Yoga for all Studio builds a mind-body connection for moms, grandpas, teens and tots
In Sanskrit, Kula means community — and that’s just what Dana Wills and Meg O’Connell strive to create in their intimate Tarrytown yoga studio. Their method is to “meet all students on their mats” by offering yoga classes that resonate with every age and every need. From prenatal practices to a unique hip-hop yoga class, the studio manifests the athletic and dance backgrounds of these two owners who fell for yoga long ago. Because both owners are mothers, Kula is especially family friendly, encouraging a yoga practice appropriate for couples, newborns, teens, toddlers, children and seniors. While parents practice in one studio, kids can be introduced to yoga in the other - call it baby-sitting with a purpose.
Glossy: Describe the Kula philosophy.
Dana Wills and Meg O’Connell: It’s all about enjoying yoga. Our teachers say things like “have fun, move, explore - this is not hairspray yoga.” Since teachers are encouraged to have a unique voice and specialty, each attracts a different sort of student. We cater to athletes, beginners, kids, experienced and the spiritual. We love to see those 2-year-olds toting their own yoga mats and teens doing yoga to an unexpected beat.
How did you both come to yoga?
O’Connell: My mother dragged me to my first yoga class at age 20. I slept through shavasana and didn’t understand why anyone would do yoga. I still thought it had to hurt to do any good. Two years later, I went back to help recuperate from a back injury and knew I had found something. Now, because it can take awhile to find the teacher right for you, I advise students to try, try and try again - everyone has a teacher, everyone has a style, and you just have to give yourself time for discovery.
Wills: When I took my first yoga class, it felt like coming home. In yoga, I found something to challenge my athleticism and balance triathlon training, but more importantly something deep and spiritual to call upon. The more I learn, the more I realize there is more to learn. I continue to seek teachers who emulate a yogic lifestyle, promote safe practices and tap into our natural rhythms.
