Grande picks up Longhorn Network

Grande Communications has just announced it has picked up the Longhorn Network.

The channel joins the San Marcos-based cable provider’s lineup Saturday, mere hours before the University of Texas vs. Rice football game.

Grande is available in select areas of a number of Texas cities, including Austin, Corpus Christi, Dallas, Midland, San Antonio and San Marcos.

In Austin, San Antonio and San Marcos, LHN can be found on Grande channels 29 and 829; 33 and 833 in Corpus Christi, Dallas and Midland; and 25 and 825 in Waco.

“As a Texas based company, Grande understands the passion our customers have for Texas sports,” said Grande president Matt Murphy. “We are pleased and very excited to make Longhorn Network available as part of our cable television offerings.”

AT&T U-verse, DirecTV, Dish Network and Time Warner Cable have not yet reached deals with LHN.

UT, or someone, is trying to suck the blood out of their loyal supporters. UT has the absolute worst broadcast network of any major university in the US. Not only TV but their radio system as well. Someone should be fired in that department. They are really incompetent...................

To hell with the Longhorn Network. . . and for that matter, UT itself for being such a greed-based institution. As a UT-ex, I'm ashamed of the way the athletic dept. has completely dominated the scene on campus to the detriment of the scholastic departments, all of which are having to make massive cutbacks because of the economy. And despite making huge sums with the ESPN contract, the Athletic Dept. is keeping the lion's share. A sad commentary.

Grande does not serve Austin. Rumor has it that Time Warner is negotiating but say they haven't had enough interest.

My suggestion is all you TW subscribers better start calling! Same goes with all other Texas fans! CALL YOUR PROVIDER and complain! This is the only way the common folk, you know the ones who buy and wear burnt orange, yea those, will be able to watch their favorite team! There's a huge fan base in Texas that supports the Horns, and that should be reason enough to provide coverage.

Good luck today, Horns' players. Whether I'm watching or listening, I'll still be supporting! Hook'em!

There should be a bus leaving Austin, headed to San Marcos to a sports bar televising the game.
I'm figuring this was not Texas' plan to not have the first game of the year on T.V. Surely they thought this out! Tell me they did not want to piss off a huge amount of die-hard Horns fans! Tell me it ain't so, Deloss!

What a fallout in epic proportions!

Please, come on down to San Marvelous to watch the game. Make a day of it and do some shopping, tube the river, and leave your tax dollars.

What an incredibly piss poor way to treat the fans! UT is gambling on the fact that we will all run to our providers, and beg them to carry LHN, promising to pay WHATEVER it takes. Well, NO FRICKING WAY. My bill is inflated enough without another reason to bend me over and charge me more. Screw you, UT. Your let them eat cake mentality you can take and shove it up your playbook. Especially since you didn't exactly perform as a team I'd shell out another $5 for each month. How about you be grateful for the fans who stuck by you, and show them some respect instead of showing them the door.

Here...you want to expend energy on something? Talk to the man who started it...

Suddenlink says, “We’re working on it. ESPN is not providing the service yet.”
Clearly, if Suddenlink wanted the service enough, they would have worked out terms with ESPN before now. This is not new information. They obviously are trying to make a better deal than what ESPN is asking for the feed.
I would have paid a premium to get the UT/Rice broadcast. Now I don’t have the choice. I don’t get the option of another carrier to provide the service. I assure you, my loyalty to the Longhorns is far greater than my loyalty to SuddenLink. Now, along with OU Sux, I have an addition to the list. Hook ‘Em!

Good job Grande. I wish Suddenlink would follow your lead. The company line is “We’re working on it. ESPN is not providing the service yet.”

Not being on national TV may be a blessing in disguise especially if the wheels fall off the wagon during the Rice game........

TheotherLarry, I realize that I am paying for stations that I don't watch on my provider, not TWC, that does not mean that I want to have more stations taking a bite out of my wallet added to the list. Put the lhn on a paid Sports Tier and leave the rest of us who could care less about the lhn alone.

Amen Larry!! I too have NO desire to be charged for that stupid channel.

By TheotherLarry

September 2, 2011 6:08 PM | Link to this

Larry: If you have Time Warner, you're already paying for networks you don't watch. I, for example, don't watch the children's, religious, Spanish-language, or shopping networks, yet I'm paying for them anyway. The cable companies don't offer a la carte choices: the FCC has proposed that but Time Warner, et al, are fighting it to the death. This is all Time Warner's continuing greed. It's the same reason it won't carry the NFL Network.

This is crap! I still can't believe that after a 5-7 season, the Horns would schedule the first game of the season on a network that so few people can see! Thanks! We really appreciate it!

I don't care who carries the lhn, just as long as it is on a Sports Tier (paid separately) or an ala carte selection. I have absolutely no desire to be charged for a network I will never watch.
