What do you think? Is this a chupacabra?

Outdoors writer Mike Leggett received pictures of a strange creature found on a deer lease in Concho County. Do you think it could be the mythical chupacabra or “goat sucker” — or is it a raccoon with mange, as Leggett suspects.

How about them Cowboys?

The Dallas Cowboys lost to the Eagles Sunday, playing arguably their worst game of year. Tony Romo was a woeful 13-for-36 with zero touchdowns and three interceptions.

Is this a refrain of the past several years in which the Cowboys fade at the worst moment (the stretch run before the playoffs)? Or will they be all right?

What’s wrong with Tony Romo? Was it his hurt thumb? Jessica Simpson’s distracting appearance at Texas Stadium? Just a minor glitch in an otherwise-fantastic season?

What was your game-watching experience like?

Sports bars and restaurants across Central Texas were packed last night for the Cowboys-Packers games. Because the game wasn’t on Time Warner Cable, many fans had to seek out places that were carrying the game.

Some places were filled to capacity as early as 4:30 p.m. (for a 7:15 p.m. kickoff). Many fans had to drive around to several places until they found somewhere to watch the game (and traffic seemed to be unusually heavy). People who did get into places were packed in tightly. After the game, Cowboys and Packers fans were seen everywhere downtown.

What was your experience? Were you able to get a seat for the big game?

Where are you going to watch the Cowboys-Packers game?

Having trouble seeing the location details? View larger map

Looking for a place to watch THE game?

The Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers are playing one of the biggest games of the year at 7:15 Thursday in Dallas. Unfortunately for those in Central Texas who have Time Warner Cable, the game will not be on TV. The NFC matchup between the two 10-1 teams will be on the NFL Network, which Time Warner does not carry.

Check out this map to see places that will carry the game. You, the readers, have the power to help your fellow football fans. If you’re going to a restaurant or a sports bar, where are you going?

If your business is going to be playing the game, feel free to post details here, including the size of the TV the game will be on, what specials will be offered, etc. We’ll map your location for free!

Who are the best and worst dressed coaches in the NFL?

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell refuses to fully embrace perfectly reasonable requests from 49ers coach Mike Nolan and Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio to wear a coat and tie on the sidelines. Draft your own resolution honoring Vince Young

The Texas House of Representatives this morning honored Vince Young, the Houston product and former Longhorn quarterback who recently completed a rookie of the year season with the Tennessee Titans.

What would your resolution honoring Young say? (For tips, see the official resolution from the Texas House of Representatives below).

WHEREAS, Houston native Vince Young has been named the 2006 Associated Press NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year; and

WHEREAS, This prestigious award recognizes Vince Young as one of the most promising new players in the National Football League following his outstanding debut season as quarterback of the Tennessee Titans; and

WHEREAS, Refuting the conventional wisdom that it takes several years to develop into an effective pro quarterback, he became the Titans top signal caller in just the fourth game of his first season and quickly proved himself a top-rank player; this versatile athlete dazzled defenders with both his running and passing; he carried the ball for more than 500 yards on the year, becoming the first rookie quarterback to achieve that mark in the past 40 years, and took the ball into the end zone seven times; moreover, he racked up 2,199 passing yards and tallied another 12 touchdowns through the air; and

WHEREAS, Vince Young also demonstrated his superior abilities as a leader; the Titans were winless before he took over as the starting quarterback, but his competitive drive and stellar play turned Tennessee into a contender; the team posted an astounding record down the stretch, winning six of the final seven games and falling just short of a playoff berth; and

WHEREAS, The exceptional play of Vince Young is no surprise to Texans; in his three seasons at The University of Texas at Austin, he distinguished himself as one of the most talented collegiate players in the nation and led the Longhorns to the national championship with a victory in the Rose Bowl title game in January 2006; before enrolling at UT, he played for Houston’s James Madison High School, leading the Marlins to an impressive 14-1 season in his senior year and drawing scholarship offers from the top college football programs in the U.S.; and

WHEREAS, With his fine performance in his first professional season, Vince Young has burnished his reputation as a player of great skill and immense potential, and he is most deserving of special commendation; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Vince Young for being named the 2006 Associated Press NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and extend to him best wishes for continued professional success; and, be it further

RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Young as an expression of high regard from the Texas House of Representatives.

Should Mark McGwire have been elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame?

How Statesman columnists answer the question: Should Mark McGwire have been elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame?

Cedric Golden: McGwire should not be inducted. His unwillingness to speak honestly during the congressional baseball hearings regarding steroid use left a bad taste. If they could create a steroid wing in Cooperstown, I would induct McGwire, Palmeiro and Sosa. And Barry Bonds would be in both Halls.

Kirk Bohls: Absolutely not. For one thing, the slugger was a one-dimensional player, and until he comes clean with what he put in his body, I’d say that baseball shouldn’t put him in the Hall of Fame.

November 13, 2006

How would you fix the Longhorns defense?

Kirk Bohls writes:

‘Texas still has severe problems in pass defense, kick coverage and short-yardage offense.

If you think the secondary is bad now, just wait till 2007 when it will line up without Aaron Ross, Michael Griffin and Tarell Brown. Now that’s “Ugly Betty” scary.

The reasons for Texas’ 45-42 loss to Kansas State can really be traced to two factors: Texas lost its two biggest sparkplugs. It lost quarterback Colt McCoy to injury. It lost cornerback Aaron Ross to ineffectiveness. ‘

How would you fix the Longhorns defense?

Who do you think deserves to go head-to-head for a shot at the national title?

Kirk Bohls writes:

“Deep down, I really think Texas has an excellent chance of reaching the championship game and would deserve it. But I also believe louisville merits the exact same consideration at this point, because it is a perfect 8-0.”

UT sportsmanship

The University of Texas wants to stress good sportsmanship at Longhorns athletics events. To that end, UT administrators are urging fans to monitor their alcohol consumption; treat opposing teams, fans and spirit groups with respect; watch their language; tell ushers if they they see inappropriate behavior; and support their team enthusiastically. Do you think poor sportsmanship is an ongoing problem at UT sporting events? If so, will this campaign help? There oughta be a law ...

The Legislature is back in town for another special session, and it seems to be off to a slow start. We can’t help with school finance reform, but we do have a few suggestions for sports-related laws that need to be enacted. How about a No Child Left to Sign Law, which would mandate that Mack Brown may recruit no players before sixth grade (unless they’re really, really good). Check out our list and then give us your sports-related “there ought to be a law” suggestions here.

Will T.O. be good fit for Dallas?

In Kirk Bohls’ column Thursday, he made a list of all the reasons the Dallas Cowboys should sign Terrell Owens, and all the reasons they shouldn’t sign him.

The result? Only one strike against him: He’s a first-class jerk. But, he’s the best receiver in the NFL and Jerry Jones should sign him.

What’s your take? Post your comments here.
