The entry titled "What's your favorite bar in Austin?."
The XL Bar Guide was released this week, chronicling our writers’ favorite party bars, dive bars and more. Did your favorite bar make the list? What’s your pick for the best watering hole in Austin?
David, It is possible we ran into each other back then. I use to work at L&L off and on with my sisters Lesli and Megan and my friend Spring. Do you remember any of us? Remember the Stallion restaurant? Roky and The Bubble Puppy and Police and alot of other bands played at Armadillo and Vulcan. It will neve be as good as back then.
I’m in and out of a lot of bars but there’s only one that I consider to be “my bar” and that’s Casino El Camino. Where the drinks are stiff, the patrons aren’t annoying, the jukebox rocks, and the burgers are the best in town. Not to mention the bartenders actually have skills instead of big boobs like the rest of the ones downtown these days.
Orange Bull (drag & 24?), Lizard Lounge (on the drag), Dirty’s. The late 60’ and early 70’s were the BEST! Hey Delta, I remember the Vulcan Gas Company, The Armadillo World Headquarters, J&L Meat Company, The Back Door and The Poodle Dog Lounge also! I remember when some of these young acts came to the Armadillo (Michael Martin Murphy, Commander Cody, etc). Oh, how great Austin was back then and a hell of a lot smaller (‘69, 123k).
The Vulcan Gas Company, Mother Earth, The Armadillo World Headquarters, J&L Meat Company, The Back Door and The Poodle Dog Lounge. Oh wait, that was back in the 70’s and 80’s :)
My Favorite bar is R-Bar on 6th street because it plays awsome music the staff is awsome and freindly and the people that go there are always in the mood to have a good time…Congradulations on making the top 50 bars to party at!!
My favorite bar is Gino’s Italian Grill in the corner of a strip shopping center at Stasseny and South First. The food is o.k. and it is a true neighborhood bar with real neighborhood regulars. It is part of a dying breed and a good representation of the way most bars used to be, pre-Applebee’s.
There are SO many great bars in Austin. They should call the city Live Music & Bar Capitol of the World. All of the joints downtown and surrounding are cool, but sometimes you can’t beat the suburban restaurant bars … less crowding, less jerks and if you’re lucky you can walk home!
