‘Friday Night Lights’ back on NBC tonight

Locally-filmed “Friday Night Lights” returns for its (almost certainly) penultimate season tonight at 7 p.m. on NBC. Here’s where we left off, way back at the end of Season 3:
Matt Saracen decided to pass on the Art Institute of Chicago and remain in Dillon to care for his grandmother. Meanwhile, Tim Riggins reluctantly headed off to college in San Antonio. Billy and Mindy told Tim they were going to have a baby. Tyra Colette was finally accepted into the University of Texas while Lyla Garrity switched gears and headed off to Vanderbilt. Coach Taylor was ousted from his position at Dillon High and took the job as head coach of the East Dillon Lions, and his wife Tami continues to grapple with the situation back at Dillon High, which potentially puts her at loggerheads with Eric.
So, will this be the season that finally brings Emmy recognition to the critically-acclaimed but little-watched show? Now that the Jay Leno prime time/late night turmoil is over, it’s probably the best drama NBC’s got going (admittedly, that’s not saying much).
But the new season — heck, it’s almost a new show with Coach Eric building a team out of a rag-tag bunch of undisciplined characters at a new school — seems to provide the perfect opportunity for new viewers (and Emmy voters) to tune in. Complex, new characters played by talented actors (Michael B. Jordan’s Vince and Angela Rawna’s Regina are standouts) take the show in uncomfortable but compelling new directions.
Speaking of uncomfortable, the plot bends and twists in some incredulous ways to keep a few fan favorites around, but that should all work itself out as the season goes on. In the mean time, regular viewers have noted that the show upped its game toward the end of last season. I’m happy to report that the trend continues tonight.
