Crestina Chavez new YNN managing editor; Kevin Benz update

Austin’s Your News Now (formerly News 8 Austin) has announced that evening news anchor Crestina Chavez has assumed the role of managing editor at the 24-hour Time Warner Cable news outlet.

TWC says that Chavez will share oversight of day-to-day newsroom operations with News Director Michael Pearson (he replaced Kevin Benz, who parted ways with the station in December). Chavez will no longer anchor the evening newscast.

“I am so proud we were able to promote from within our group someone who has an infectiously clear vision for what YNN Austin is and what it can become,” said Pearson. “Crestina is a strong teacher with an innate sense of leadership and I look forward to working with her well into the future.”

Chavez’ bio can be read here.

Meanwhile, Benz has also landed a new gig.

“I promised to keep you updated on what I’m doing since leaving News 8 last December … so I wanted to let you know I am now the Editor-in-Chief of CultureMap Austin, a daily digital magazine we plan to launch this summer,” Benz said via email.

CultureMap, as explained on the site, is “a daily digital magazine that delivers 24/7 real-time news reporting and analysis, breaking news, compelling opinions and fresh perspectives on the arts, fashion, dining, design, real estate, travel, city life, sports, and society, as well as a curated events calendar and city guide.”

A Houston outlet for the venture has been up and running for 15 months.
