New Round Rock salon can extend your halo

The word “halo” might conjure up thoughts about angels, the video game series or the hit Beyonce song, to name a few.

Here’s one more for the list: Halo Hair Studio (1009 S. Mays St., Round Rock. 512-218-4256, www.haloroundrock.com), which recently opened.

The salon was started by Julie Pellizzaro and Misty Hill, who have been friends for 14 years. (The two have been educators for Sexy Hair Concepts, and are certified DreamCatchers by Paris Hilton hair extension artists.)

Halo offers haircuts, hair coloring, hair extensions, airbrush tanning and makeup applications. Women’s haircuts start at $50 and men’s at $35.

As a special, the salon is offering Xtreme eyelash extensions for $99 for a full set and Bronzed Envy Airbrush Tanning for $100 for four sessions.

File it up a notch

For Lisa McQueen and Wendy Pursch, nothing took the edge off the rigors of their MBA studies like their mani/pedi study breaks. Always in search of the perfect place, they tried various nail parlors and day spas, never quite finding one that met all their criteria.

embellish.JPG

As students of the business world, they couldn’t help but analyze how to improve the efficiency and the glam factor — and they dreamed of creating their own inspired pampering place.

Upon graduation, both took jobs in separate sectors of the corporate world. Nevertheless, they kept their femme nail fantasy on fire. And, when the time was right, in March 2008, they joined forces to open Embellish Nail Salon, a mani/pedi studio so indulgent in feminine excess it might be a grown-up version of Barbie’s playhouse.

With their first location at the Triangle thriving, the two pink-loving entrepreneurs opened their second Embellish on Bee Cave Road in February.

Glossy: What differentiates you from other nail salons?

Lisa McQueen and Wendy Pursch: Atmosphere is the key. We want guests to feel pampered as soon as they walk in the door. We offer complimentary sodas and white wine (and mimosas on the weekends) and an unlimited supply of M&M’s. All customers are given a warm neck wrap to enjoy during their services. We combine pink walls, chandeliers and big-screen televisions that continuously show chick flicks to create the ultimate fun, girly environment. Last but not least, we emphasize hygiene. We use non-whirlpool tubs because they are much easier to effectively sanitize. All of our metal implements go through a rigorous cleaning process after each customer, and we never reuse non-metal implements. Each customer is sent home with their own nail file and buffer.

What are your tips for keeping summer toes beautiful?

During flip-flop season, it’s important to keep toes polished and calluses in check — especially if you’re wearing sandals to the office. Pedicures should last about three weeks, but if you’re a runner, wear high heels constantly or spend time at the beach you might need to get your toes done more frequently. Between pedicures, we suggest using a pumice stone in the shower or tub to keep your calluses smooth. You don’t want to remove them altogether. We also suggest extending the life of your polish with a thin layer of top-coat. This helps protect the color from chipping, especially if you’re in the water a lot or exposing your polish to abrasive environments like sand at the beach or dirt in your garden.

Stylist Ava Hastey has a soft spot for Austin's artists and musicians

ava hastey.JPG

Back in the day, Ava Hastey used to wear her hair so big that she had to duck to get through a doorway. Just getting into her already vintage 1962 Fleetwood Cadillac in the 1980s meant a smashed coiffure. People used to say, “Here comes Ava -open up the garage door and let her in.”

Though it’s a bit more subdued now, Hastey’s hairstyle always has been a metaphor for her extroverted personality: She’s big-hearted, passionate about life, full of wise West Texas quips and glamorous. No wonder clients are drawn to spend languid hours in her salon getting beautiful the Ava Hastey way. A master colorist and award winning stylist, Hastey is a fervent supporter of the Austin arts scene.

Austin American-Statesman: You’ve been a part of the Austin beauty and arts scene for decades. The two worlds have intertwined for you. Can you tell us a bit about that?

Ava Hastey: I came to Austin in 1981. Though I worked in various salons, I found I really enjoyed being around artists and musicians. I began working backstage and on site doing hair for visiting performers such as Bonnie Raitt. This wove me into the creative fabric of the community, and artists and musicians became my clients. I think they liked that I didn’t kiss and tell — which I still don’t, unless I have their permission. Let’s just say I’ve done everyone’s hair from Stevie Ray Vaughan to George Strait. Sara Hickman is a current client, and I’m working on her new CD project.

Your salon, Amaz for Hair, is a soulful den where clients enjoy lingering all day. Some people come in for a chat even when their hair doesn’t need clipping or coloring. How do you achieve that?

We welcome everyone here with open arms. People say when they come in they feel like they are part of an extended family. Amaz is a real place and we all work from our hearts. I’ve had some clients for over 20 years and several for more than 30. Throughout the years I’ve gained so much wisdom and I enjoy passing that on to clients and friends — and learning from them, too. Though I have many clients from Austin’s artistic community, our base is very diverse: from federal judges to writers for the Texas Observer to old Texas royalty to new moms to students. We also work with lots of fashion photographers and fashion models.

giacomo.JPG

If you’re looking for a new ‘do, then consider spending time with celebrity hairstylist Giacomo Forbes.

After all, Forbes has styled the tresses of Sandra Bullock, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Sarah Jessica Parker, Claudia Schiffer and others.

And don’t forget to dish with him about his big TV moment. Forbes, who moved to Bella Salon & Day Spa (1221 W. Sixth St. 474-5999) after closing his studio last year, is a contestant on the third season of the reality hit “Shear Genius.” Set your DVR now.

The show, which was filmed last year, returns to Bravo this month. Forbes is one of 12 contestants who competes for $100,000 in seed money from Nexxus, an apprenticeship with the salon care company and an opportunity to style hair for a feature in Allure magazine.

Camila Alves, girlfriend of sometime-Austinite Matthew McConaughey, is the show’s host, and celebrity hairstylist Jonathan Antin (you might remember him from reality show “Blow Out”) serves as a judge.

Tame those brows!

100_0327.jpg

Hair can either make or break a woman. Too much here or too little there really makes the difference - and eyebrows are no exception.

My eyebrows grow in cycles due to my plucking schedule. I usually give them a good pluck each week, with the same hairs growing back every other week. So that meant I had to go about three weeks without plucking to give all the hairs a fair shot of being pulled out by the pros at The Waxing Studio. It was a horrible experience because, without plucking, I quickly began to resemble Madonna’s daughter, Lourdes.

Kristin Okuma was my aesthetician, and she had her work cut out for her. I told her I liked my eyebrows on the thicker side, but had sometimes gotten a little tweezer-happy, so it wasn’t going to be an easy task. My left eyebrow also gives me a hard time because the hairs don’t really grow in any workable direction. So, having all that information, Kristin dove in and explained everything she was doing along the way. She said my arch was in the right spot, but that was pretty much the only thing I had going for me.

100_0339.jpg

A pull of the wax here, a tweeze of a few stray hairs there, some trimming with the scissors and I was good to go. It was quick (less than 15 minutes to be precise), easy, and fairly painless. She even squashed the urban myth that my mom had told me when I was younger that you’re not supposed to pluck the hairs above your eyebrows because they would only grow back thicker. They were gonzo and the result was so much better than anything I had every done on my own.

Kristin listened to everything I had said and nailed it. My eyebrows have never looked so fabulous, and I don’t think I will ever tweeze again. She said that it was a work in progress with the pesky left eyebrow but, after letting it grow back in and a couple more trips to see her, she would have it in tip-top shape. The before and after pics are like night and day!

The Waxing Studio does every treatment imaginable for women and men. They have two locations: South Lamar and William Cannon. For more information go to www.thewaxingstudio.com.

Letting go of your locks

000_0063.jpg
000_0076.jpg

My hair is - make that was — more than halfway down my back.

I decided a long time ago that the next time I chopped my hair off that I would donate it … once I found the courage. I’ve been battling myself for the past year or so, telling myself I would cut it once I lost 15 pounds, or once I grew out all my layers, or whatever the reason. If you’re as attached to your hair — and I was to mine - you know it’s not an easy task. My hair was a total security blanket, and I thought it would be devastating to lose it, which is why I had kept putting it off.

Then one day, out of the blue, I got an email from Avant Studio Salon and Spa announcing a hair drive for Locks of Love. I thought it over for a few days and - finally - decided to make an appointment.

The day of the hair drive arrived and I was still as nervous as the day I signed up. My appointment was for 7 p.m., so I had the whole day to dwell and imagine what I would look like without my luscious locks. Seven rolled around and the scissors came out. Carianne was my stylist, and I came prepared with pictures of different hairstyles that I would be open to depending on just how short 10 inches (the minimum length required for donations) was. She divided my hair into two ponytails and started hacking away. Once the hair was gone, I was surprised that I felt very unattached, and told Carianne to have her way with my hair. Oh, did I mention the shampoo, cut, and style were free with the donation?

That day 40 people donated at least 10 inches of hair, which Avant packaged and mailed to Locks of Love. This is the second hair drive the salon has hosted, the first one taking place back in January of this year, giving away over 300 free haircuts. They plan to continue with at least two Locks of Love events per year, with the next one coming up in January. So, if you are thinking about donating your hair, you’ve got plenty of time grow it out a little longer and mentally prepare yourself. And make sure you meet the following guidelines:

  • Hair that is colored or permed is acceptable.

  • Hair cut years ago is usable if it has been stored in a ponytail or braid.

  • Hair that has been bleached is not usable. If unsure, ask your stylist.

  • Hair that is swept off of the floor is not usable.

  • Hair that is shaved off and not in a ponytail or braid is not usable.

  • Dreadlocks cannot be accepted.

  • Wigs, falls, hair extensions or synthetic hair cannot be accepted.

  • Layered hair is acceptable if the longest layer is 10 inches.

  • Layered hair may be divided into multiple ponytails.

  • Ten inches measured tip to tip is the minimum length needed for a hairpiece.

  • Gray hair will be accepted and sold to offset manufacturing costs.

  • Curly hair may be pulled straight to measure the minimum 10 inches.

Bronzing palette lets you go with the glow

M5X00070_9.JPG

Three years ago, local beauty entrepreneur Rochelle Rae’s Rae Cosmetics, 1206 W. 38th St., launched her line of all-natural, mineral-based cosmetics (that are also heat and perspiration resistant) to combat Austin’s hot, humid weather.

The newest member of her bounty of beauty enhancers is this summer’s must-have: the Bungalow Glow bronzing palette. Fully loaded, this compact boasts an arsenal of seven highlighting powders, including two shades of bronzer, four eye shadows and one cream illuminizer.

To get a sun-kissed, fresh-from-Barton-Springs glow without having to endure the sun’s harmful U.V. rays, try applying the bronzers where the sun would most naturally hit you — cheeks, forehead, nose, chest and shoulders.

While we’d never suggest your forgo a dip in the spring’s frigid waters, we do recommend using plenty of sunscreen, wearing a large hat and perfecting the art of bronzer application.

New places to treat him, her

M5X00019_9.JPG

If you’re looking to treat your sweetie — or yourself — here are two new options worth checking out:

Papillon, a skin care boutique, has opened at the ever-growing Triangle lifestyle center at the corner of Guadalupe Street and North Lamar Boulevard. Papillon (4700 W. Guadalupe St. 323-5233.) carries Bare Escentuals makeup as well as Chrislu jewelry and Lollia bath products. Starting in June, they’ll offer variety of spa services such as microdermabrasion, waxing and specialized facials.

Every now and again a hardworking man deserves a break, complete with leather sofas, beverages and a big-screen TV. Belvederes (920 Congress Ave. 478-4247, www.belvederesaustin.com), a day spa for men in downtown Austin, might be the answer. The spa provides a full range of services including haircuts, facials and shoe shines. Belvederes offers the head to-toe treatment - a free shoe shine with any paid haircut (expires May 30). Other services are massage, straight-razor shaves, manicures and pedicures. A selection of cigars is available in the spa’s humidor.

Step inside Bo Salon

boII002.jpg

Henry David Thoreau once said, “You cannot perceive beauty but with a serene mind.”

Thoreau’s sentiment is taken seriously at Bo Salon. Setting foot in the salon is to be submerged in an intense feeling of calm. The interior is a buttery gold, with light teal ceilings, resulting in a warm glow that fills the rooms with a sunny freshness and illuminates the faces of staff and clients alike. The art that the ever-beaming Ron King has selected comes from his personal collection, and blends with the Bo decor while communicating a serenity all its own.

King has several reasons to feel pride in his establishment, which has now been open for three years. He has made himself an important and compassionate part of the transformation on South Congress Avenue by renovating the buildings and grounds that house his business, while remaining sensitive to the needs of his less-fortunate neighbors. He has a deep personal investment in his staff and actively participates in the development of their careers. And, perhaps most significantly, he has earned his clients’ trust by consistently maintaining the highest standards when it comes to products, style and facility.

Most of us, especially those with an interest in health and beauty, know the refreshing feeling of stepping off a massage table, or the excitement of a new look, or a brief peace found while succumbing to the delights of a pedicure or facial. Where Bo Salon takes these experiences to new heights is in the active removal of all ambient anxieties. King’s driving passion is to take care of his clients, and he communicates this passion in every facet of his business.

Cuts don't have to be costly

To get your hair cut at one of the trendy salons or spas around town can put a big dent in your bank account.

Prices start at $50 and go from there. But did you know you can have your cake — and a hip do?

Training salons are where stylists must pay their dues, cutting hair for a fraction of the price charged by the city’s big-name salons. JR Salon, little sister of Jackson Ruiz Salon and Spa, and New Talent, little sister of Bradz Salon and Spa are two of these training salons and they are both fabulous. I have personally done business with both, and would recommend them to everyone.

JR Salon is the one I currently go to, and it is such a fun experience every time I go. It is located at 48th and Burnet streets next to Blue Star Cafe and, from the moment I walk in the door, I feel like I’m being pampered. First I have to say I love the look of the salon: very chic and modern. A wash, cut, blow-dry, style and complimentary hand massage will run you about $40 — give or take $5 depending on the experience level of your stylist. And they are a “no-tip” salon — $40 flat and you’re out the door! You can even get your hair cut or colored for free if you volunteer as a model for their training classes.

JR is a full-service salon, offering make-up application and hair removal services. Everything they do is high quality, and for such a great price. It’s hard to believe the stylists are in training.

New Talent is located on 35th Street close to MoPac Boulevard in an adorable renovated house. This, too, is a full-service salon with cuts starting at just $30, which includes a wash, cut, blow-dry and style. I really liked the service I received at New Talent, and I loved their prices even more.

Both salons exclusively use the Aveda line of products — my favorite — and also do complimentary bang and neck trims. So the next time you need a haircut, don’t be afraid to try something new, and give these trainees a chance. I promise you — and your wallet — won’t regret it.

Indulge yourself, all month long

The kids are at school and you’ve got errands to run, so you throw your hair in the usual ponytail and hightail it out the door to check off things on your to-do list.

Well, add one more thing to that list this month: indulge. Or, really, “Momdulge” and treat yourself at Birds Barbershop.

IMG_6085.JPG

School’s in, so rock out and get some extra love in February. For $39, you can enjoy the Ladybird wash, cut and style. This includes an organic extreme moisture rinse from Mop and the one thing we all love, a momdulgent scalp massage. Who wouldn’t want one of those? And to top it off, you’ll get a Mop conditioning treatment to let nutrients soak into your hair. There’s also a half-off sale on Mop shampoos, conditioners and other products.

You don’t have to have kids to take advantage of this deal, but do keep in mind it’s only offered during school hours — 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“You never get anything for yourself — its all for your kids,” Michael Portman, owner of Birds Barbershop, said. “We figured we’d up the ante for moms because it’s not about multi-tasking, it’s about taking time for yourself.”

Even though, I’m not a mom I decided to spend my Friday afternoon student-dulging (taking a break from my busy week of school and work) and treated myself to the special. When I walked in, I was pleasantly surprised by the inviting atmosphere. Portman was spinning records in the 1980s, retro-themed interior at the front and introduced me to my hair guru and stylist, Sarah Statham.

She washed my hair with lemongrass-infused Mop shampoo and worked her magic, giving me a scalp massage. I was then whisked away to sit under the heat so that nutrients could soak into my ever-so-thin hair. She gave me many tips on what to do to add volume to fine hair as she snipped away. I came out feeling like a rock star with my new ‘do, ready to hit the town this weekend. I’m definitely going to indulge at Birds Barbershop more often.

It’s no wonder Birds Barbershop was voted the city’s Best Beauty Salon in 2007. They offer such versatility “from punk-rocker to mother-in-law,” as Portman puts it. So moms, take a break, stop multi-tasking and go Momdulge before it’s over.
