‘Real World’ recap

OK, here’s my idea for a reality show: Take all the boyfriends and girlfriends back home of “Real World” cast members and put them in a house, so we get a chance to know the apparently crazy people behind all those disembodied voices.

Last night, Melinda she ditched her guy, all the better to enjoy the attentions of Danny. This used to take past cast members a lot longer than two episodes, so I applaud the advances in “Real World” efficiency.

I wasn’t quite sure how she justified crying on the phone like a wronged woman when she’d just been committing some serious cuddling with Danny, but who am I to question a free spirit like Melinda?

Likewise, I will not question why she and Johanna don’t own anything with sleeves. There was a shot of the kids out on the town where the house’s two alpha girls huddled together for warmth while sensibly clad Lacey walked in the background. We’ve started calling her Willow, after Alyson Hanigan’s “Buffy” character, who always wore a lot of clothes while Sarah Michelle Gellar and Charisma Carpenter trotted around in miniskirts. Personally, I’m hoping that Lacey will get fed up with them all one day and unleash some Willow-style witchcraft, flying around the house with her little pixie eyes dilated and black and shooting bolts of righteous fury out of her clenched fists.

I only saw the gang once when they were in town, and Lacey is the only one I have a clear memory of. Knowing what I do now, I wish I’d given her a hug and told her it would all be a lot easier in her 30s.

I still like Nehemiah, too, although he had less to do this week. That’s probably a merciful thing after Danny and Wes got mad at him because they got in a fight last week (I’m still trying to figure out that one).

But my favorite character on the show may be the “Austin” sign on the house. I love how they cut to it with music to fit the mood. Sad Austin! Brooding Austin! Hooking-up Austin!

While you’re mulling all things “Real World,” also check out the Austinist recap, comprehensive and very, very funny.
