New CW keeps ‘Veronica Mars,’ et. al.

The new CW network looks a lot like the two networks it’s replacing. When the mini-net launches Sept. 5 (on KNVA Channel 54), the prime-time lineup will include mostly series from the defunct WB and UPN. Only two new shows will be added to the joint CBS-Warner Bros. venture.

The good news? “Veronica Mars,” from Austin’s own Rob Thomas, has been picked up, along with “Gilmore Girls,” “Smallville,” “Supernatural,” “Everybody Hates Chris,” “One Tree Hill,” “America’s Next Top Model,” “Girlfriends,” “All of Us” and “Smackdown.”

Previously axed but now resurrected is “7th Heaven.”

Gone for good are “Reba,” “Everwood,” “Blue Collar TV,” “Charmed,” “Living with Fran,” “Modern Men,” “The Bedford Diaries,” “Pepper Dennis,” “Related,” “Twins,” “Eve,” “Half & Half,” “Love Inc.,” “One on One,” “South Beach” and “What I Like About You.”

CW’s additions are “Runaway,” a drama created by Darren Star about a fugitive family starring Donnie Wahlberg as a man wrongly convicted of murder, and “The Game,” a sitcom spinoff of “Girlfriends” that focuses on a group of wives and girlfriends of pro football players.

I'm glad "Veronica Mars" made it onto the "keep" list, but I can't believe this: "Everwood" is gone but "7th Heaven" is raised from the dead! The TV gods certainly work in mysterious ways. I'd already made peace with losing "7th Heaven" but...I WANT MY "EVERWOOD"! (The only thing I can fathom is there must be "internal" reasons for it's cancellation, like the stars wanted out, or something. I can't believe the fan base was insufficient to sustain it.)

Well, I am just relieved that Veronica Mars will still be on. It is one of the most intelligently written and acted shows on TV. I think it has not gotten as much attention as it should have by the general public. I think it is suffering from the fact that most of the characters are high school students, and so people might judge it to be a 90210 clone. I highly recommend that anyone interested rent the first season on DVD, and then pick up the second season when it comes out. I am pumped up to see the third season next fall.

I am so disappointed that Everwood is not being
saved. Everwood was a great show that dealt with timely issues in a manner that was very responsible. To keep 7th Heaven, that lacks on so many levels, the acting skills of "Kevin" and the twins aaagh!! Why, why, why, 7th Heaven and not Everwood.

All I ask is that Amy Sherman-Palladrino and Daniel Palladrino come back to Gilmore Girls. There's no way the show can be the same without them.

What a gyp! Everwood is a really good wholesome television show and I am stunned that they kept One Tree Hill or even worse Beauty and the Geek. I really believed that 7th Heaven was going bye bye, but glad to see it coming around for at least 13 more episodes. However, I think they are going to use it as a temp fill to see how the new network shapes up, then its adios due to cost reasons or at minimum run a spin-off and get rid of the more expensive salaries. The best show, Smallville, is getting really good. If you're a Superman fan, then you really need to watch Seasons 1-5 on DVD and see what's been happening. Tom Welling should have been cast on Superman Returns. I have hopes for the network, but they need to rethink some of the shows. Of course, that's what they'll do in the Fall....watch the axe fall.

With such a small offering of programs, I don't see how this new CW is going to fly.

I may be in the minority, but two hours of wrestling on Friday night is a sign of barrel bottom scraping. "Pepper Dennis" is one they should have kept.
