New CW keeps ‘Veronica Mars,’ et. al.

The new CW network looks a lot like the two networks it’s replacing. When the mini-net launches Sept. 5 (on KNVA Channel 54), the prime-time lineup will include mostly series from the defunct WB and UPN. Only two new shows will be added to the joint CBS-Warner Bros. venture.

The good news? “Veronica Mars,” from Austin’s own Rob Thomas, has been picked up, along with “Gilmore Girls,” “Smallville,” “Supernatural,” “Everybody Hates Chris,” “One Tree Hill,” “America’s Next Top Model,” “Girlfriends,” “All of Us” and “Smackdown.”

Previously axed but now resurrected is “7th Heaven.”

Gone for good are “Reba,” “Everwood,” “Blue Collar TV,” “Charmed,” “Living with Fran,” “Modern Men,” “The Bedford Diaries,” “Pepper Dennis,” “Related,” “Twins,” “Eve,” “Half & Half,” “Love Inc.,” “One on One,” “South Beach” and “What I Like About You.”

CW’s additions are “Runaway,” a drama created by Darren Star about a fugitive family starring Donnie Wahlberg as a man wrongly convicted of murder, and “The Game,” a sitcom spinoff of “Girlfriends” that focuses on a group of wives and girlfriends of pro football players.

Fox axes ‘Bernie,’ adds five new fall series

“The O.C.” is coming back, but “Bernie Mac” is dead.

Nothing else is even a whiff of a surprise in today’s fall schedule announcement from Fox TV. Pamela Anderson’s “Stacked” and “Kitchen Confidential” are also gone, but does anyone care? We think not.

The network will add five new series — three dramas and two comedies. The fall prime-time schedule does not include Fox’s biggest hits, “24” and “American Idol,” because those shows won’t return until January. And “King of the Hill” won’t be back until January, either.

The new Fox dramas are:

“Vanished,” a mystery about the disappearance of the wife of a prominent politician and the search not only to find her, but also to find out who she really is. Joanne Kelly, John Allen Nelson, Gale Harold, Rebecca Gayheart and Ming-Na star.

“Standoff,” starring Ron Livingston and Rosemarie DeWitt as FBI negotiators with a romantic connection and a troublesome boss, played by Gina Torres.

“Justice,” yet another Jerry Bruckheimer show, this one about legal issues surrounding high-profile cases and the media. Victor Garber is the top legal dog in the fat-cat firm, with Kerr Smith, Eamonn Walker and Rebecca Mader also on board.

The comedies are ” ‘Til Death,” with Brad Garrett and Joely Fisher as a long-time married couple trying to keep romance alive; and “Happy Hour,” a buddy comedy starring John Sloan as a heartbroken guy and Lex Medlin as his new best pal … sounds familiar.

Fox’s fall schedule shapes up like this (new series in italics):

SUNDAY

6-7 p.m. NFL football overrun

7-7:30 p.m. “The Simpsons”

7:30-8 p.m. “American Dad”

8-8:30 p.m. “Family Guy”

8:30-9 p.m. “The War at Home”

MONDAY

7-8 p.m. “Prison Break”

8-9 p.m. “Vanished”

TUESDAY

7-8 p.m. “Standoff”

8-9 p.m. “House”

WEDNESDAY

7-8 p.m. “Bones”

8-9 p.m. “Justice”

THURSDAY

7-7:30 p.m. ” ‘Til Death”

7:30-8 p.m. “Happy Hour”

8-9 p.m. “The O.C.”

FRIDAY

7-8 p.m. “Nanny 911”

8-9 p.m. “Trading Spouses: Meet Your New Mommy”

SATURDAY

7-8 p.m. “Cops”

8-9 p.m. “America’s Most Wanted”
