‘Veronica Mars’ is back … for now

“Veronica Mars,” the stylish teen noir series from former Austinite and Reagan High School teacher Rob Thomas, returns tonight at 7 on the CW for what is likely to be the show’s final four episodes.

The series has been on the bubble and brought back from near-death several times, but this really does look like curtains. A critical darling since its debut in 2004 on UPN, “Veronica Mars” has struggled to find an audience through most of its run — and especially since UPN and the WB merged to form the current CW.

In the meantime, star Kristin Bell has developed some serious acting chops, so do yourself a favor and check out the monthlong swan song. To help lure newcomers (and former fans who may have drifted away), the episodes will be self-contained mysteries instead of the usual serialized story lines.

The finale, titled “The Bitch Is Back,” airs May 22, and the CW’s press machine describes it thusly: “Veronica must confront her feelings for Logan.” Not much to go on …

For those who refuse to give up on “Veronica,” the perpetual fan campaign called Cloud Watchers continues its effort to save it.

These are the same people who hired a plane to fly a banner (“Renew Veronica Mars!!”) over the network headquarters in Los Angeles when programmers were pondering the show’s fate previously. Instead of the sky, this time the Cloud Watchers have been papering streets with flyers.

Thank you for mentioning Veronica Mars! I've loved this show from the beginning and everyone that I've introduced it to has fallen in love with it as well... I'm still clinging to the small hope of a fourth season, but my hope is dwindling.

I'm glad Veronica Mars is back. After seeing last night's episode, it reminded me how much I love the show. I'm hesitant to see the season (or series?) finale but after seeing Rob's interview on E!'s website, I'm sure all will be well.

What got me started even giving Veronica Mars a chance viewing was Kristen Bell's performance in "Gracie's Choice" with Anne Heche and Diane Ladd. If you're a fan of Veronica Mars, and you don't see "Gracie's Choice," you're cheating yourself. Any debate re Kristen's acting range I think was already pretty well outlined in this movie done in 2004. And Anne Heche was marvelous and totally convincing as the loser mom.

The Veronica Mars program is more than a little bit better than other dramas on tv today.

The CW is more interested in the money side rather than developing a program that has good potential. The old WB did well by Buffy the Vampire Slayer, so let this show get a few seasons under its belt and do some advertizing.

The CW might not be too smart to get rid of all their staple shows so fast. With several of their seasoned shows coming to a series end it might be a programmers worst nightmare to fill dead air with WWE wrestling and Ultimate Fighter shows. Although, that does seem to be the rage right now. Even Smallville in a few recent episodes has enlisted the help of some very popular WWE wrestlers to play roles. It's hard to believe that with all the talent out there we just can't seem to get beyond crud TV shows. Thank God for TV LAND!
