Jeweler Korman files complaint over Letterman joke

UDPATE: The FCC has declined to comment.

Sarah Palin is not the only person outraged about David Letterman’s jabs at her family. After the CBS late-night talk show host made some off-color jokes about the former vice presidential candidate’s daughter Monday night, Austinite Russell Korman, owner of Russell Korman’s Fine Jewelry & Watches, decided to file a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission.

“I really think it was intent to hurt a public figure by going through their children,” said Korman, who saw the jokes on Tuesday when they were rerun on cable news shows. “We didn’t do that, much, to the Bush kids and we didn’t do it much to Chelsea Clinton or Amy Carter, and we certainly shouldn’t do it to Sasha and Malia Obama. And we shouldn’t do it to a governor or senator or, really, anyone’s underage kids.”

In his Monday night monologue, Letterman made a joke about a sexual relationship between Yankees player Alex Rodriguez and Palin’s daughter. (The Palin family attended a Yankees game Sunday.) An issue of contention is whether Letterman was referring to Palin’s 18-year-old daughter Bristol, a single mother who has become a public figure, or Palin’s 14-year-old daughter, Willow.

Letterman contends he was talking about Bristol, and that he would not have made a joke about a 14-year-old girl. But Korman notes that it was widely reported, before Monday’s broadcast, that it was Willow Palin who was attending the game with her parents. “For me to know that in Austin, Texas, before any of these jokes even came up, it was that well publicized,” Korman said. “Let’s remind everyone, CBS is based in New York, his show is in New York City, I believe, and the New York Yankees are in New York. So if I knew the news here, out of his huge staff — they knew what they were doing.”

Korman filed his complaint (Form 475B, regarding “Obscene, Profane and/or Indecent Material) on Thursday morning. He said he would like to see the FCC mete out the maximum possible fine to CBS and for the network to suspend Letterman’s show for a week. “I’m not someone that does a Don Imus thing and calls for firings and things like that,” he said.

Neither the FCC nor local CBS affiliate KEYE responded to repeated requests for comment.

I am so proud that my husband and I both have watches from a small business owner with ethics! I would have supported you had you criticized anyone saying the same thing about an Obama child. Wrong is wrong. Let's leave the politics out of this. And, accusing A-Rod of such an atrocity isn't in the best of taste either, regardless of his reputation. You were "right on" to speak out. I'll happily shop first in your store because of you ethics! Thank you for a breath of fresh air.

I don't care if it was the 18-year old that letterman was making fun of. It's still disgusting and wrong. Sorta like letterman.

Once again, the Palins are exploiting their children so they can get themselves some free air time. These are parents who will use any excuse to stick their faces in front of cameras. I doubt that Letterman is as devious as I am, but if *I* were Dave, I would just permanently ban my writers from ever again mentioning the Palins on my show. That would *really* hurt them where they live. As for Mr. Korman, I presume he did this to get some kind of favorable publicity for himself, so, I guess I will ban any mention of him or his store from *my* show, er, life.

Thank you Mr. Korman. I will do everything I can to send more people to your business. By exercising your rights as an American you did exactly what Letterboy did. Those that would try to hurt your business are engaging in a double standard. Over the years Letterboy has degenerated into what we see today. Time was when he was refreshingly humorous and not at the expense of children. Now, he has decayed to what we see today.

Does anyone really beleive that his editors and writers and handlers and producers ALL missed the fact that it was the 14 year old daughter travelling with Palin? Don't people even KNOW that the lawyers all read this stuff before it goes on the air? There is no way everyone missed that point. Letterboy just made an error and now the lawyers are telling him to cover it up.

Even if it had been the 18 year old daughter it would have been sick enough. How could all of that professional staff, who has NEVER missed anything like this before, miss it now when it is so critical.

How in the world is this news? Absolutely anyone can file an FCC complaint. I'm a local business owner, and I've done it several times myself (usually for hate speech on Fox News). Never thought to contact the Statesman for some free advertising. Will definitely let them know next time I go up and down the stairs.

That $10.3K engagement ring we pick out last week will not be on my hand in 6 months. We will not do business with someone with your type of character. Maybe you should apologize to your present and future customers, along to Letterman and Palin for sticking your nose into their business where it doesn't belong! Good luck with your position on this!

Mike - Letterman is definitely not a republican, which is why y'all, the unknowledgeable lefties are defending this scourge on society. Get your facts right. And to Joel: Chelsea was NEVER dragged through mud by republicans as you suggest. However, her behavior as an adult is not to be admired. In London, there are pics of her dead drunk with her boyfriend, with whom she lived, pulling her from a cab while she was vomiting. Nice, but the lefty media never mentioned that and the republicans did not throw that up in the faces of you hypocritical lefties.

I would like to file a complaint against Russell Korman for using free speech to file a complaint against David Letterman. Aside from what Mr. Letterman said, which oh by the way was a joke... regardless of taste or your opinion, Mr. Letterman and anyone in this country is protected by a thing call FREEDOM OF SPEECH!

There was nothing that the FCC will consider Obscene, Profane and/or Indecent Material." Shame on your Mr. Korman for getting in the middle of nothing! Attaching to yourself has made only one thing apparent: There is no such thing as bad publicity, only the people that make themselves look bad. And for that I'm thankful for our great country. Now who looks bad?

Remember for every finger you point at someone, there are four pointing back at you. Stay out of something you have nothing to do with buddy. Focus on your own business and I mean that literally... Something about glass houses sounds appropriate here...

To G: You say Korman is overreaching by speaking his mind, according to the American way and the rights we are given; he is doing something about that which he disapproves. It is YOU who are overreacting to his right to speak up. Korman has a fine jewelry store, and if you chose not to buy from him, that is your loss, not his. Go to the 10 cent store for your jewelry. I do not think Korman will miss the likes of you. That is what is wrong with so many of you - you defend the wrong people and let your lefty friends walk all over you. Do any of you have a mind of your own; do you really think it is wrong to actively protest what someone who is out of line does because he belongs to the same pol party as you? That is truly being ignorant.

Thanks Russell Korman, for standing up for what you believe. It is not right to speak about ANY women in this manner! Our culture has deteriorated if you think hateful/vulgar comments about young girls and women is funny.

All of the people saying "I'll never step foot in that store again", you probably never have stepped foot in that store and are just spewing empty threats.

It is truly sad that all you idiot fools that are condemning the jeweler who is simply exercising his rights, which are certainly diminishing because people like you accept the idea that only lefties can express or have opinions and rights, and at the same time overlook the fact, yes the fact, that letterman insulted not only the Palins, but all women of all ages, with his stupid attempt at humor. He also threw crap on flight attendents referring to them as ****, and women of all ages. You guys seem to think that as long as he did not intend to throw blobs of feces at kids of 14, insulting over that age is ok. Furthermore, this lecher fathered a child out of wedlock and would not marry the mother until the kid was 5. What does that say about him and his respect for women, mothers, daughters, sisters? Who is he to make fun of a girl who had a childout of wedlock. He is no better than Levi Johnston. It is said he hated his own mother and thus hates women. Well, I hate him.

I find this attack distasteful. Letterman desperate for ratings after being killed by Leno, and now by Conan. Yes, he's been turned off by millions long before this so folks are voting with their remotes.

b/t/w, Not everything goes just because someone's a politician or celebrity and their family are involved. You know, Jeff Ward is sometimes wrong, and he's certainly wrong here. And yes, he's talked about his boys many times on the air. For votes or ratings, does it matter? Does this mean they're open to Letterman style ridicule?

Just for the record, Russell Korman does the best watch repair in town. My TAG is still running like new after I thought it was going to have to be ditched. Now I have yet another reason to visit his great shop.

1st off, Letterman never said RAPE. He said she was knocked up by A-Rod....So 14, 25, or 60 years old....he never said rape. And Korman's jewelry is WAY to expensive, especially in this time so that's why he's putting his name in the news. He should concentrate on making better jewelry for WAY BETTER prices. All you people who hate letterman and say you haven't watched for years...How would you know he's such as **S anyway? Leno made bad remarks, Conan does as well, they ALL do. Don't watch if you can't handle the heat. Or how about we all don't make jokes EVER and all live in a straight line, no laughter, rule filled life. Thank you Mr. Korman for filing a complaint. While it may not be a big deal to some, it's a huge problem that I see in our country. Where has common decency gone?? I am trying to raise my son to be respectful of others, and to be a gentleman. I am trying to raise my daughter to be a lady and have self worth. It is very difficult to do in a society that thinks its ok to curse on network television and sometimes radio, and disrespect others regularly. I'm speaking of even the simplest form of a curse word, not just the f-bomb. When did this begin??? Where do we draw the proverbial line in the sand and STOP this??? So again, Thank you Mr. Korman for stepping up to plate and taking one for the team! And, by the way, when my 10 year anniversary comes up, there is a particular piece of jewelry that my husband and I will be shopping for, I intend to go to Kormans first!

give me a break. without a doubt Mr. Korman contacted the AAS about his filing. Striking while the iron is hot in a downturn economy to get some exposure for his store. As a businessman, Mr. Korman should know, if you don;t like Letterman don't watch him. Sponsors will not buy commercial time during his show and his low ratings and lack of revenue genration will make him get replaced. In reality this is just a win-win for Letterman and Korman, they both get unneeded advertising. OMG do republicans always have to whine about everything? They are the first ones to throw crap at people and then the first ones to cry about it when someone does it to them. Korman is an idiot seeking publicity. As for Palin, she needs to take her butt back to the trailer park she belongs in. What galls me the most is her attempt to convince America that she is this morally righteous person and she can't even keep her own daughter from getting knocked up. But that is the duality of being a Republican; you can talk all the crap you want AND you dont even have to walk the very line you paint for the rest of us.

So Mr. Letterman crossed the line from simply obnoxious to more-than-obnoxious? So what else is new?

If it bothers you then stop watching his show.

I have not watched Letterman in over 15 years and I do believe that my quality of life has not suffered one iota as a consequence. In fact I am probably better off for it.

The bottom line: if enough people do the same then his behavior will change, but if they don't then he will assume his behavior is within tacit community boundaries.

No amount of protests or blogs will alter that bottom line to any significant degree.

I can certainly understand all the animosity directed toward Palin and her family, especially on this sight. While our government has a 9.4% unemployment rate and rising, she wants to create more jobs with a gas line from Alaska to the United States; while our politicians listen to themselves and special interests, she wants to listen to the people; while our governments grows and creates 16 czars, she wants less government; while our country apologiges to other nations for our foolishness to protect the oppressed, she wants a greater defense; while taxes soar and the government takes from those who work to give to those who don't, she wants people to keep more of their money, and when she has the nerve to get pregnant and has a special needs child, she wants to keep it instead of doing the most obvious: aborting. Yes indeed, the change we can all believe in, and keep trashing this woman because she may be the only one who will actually follow our Founding Father and the Constitution. But who wants that, when we have what we now have, right?

Why is this even in the press? If a private citizen wishes to file a complaint with FCC, that's his right. If I filed a complaint, I dare say that it wouldn't make the news anywhere. So, what gives?

And for the record:

1) Sarah Palin has used her kids as stage props for her own political purposes. It's disgusting. If you don't think so, check out Bristol's spread in People magazine. Did Mooma tell her to preach abstinence works--even with the evidence sitting on your hip?

2) Sarah and Todd were the first to use the word "rape". Not necessary. Totally not necessary. If they were so concerned, they could have shut up. I feel for their kids.

3) When do we hear the very last of Sarah Palin? And before the accusations fly, before her nomination, I was a Republican.

My question is, why is it the Republicans immediately assume that the joke was about the 14 year old rather than the teenage-mother 18 year old? Have they got some weird hang up about having sex with 14 year olds that leads them to this conclusion?

The answer to my rhetorical question is NO. They jump to this conclusion because this was a bad joke that they want to turn into a national event. Who's taking advantage of the 14 year old now?

I do find it unfortunate that no one on Letterman's staff verified which of Palin's daughters it was, as Willow should be out of bounds. Why Willow and not Bristol, aside from the startlingly obvious fact that Bristol is legally an adult? Both Sarah and Bristol Palin have chosen to make Bristol a public figure. If Bristol's pregnancy hadn't been announced, it was likely to have been discovered, but once "outed" Bristol has chosen to keep doing interviews and making herself visible. You don't get to use your status as a public figure to push your beliefs and then claim to be off-limits.

The right likes to separate out others so that they can be in control and exercise power; they like the "high" they get from it. Personally, I like the "high" of imagining all the world living in Peace.

I find it funny how people in this city will defend Letterman's right to say something but we deny the same right to someone else. Under our legal system Mr. Korman has the right to express his feelings and the right to file his complaint. Is it correct to deny that person the right to file his complaint if he thinks he needs to? Once again the people of Austin have shown their inability to respect another person's rights unless those rights fit into their political beliefs. In the end the people of Austin what others to think that they are a very liberal city and yes when it comes down to voting and politics they are. But also when it comes down to it the people of Austin are very narrowed minded and unless it fits their views they refuse to understand and respect the rights of others who live in their community.

The reason we know the Letterman joke was referencing Bristol Palin should be obvious even to the haters but I'll spell it out anyway.

Bristol was the one who was "knocked up."

She is an adult, has a very high public profile and deserves the ridicule coming to her after being for safe sex practices before she was against it.

Those, like Nutter Korman, did the same think during the 2008 election when they insisted that the "lipstick on a pig" reference was a Palin personal insult rather than the cliched simile illuminating a thin attempt at political spin. Even McCain eventually caved in to reality.

I too will shop elsewhere, Russ.

This guy has every right to issue a complaint. Letterman is a jerk, he's low class. He was gleefully saying some pretty lowbrow, mean stuff about a little kid. He's been on board the "bash Palin" train since day 1, he is one of the enlightened folks who drew a bead on her and decided they knew enough about her within seconds of first hearing about her. She's a strong, accomplished woman who defies the role she is meant to play, and for that she is punished by society. Good on Palin for keeping going and shame on Letterman for acting like a high school bully. This Austin businessman has every right to file this complaint, and if it were Obama's kids being crudely lambasted on national primetime TV then we would have millions of liberals up in arms about it right now, calling for blood and having people to be fired...such as with Imus.

I'm 45 years old. In the mid 1980s, I stopped watching David Letterman. I could see - even then - that this man was mean-spirited and lit into nearly every child guest with sexual innuendo. C'mon, Letterman was a C student at Ball State way back when. It was a party school and he was the life of the party. His is struggling to remain the life of the party and not too successfully. He has to try to beat out Conan after losing to Leno. He is likely not to be successful outdoing NBC and therefore has to step over the line in feeble attempts that lean more toward "shock jock" than late night TV host. Korman is free to spend his time and money to make his feelings known. Of course you idiots who swear you are taking your business elsewhere have that right also (at least Obama hasn't take over that right from you yet). Involving the FCC is not overreaching at all (it is one of the assigned roles by law and has been invoked by the left more often than reported.)

By OlafOlson2

June 13, 2009 7:13 AM | Link to this

I support Mr. Korman's right to file a complaint, however I think Dave will survive ... the only downer is this gives more ammunition to the right-wingers who truly believe they are always under attack from somebody. Their cries of victimization grew steadily more shrill, even during eight years of Bush, and are now really climaxing under Dem rule.

I would make the argument that Palin missed a major opportunity here: By making such a holy Roman Big Deal out of this, she's energizing her "base" (who loved her anyway) again at the cost of reinforcing her image as a political opportunist to just about everyone else. If she accepted his explanation, or even declined to paint Letterman as a child molester (as she has on numerous occasions), it would look a lot less like she was trying to score cheap political points.

Personally, I don't believe Letterman was referring to 14-year-old Willow, who is and should remain out of bounds, but to Palin's OTHER daughter, who was also underage at the time she conceived her child.

At some point, we might want to revisit that, which was surprisingly un-hashed over during the election, perhaps out of deference to her daughter's age ... While we're all responsible for our own behavior, Bristol included, how clear does it have to be that abstinence-only education, such as the kind Sarah Palin promotes, just doesn't work?

As a mother, she failed her daughter. And if she hadn't done that, there would've been no bad-taste jokes done about her or her daughter on that topic on any late night talk show.

Overall, though, tempest in a teapot meant only to (further) stir up conservatives who think the world's coming to get them.

It reminds me of all the college kids back in the day that would drive hundreds of miles to purchase cases of Coor's until they discovered the politcs of Adolph Coors. Good for Russell Korman for taking a stand, and down with David Letterman and CBS for allowing such filth to be aired.

It is a sad day in America when comedians feel a need to lower themselves to such levels in the name of “entertainment” to make a buck. Just as sick as Letterman and his lewd mindset about teenage girls are the people in his audience that actually laughed at this “joke”.

Amazing: everyone who seems to think it's hunky-dory to make crass and vulgar sexual innuendo about a 14 year old because she's Sarah Palin's daughter. Just imagine if someone had made the same comment about Malia or Sasha; the Obama supporters would be (rightly so) crying foul. Free speech does NOT mean you have the right to say anything you wish without response or comment. Letterman made the (unfunny) joke, he should take the heat for the consequences. The other candidates that Mr. Korman spoke of did not use their children as political props like Ms. Palin did. Her husband called Houston doctors "fish pickers."

I feel sorry for her children, I truly do.

David Letterman is a tooth-gapped idiot. He needs to be censored and taken off the air. What a has-been. He's what's wrong with America. I hope Korman's filing brings CBS to its knees and they force that toupe wearing baldy who smokes stogies off the air. All of his top 10 can read...needs unemployment benefits! We need some Alex Jones on CBS...he's a real patriot! Palin for President. She's going to save us from North Korea! She understands America! Korman for VEEP! Yeah I said it!

LOL at Chelsea Clinton or the Bush Twins not being the brunt of jokes.

Also, Poor A-Rod. First, he admits doing steroids and after about two days no one cared. Then, a tell-all book came out about him and no one bought it. Now, Letterman is telling jokes about him knocking up a 14/18-year old girl and people are only caring about the girl! It's like people are going "Well, it's alright to joke about the 35-year old ballplayer knocking up a 14-year old. Did you see his OPS+ last year with runners in scoring position? Pathetic."

In conclusion, conservatives are butt-hurt about Letterman. Liberals are butt-hurt about Palin. And the wheel goes round and round with the spokes hitting them square in the tush.

So its ok to target / make sexually charged jokes about someone's 18 year old daughter?

Fine, lets talk about your mother when she was 18 and Letterman was "dating" her - maybe you are his OTHER "out of wedlock" child.

Letterman is a pig - and all you libs who are whining about boycotting Kormans business can take your welfare checks and go buy your jewlery in a crackerjack box.

We had to listen to you morons for 8 years while you trashed Bush, trashed our military, backed jihadists and now you are destroying this country with this crypto-muslim-commie in DC and your media ***** allies like Letterman.

Dang, I used to like visiting Austin. Now that I know it's full of crazed liberals, I don’t want to ever have to go back.
Funny watching all the idiots claim they will never shop there again. 20 bucks says not a single one of you have ever or would have ever been in his store anyway.
Also interesting is when liberals tactics are used against them, the flame throwers come out. You’re complaining about a single instance of someone using your own treachery. Damn hypocrites, the lot of you. You are pitifully stupid and can’t even see it.

Typical liberals' response -- if you don't bow and grovel to their views, and if you dare to have a differing opinion and even take action based on your beliefs, they always resort to tactics of demonization and threats, all the while protraying themselves as just the finest thing since sliced bread was invented. Pardon the pause, but I have an urge to to throw up.

I don't believe for a New York minute that the libs who are theatening to take their business elsewhere ever even considered patronizing Mr. Korman's business in the first place. They are unable to come up with any better response to counter his position, so they try to bully with empty threats.

Thus, teir argument amounts to no more than a firm stamp of their feet as they wail, whine, and otherwise employ temper tantrum tactics and chest-thumping threats to get their way.

I support Russell Korman's exercise of his Constitutional right to have an opinion and express that opinion as an American citizen.

And I also support the action he is taking, and hope he wins big time.

In fact, I intend to travel to Austin and buy something at his jewelry store later this year.

Lastly, to show empathy for the hurt little feelings of all the liberal whiners out there, I'll also engage in an actual boycott. I will never again watch the Letterman sideshow, and I will not buy anything sold by any business that buys ads for Dufus Dave's sideshow for as those companies continue to give Dufus and his network their business.

I will also not watch any of the other shows broadcast on Dufus' network for so long as he continues to appear on that network, and I will not buy any products manufactured by his network's owner until that network dumps Dufus.

To reiterate -- my boycott will last so long as Dufus Dave continues to have a forum on his current network to broadcast his vicious slime directed at his personal hit list of folks who have done nothing to deserve his vile attacks.

There, does that dose of empathy make all you libs feel a lot better?

Hope Palin wins in 2012! That would for sure drive those libs over the edge, at least those who aren't over the edge already.

Which is no doubt why Dufus Dave and all his lib supporters are so rabid in their attacks upon Palin and her family. They fear what's to come, and they cling to what they do best, which is to try by every foul means possible to personally destroy anyone who holds views that are different than their own. There's a word for that condition -- ask Obama, since he used that word to describe folks in all those small towns that he claimed were distrustful of "outsiders" and fearfully clinging to their bibles and guns out of what Obama claimed to be their ignorance of their best interests.

Those poor backward folks, who Obama viewed as too ignorant to know what's good for them, and distrustful of folks different from themselves!

Obama applied his derogatory, condescending term to the wrong group of folks. The word Obama used, however, fits perfectly as an apt description of Dufus Dave and his fellow Palin-haters. Hate-filled ignorant clingers to their Dufus dogma trivializing all who differ.

Whether Letterman meant Willow or Bristol is beside the point. The National Organization of Women (apparently on the same page as Russell Korman) said as follows:
"Comedians in search of a laugh should really know better than to snicker about men having sex with teenage girls (or young women) less than half their age.
The sexualization of girls and women in the media is reaching new lows these days -- it is exploitative and has a negative effect on how all women and girls are perceived and how they view themselves. Letterman also joked about what he called Palin's "**** flight attendant look" -- yet another example of how the media love to focus on a woman politician's appearance, especially as it relates to her sexual appeal to men. Someone of Letterman's stature, who appears on what used to be known as "the Tiffany Network" (CBS), should be above wallowing in the juvenile, sexist mud that other comedians and broadcasters seem to prefer."

I'm a political independent who leans Left on many issues. Not only is Letterman's statutory rape fantasy offensive to the Palin family, it's also offensive to Alex Rodriguez. The whole "joke" plays into the worst parts of racism and misogyny.

Plus the notion that the children of politicians are fair game for statutory rape fantasies or essentially calling them prostitutes. Is this where we're going?

I don't see how any liberal-thinking person who is committed to women's and civil rights can justify Letterman's "joke". That a number of you actually do defend Letterman signifies a serious derangement out there and a large number of people who need serious mental health counseling.

Where exactly was that free speech protection for Don Imus, whose only crime was also a stupid, tasteless joke? Or Carrie Prejean, who had the unmitigated GALL to actually verbalize an opinion, even doing so in a way that didn't trample on anyone else's opinion? Palin always complains about the media. What does she do? Complains to the media about a joke on late night television. It is common sense that the joke was about her older daughter. When Dave says knocked up? Let me think....what daughter of Palin's has been knocked up? I don't know the one that has been doing interviews? Could that be the one?
If you go out and preach abstinence only programs to the public. Be prepared to make sure your teach your children that first. Her daughter being knocked up by her high school boyfriend would not have been so newsworthy or shocking if she were not such an abstinence preaching conservative.
It is comical really. The teen birth rate has gone up the last 8 years. Conservatives keep teaching abstinence only. Just do not be surprised when you end up a grandma or grandpa when your kid is in high school....just like Palin.

Letterman never got over NBC dumping him. That and whatever else is bothering him shows. He has gotten bitter, mean spirited, and just not as funny. Children are off limits! Just because he claims he was talking about Bristol and everyone knows he wasn't, doesn't make it any better. It was cruel, mean, and not funny at all. Or the Bush twins, for that matter? Did Korman file complaints every day Rush Limbaugh called Chelsea Clinton "the family dog," or when John McCain claimed that Chelsea was so ugly because her father was Janet Reno? It doesn't matter who Letterman was joking about. The issue should be the vulgarity of his joke. Much of the entertainment industry has degenerated with its obscenity, sexual innuendoes, and vulgarity. All in the name of entertaining us. It's about time people refuse to accept that kind of language in the public. I don't watch Letterman or Eddie Murphy because of their foulness.

Your defense of David Letterman's offense to young women and all women in general, combined with criticism of Palin's call for an apology may have lost you a loyal listener.

You said that both sides are not willing to listen to the other side. You were right and it is totally obvious which side you are not willing to hear. I am just one of those uneducated unsophisticated hicks that just think what Rush Limbaugh tells me to think.

Don Imus pays the price for an impromptu statement that he regretted (maybe because he got into trouble over it), but David Letterman plans insulting personal attacks on young women and admits that he is no more sorry than he is when he tells a joke that bombs -- but that's an apology.

I thought you were more mature and enlightened than that.

While I agree there are bigger issues in the country there does seem to be a certain bias with the media when it comes to joling or bad mouthing about Republicans. Most ot the media is in the bag as far as Obama goes, so much for journalistic integrity. They would drop to their knees to get an interview with Obama and just lob soft ball questions to get in his good graces. It's pretty pathetic they they check their integrity and impartiality at the door over their own political agenda.

For those "conservatives" out there who have conveniently forgotten their recent history, The Palin's chose to make their family "fair game" when they used them as a props for Mrs. Palin's vice presidential run. This is especially true of Bristol who has (laughingly) become a strong proponent for "abstinence only" sex programs(another failed conservative cause). Unless David Letterman is omniscient, I don't think he knew (at the time the show was recorded) that Sarah Palin was going to attend that nights game with the younger daughter. The real fact is that Bristol may or may not be a public figure; and the real fact is Willow may or may not be a public figure. But it ain't your call, Jeff.

Everyone seems to be missing the point here: the real victim of Dave's callous joke is A-Rod! C'mon, he has the steroid and Madonna issues too; let's not libel him by suggesting he would knock up a Republican from Sarah Palin's crazy family! :~)

Korman is wrong about the fact it was "widely reported" that it was Willow, not the post-partum Bristol, at the ballgame. We only saw her in pictures, and she is a doppelganger for her sister, Bristol, and wears as much heavy makeup as her Mom -- Dave called it the "**** flight attendant look" -- so it would be easy to understand how people would confuse things. Let's never forget that it was the self-described Mama Bear that dragged all her cubs out of AK and on to national TV to promote her fanciful run for national office. Sarah's only reaping what she sowed. If she and Russell Korman wanna join hands and take about rapes and the like, keep it up and ensure Obama's popularity ratings continue to soar like Reagan's did!

Letterman's show is taped at 5:30 PM. The Yankees played at 7:05 PM. Are we really faulting Dave for not knowing that Willow, not Bristol, was planning to attend the game 95 minutes later. Seriously, this whole controversy is ridiculous. He's not going to target a 14 year old girl.

Yeah jokes about underage girls being impregnated by Steroid using monsters is sooooo funny. Good job Korman. They crossed the line. Put the line back where it used to be. This society is pornographic enough!

(on a related note I filed an FCC complaint against CHASE bank for calling my house for someone with a name "similar" to mine, repeatedly. You wanna write about it Statesman???)

By a little help

June 12, 2009 5:11 PM | Link to this

By the way, the joke was that Palin's daughter got herself knocked up by A-Rod. Another of Dave's jokes, this one much funnier, mentioned the guv's "**** flight attendant" look. Y'all know the guv's in the area today, right? Actually, you wouldn't know it by reading the Statesman, but she was in "central Texas" this morning when Matt Lauer interviewed her. She mentioned the "**** flight attendant" joke in the interview and took offense ONLY at the "flight attendant" remark. And Sarah was in charge when her oldest daughter got knocked up as a minor.

hey, ragin' redhead, there's something called history, and people often document it. Just 'cause you don't like it, doesn't mean it didn't happen and you can erase the evidence:

Just so you know:

"The fact that McCain had made the tasteless joke was reported in major newspapers, as was the vain attempt by his press secretary to initially deny what McCain had done. But in several major newspapers, the joke itself was kept a secret. When McCain subsequently apologized to President Clinton, the Washington Post, in its personality section, noted the apology but said the joke "was too vicious to print."

The Los Angeles Times, in its Life & Style section, provided an oblique rendering of the joke that did not fully convey its ugliness. When Maureen Dowd penned a column in the New York Times about the joke, she wrote that McCain "is so revered by the press that his disgusting jape was largely nudged under the rug." But Dowd chose not to relay the joke, either.

The joke did appear in McCain's hometown paper, the Arizona Republic, and the Associated Press did report the joke in full, so everyone in the press had access to McCain's words. But by censoring themselves, the Post, the Times and others helped McCain deflect flak and preserved his status as a Republican presidential contender.

Salon feels its readers deserve the unadulterated truth. Though no tape of McCain's quip has yet emerged, this is what he reportedly said:

'Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly?
Because her father is Janet Reno.' "

McCain's two-liner conveys some interesting insights into what he considers humorous (lesbianism, a young woman's physical appearance), particularly since it was delivered to a Republican crowd. Remember, this is the party that champions pro-family values.

Second incident:

Limbaugh's remarks "directed at two Sept. 11 widows veer so far off his worn propaganda path that they bypass his 'insensitive and inappropriate' statements concerning Donovan McNabb and venture into the realm of another shameful moment in broadcast history -- when he lit into 13-year-old Chelsea Clinton in 1993. 'Everyone knows the Clintons have a cat. Socks is the White House cat. But did you know there is a White House dog?' Limbaugh said on TV, before holding up a picture of Chelsea. "

First of all, Letterman is a republican and is only practicing free speech. Some how all the republicans are complaining because he made some off color comments, so now there complaining to the FCC. What happened to limited government and not interfering with peoples lives? Where are the true republicans? I think we still have free speech in this country, right? So to the the complainer's out there, are you really republicans, or are you just interfering in people lives. No wonder the republican party can't get it right.

Russ, Russ ... the election was months ago, your side got poured out everywhere, time to take a chill pill and go watch Robbie Kinevel. On the other hand, thanks for letting us know you prefer Conan and hate genuinely funny people. And thanks especially for letting all of us in this overwhelmingly Democratic town that you line up with the Palins, Limbaughs, and Gingriches of the world. Focus on your baubles and bangles, and maybe you won't have to lay off so many people.

Sheesh....it was misunderstood, in poor taste and he apologized, end of story.

Whoever said it was about free advertising was right. If you can take Letterman to court, watch out, because Oreilly and Scarborough, Limpbaugh and the rest of the "entertainers" are in as, or more so complicit and much of the violence and madness that keeps surfacing these last few months--the killing of guards, policemen and doctors. Be careful what you wish for--the chickens may come back home to roost nearby.

Korman is definately getting his 15 minutes of cheap fame, but at what expense. This story will now be attached to his baubles. Policing the airwaves is a big battle to take on.
