2011 4:48 PM | Link to this

How do you follow a 5 win season?....Get arrogant and make is so your loyal hometown fans can't see the game on t.v.. Guess I have to drive to Houston and knock on a strangers door who has one of the small cable providers..promise a 12 pack and watch UT vs. Rice. I won't pay extra for cable or satellite service for this channel...and if the ESPN/UT Empire are demanding big money from them. Shame on them......Thanks for taking the fun out of college football.

This article and the LHN website do a terrible job of explaining what is going on. It is assumed that the reader knows everything about this topic, and therefore, the most basic information is missing:

The UT vs. Rice game on Sat. Sept. 3 is not scheduled to be broadcast on a number of cable and DSL networks because the network operators (carriers) have not agreed to financial terms requested by ESPN, who owns the Longhorn Network (LHN). This means that, as things stand now, the vast majority of local residents in Austin and Texas will not be able to see this game on television.

By cravin

September 2, 2011 4:46 PM | Link to this

We have a new offense, a new defense, and no one in central texas will be able to see it. WTF.

Well, I'm not too concerned about it NOW, because nobody would have aired 2 unranked and one soon-to-be-conferenceless team on anything but Lifetime network anyway.

When they start winning REAL games, MAYBE I'll contact my cable pimp.

What a joke this has become. What have we gained as fans?
Some games won't be televised - check
Forced to pay for games, assuming they can work out a contract - check
Create a cloud of controversy and negative PR - check
Distracted coaches and players - check
Makes us look like complete fools - check

Delo$$ needs to stop being all about the money and think about the fans for a change. The LHN has brought us ZERO benefit so far and nothing but negative publicity and inconvenience. Do something for the fans for a change.

Dear DeLoss: You obviously don't give a damn about Longhorn fans unless there's a $ in it for you. If I can't watch the first game of the season, then I'm not that interested in watching the rest. Fans should come first.
