Jacqui Saburido to be on Oprah today
Jacqui Saburido, who suffered horrific burns in a 1999 car accident on RM 2222 and has become a nationally celebrated spokeswoman against drinking and driving, will appear on the “Oprah Winfrey Show” today at 4 p.m. as the talk show host counts down her most memorable guests.
Saburido will talk about an upcoming facial reconstruction surgery, in which her skin will be grafted and shaped into a new nose, said Janet Lea, senior vice-president of Sherry Matthews Advocacy Marketing, which put together a successful TxDOT campaign featuring Saburido’s story. Saburido, a beautiful Venezuelan student studying English in Austin, suffered burns over nearly her entire body after the car she was riding in was struck by a drunk driver and burst into flames.
The Statesman chronicled Jacqui’s recovery in the 2001 special report “Chasing Hope” and then caught up with her on the 10-year anniversary of the accident.
Saburido was first a guest on the “Oprah Winfrey Show” in 2003 and was brought back again in 2005 for Winfrey’s 20th anniversary show.
On today’s show, one of the last before the iconic series comes to an end, Saburido will be one of a handful of guests as Winfrey unveils her “All-Time Favorite Guest.”

Jacqui, I am so proud of you. My God, the strength you have. I made my children read your story and follow your updates. Keep your head up. You are one in a million. Continue to do well in all you do. If ever you doubt, just remember - Someone out there learned from you.
