KXAN launches ‘MyAustinTV’, sports programming

MyNetwork TV is back. The programming had shared a signal with The CW and has not had a local home since LIN-TV’s Austin NBC affiliate KXAN dropped it in favor of a 9 p.m. local newscast in mid-September (MyNetwork TV has recently dropped its network model, becoming a syndicated programming provider).

KXAN today launched “MyAustinTV,” which station President and General Manager Eric Lassberg is calling a MyNetwork TV partner station. The content will broadcast in high definition on KBVO-TV (digital channel 14), a full-power television station that formerly simulcast KXAN.

Sports fans should be happy — much of MyAustinTV’s content will cater to them.

The channel will air San Antonio Spurs NBA basketball games, Houston Texans NFL pre-season games and Big 12 college basketball games, including University of Texas Longhorn basketball games. The station will also air other UT sports programming, including “Longhorn Sports Center Weekly.” In addition, MyAustinTV has the capability to air live UT sports such as baseball, women’s basketball and softball.

MyNetwork TV’s primetime programming kicks in at 7 p.m. and includes such shows as “Law & Order: Criminal Intent,” “The Unit” and “WWE Smackdown.”

“MyAustinTV is dedicated to providing local and regional sports and entertainment programming to Central Texas,” Lassberg said. “We especially want to thank the University of Texas, the San Antonio Spurs and our other partners in the community for helping us provide viewers with their favorite local content.”

Beginning today, MyAustinTV can be seen on Time Warner Cable channel 1525 on the HD tier and on DirecTV on channel 51. Launches on Grande Communications (channel 18 and 318), Suddenlink and AT&T Uverse will happen “soon,” Lassberg says. Digital over-the-air consumers can pick up KBVO on channel 14.

I have been unhappy with the way You have treated WWE Friday Night Smackdown making it hard to stay up late to watch wrestling after ranger baseball. Other stations would have cut the rangers off at 8pm and honored WWE Start time. Or Ranger Baseball should have aired after WWE. I'm glad that WWE is moving to Sci-Fi soon. Your losing that money because You didn't treat them well.

I'm watching the first Texas basketball game broadcast versus Colorado. I'm watching on Time Warner Cable HD channel 1525, on a new 52-inch Sony LCD which provides stunning quality of most channels. It's barely watchable, truly very poor quality. Can't really see the basket, all of the text on the screen is ghosted and blurry, some not readable. This is a travesty.

We live just outside of Austin and can get all digital channels offered except for this one. Is there a plan to boost the signal sometime soon?? Would love to have access to programming. Thanks!

After the digital transition, we can only get this "MyAustinTV" which means back to back to back info-mercials...and wrestling. No sports as stated, news or weather which is what we really need). It's worthless. What's were you thinking?

Stinks, we live in McCulloch county and now
only have KLST to watch news on, sure will
miss the news and weather on KXAM. Sports
are great, but without a balance of news
I have no intention of watching. They must
have turned down the power when they switched
to KBVO, as after dark the station is unwatchable out here in S.E. McCulloch
county. DTV STINKS !

Will Spurs games that are broadcast in San Antonio on both of the channels My35-HD and KENS-HD be shown on KBVO in Austin?

I am very disappointed that 1/2 of the channels available without cable in the Lake LBJ area are now Spanish stations. I depend on the live weather map for lake conditions and now it is a Spanish station. When traveling outside of the United States I don't expect to have English television availble to me. We, as Americans, need to make the effort to speak the native language of the land, whatever that might be. Not only have you taken away our English speaking programs, a great number of the Spanish programs are an insult to our adult intelligence. Please bring back programming in our native language.

I think it's great if some viewers get the sports they wanted but we just lost news and weather. We live in a rural area and KXAN programming kept us up to date when threatening weather was approaching. We also miss the informative daytime shows. I feel kind of lost. Radio is no substitute and money is too tight for a satellite dish. We get 30 minutes of news at midnight on weekdays. Couldn't we at least have local and national news at 5 or 6 pm and severe weather alerts.

Dale -

Has TW dropped carriage of the local HD "sub" channels? I used to see them in the lineup, but now all I see are the main network stations. If TW isn't carrying them, I am not sure what the big deal is about this digital revolution for us cable customers.

You can't get KBVO on Time Warner if you don't have a HD set.

I don't believe hill country viewers lost their NBC - i think they boosted the power of their 36 power to reach those customers. KXAM has been gone for a while, and I have not seen any howling on other forums. Besides - the number of people without access to cable or satellite is really really small.

You can't pick up this station over the air.
Channel 14 transmitter is almost 60 miles outside town (near Llano. The low power signal (51) doesn't come in either.

Without a decent over the air signal, it will be hard to convince advertisers to spend much money.

Can we really pick this up over the air, especially east and north? Did they crank up the power on the tower?

KBVO is a full power signal IF you live near their tower in Llano County. Folks in Austin will have trouble picking it up and Bastrop County can forget about it.

But since KBVO's signal used to carry KXAN's NBC programming to people in the western Hill Country based out of Llano, I suspect a few people out that way just lost their NBC programming.

I understand the attraction to LIN -- it's a chance to add another must-carry station into the Austin market and a way to add a place for local sports -- but I think it would have been a nice nod to keep the KXAN simulcast on 14.2, even if not in HD.

Awesome! It's about time! I got so tired of missing Spurs home games due to some old school TV transmit 100 mile radius rule or something. Well done!
